Plains

The fifth biome of Valheim, a wide, sunlit grassland ruled by Fuling tribes and their dead king Yagluth. Source of black metal, barley, flax and tar, home to lox, deathsquitos and Hildir's Sealed Towers.

The Plains are the fifth of Valheim's nine biomes: a wide, open grassland of rolling hills, sparse birches and yellow grass. The landscape looks tranquil, but it is one of the most dangerous stretches of the game, patrolled by Plains Creatures such as deathsquitos, lox and the goblin-like Fulings, whose villages dot the hills. Its boss is Yagluth, and its unique resources (black metal, barley, flax and tar) unlock the fourth tier of metal weapons, the padded armor set, high-tier foods and darkwood building pieces (Valheim Wiki: Plains).

Players normally arrive after the Mountain, because the Artisan table needed to process Plains resources is unlocked by Moder's Dragon Tear, and leave for the Mistlands with the Wisp fountain that Yagluth's drop provides. Later updates gave the biome a night-time predator (the Vile, 2025) and surface dungeons (the Sealed Towers, 2023), and the Valheim 1.0 Release added a light armor set made from lox pelts.

Quick facts

Tier Fifth biome, normally entered after the Mountain
Boss Yagluth, 10,000 health, summoned with five Fuling totems on his altar
Creatures Deathsquitos, Fulings with their shamans and berserkers, Lox, Growths and the Vile
Resources Black metal, barley, flax, tar, needles, cloudberries and fine wood
Unlocks Black metal weapons and shields, the padded armor set, linen thread, baking and darkwood building pieces
Stations The Blast furnace, Windmill, Spinning wheel and Stone oven, all built from the Artisan table
What to bring A bow and Anti-sting mead for deathsquitos, healing meads, and Barley wine before facing Yagluth
Next biome The Mistlands, opened by the Wisp fountain that Yagluth's Torn spirits build

Landscape and points of interest

Every tree in the Plains gives Fine wood, and the enormous destructible stone monoliths yield large amounts of stone quickly. Cloudberry bushes grow everywhere and can be eaten straight from the ground (13 health, 40 stamina). The wind is strong in the biome, which makes windmills unusually productive there (Valheim Wiki: Windmill).

Six variants of "Stonehenge" boulder formations are scattered through the biome. Some hold a Vegvisir runestone that marks the nearest Yagluth altar; some hold a chest that rarely contains a Fuling totem; most are guarded by Fulings or berserkers. Both the formations and the runestones are uncommon, so locating the altar can mean exploring several Plains regions (Valheim Wiki: Stonehenge). Plains chests, found in every Fuling structure, roll barley, black metal scrap, coins, needles and, at 2.8%, the Sharpening stone that unlocks the Grinding wheel, the last Forge upgrade.

Fuling villages, outposts and ruins

The main objective of the biome is clearing Fuling villages: clusters of hide-and-bone huts, often marked by bonfires visible from far away at night. They hold the three key resources of the Plains: patches of cultivated barley and flax, Plains chests and, with a 50% chance beside each bonfire, a Fuling totem on an altar (Valheim Wiki: Fuling Village).

Villages range from a couple of fenced fields to something close to a town. Fulings ("Goblin" in the game files) carry clubs, spears, swords or torches, have 175 health and hit for 85; they hear exceptionally well, so chopping trees nearby draws them out. Fuling shamans (100 HP) throw fireballs and cast a barrier that absorbs 100 damage on every ally within 6 meters, which is why they are killed first. Fuling berserkers (800 HP) swing a club for 130 blunt damage and are the only regular enemy with a 10% chance to drop a Fuling totem (Valheim Wiki: Fuling Berserker).

The standard approach is to pull one Fuling at a time with a bow from cover and fight it out of sight of the village, leaving berserkers until last; frost arrows slow Fulings and one-shot unaware ones from sneak, and poison makes them flee. Fuling Outposts are isolated stone towers (the ruined variant always has a totem at ground level), and Fuling Ruins are small stone shells with a chest at the top of a staircase (Valheim Wiki: Fuling Outpost).

Creatures

Deathsquitos are the biome's signature threat: giant mosquitoes with only 10 health but a 90-pierce sting that kills a Mountain-geared character in two hits. One arrow drops them, the Anti-sting mead makes them harmless, and they also spawn on beaches and chase ships far out to sea, which is why sailing close to a Plains coast is risky (Valheim Wiki: Deathsquito).

Lox are enormous shaggy lizard-ox hybrids grazing in herds of two or three. With 1,000 health, a 130-slash bite and a structure-breaking stomp they are best fought one at a time, but they drop Lox meat and Lox pelts and can be tamed. Growths, black tar blobs living in tar pits, lob poisoning, slowing tar and drop Tar; being undead they fight the other Plains creatures. The Vile, added in the Call to Arms Update, is an undead bear (1,200 HP) that spawns only at night, avoids fire and drops the Vile ribcage used for Vilebone armor (Valheim Wiki: Vile).

Creature Health Main attack Notable drops
Deathsquito 10 Sting, 90 pierce Needle
Fuling 175 Club / spear / sword, 85 Black metal scrap, coins
Fuling shaman 100 Fireball 20 blunt + 100 fire; shield Black metal scrap, bukeperries
Fuling berserker 800 Club 130 blunt + 100 chop 3–4 Black metal scrap, Fuling totem (10%)
Lox 1,000 Bite 130 slash; stomp 120 blunt 4–5 Lox meat, 2 Lox pelt
Growth 100 Tar volley 45 blunt + 50 poison Tar
Vile 1,200 Slam 150 blunt; claws 130 slash Bear hide, Bear meat, Vile ribcage

Zero-star values from the Valheim Wiki. Few weaknesses apply: lox are weak to fire and resist blunt, frost and slash; growths are weak to blunt and fire; Fulings and deathsquitos have none beyond spirit immunity. After Yagluth dies, Fulings also start spawning at night in the Meadows, Black Forest and Mountain.

Taming and riding lox

Lox are tamed by sneaking up and dropping cloudberries (barley and flax also work), then staying within about 64 meters while yellow hearts appear. Because herds return to the same spots, players often tame whole groups without a pen, after which the lox fight deathsquitos and Fulings on their behalf. Two fed lox within 8 meters breed, and a calf matures in 1 hour 40 minutes (Farming and Taming).

A tamed lox is ridden with the Lox saddle (10 Leather scraps, 20 Linen thread, 15 Black metal), added in the Hearth & Home Update. The lox steers with the camera, has 240 stamina, ignores the rider's carry weight, tramples creatures at a sprint and speeds up as the Riding skill rises (Valheim Wiki: Lox; see Carts, Mounts and Vehicles).

Black metal, barley and flax

Black metal scrap, barley and flax are processed by three Artisan-table stations: the Blast furnace smelts scrap into Black metal with coal, the Windmill grinds barley into Barley flour, and the Spinning wheel spins flax into Linen thread (Valheim Wiki: Black Metal; see Metals and Smelting). Barley and flax are found only in Fuling villages and grow only in the Plains, taking 4,000–5,000 seconds to mature and yielding two per plant; flax is the rarer of the two, so early finds are usually replanted in a walled field.

Black metal makes weapons and shields but no armor. The Plains-tier Padded set is forged from iron and linen (10 Iron and 15 Linen thread per piece at quality 1, 26 armor each, 5% slower on chest and legs), the Vilebone pieces are the medium alternative since Call to Arms, and the Lox cape (lox pelts and silver) gives frost resistance (Valheim Wiki: Padded Armor; see Armor and Capes and Weapons and Shields).

Item Damage / block Quality-1 recipe
Black metal sword 95 slash 2 Fine wood, 20 Black metal, 5 Linen thread
Black metal axe 100 slash 6 Fine wood, 20 Black metal, 5 Linen thread
Black metal atgeir 105 pierce 10 Fine wood, 30 Black metal, 5 Linen thread
Black metal knife 34 slash, 34 pierce 4 Fine wood, 10 Black metal, 5 Linen thread
Black metal shield 78 block, 50 parry 10 Fine wood, 8 Black metal, 5 Chain
Black metal tower shield 104 block 15 Fine wood, 10 Black metal, 7 Chain
Porcupine (mace) 50 blunt, 45 pierce 5 Fine wood, 20 Iron, 5 Needle, 10 Linen thread

Recipes from the Valheim Wiki item pages. Needles also make Needle arrows (62 pierce). Black metal stays in use in the Mistlands (pickaxe, bolts, ballista, Galdr table), and at the Forge of Potential the Black Metal Battle and Protection Idols are the Plains-tier upgrade idols (Game8).

Tar pits

Tar pits arrived with Hearth & Home in September 2021 and only generate in Plains that were unexplored on older worlds. Each is a pool of tar guarded by four or more Growths, ringed by bone piles that break into Bone fragments; anything dropped into the tar cannot be picked up until the pit is drained (Valheim Wiki: Tar Pit).

After clearing the growths, players dig a trench to lower ground (or raise the earth beneath the tar) so it drains and the nodes become reachable: small nodes give 4 Tar, large ones at the bottom 15, and a pit holds 69–108 Tar. Two growths respawn every hour even in a drained pit. Tar builds the darkwood beams, poles, arches and gates, shingle roofs, Black metal chest, Hot tub and Long heavy table, and goes into the Tar blob bomb (Furniture and Decoration).

Food

The Plains introduce baking: barley flour, cloudberries and lox meat become Bread dough and Unbaked lox pie at a level-4 Cauldron, and both must then be baked in the Stone oven, another Artisan-table structure; Blood pudding and Fish wraps come straight from the cauldron (Food and Cooking).

Food Health Stamina Duration Recipe
Cloudberries 13 40 15 min picked in the Plains
Cooked lox meat 50 16 20 min Lox meat on an Iron cooking station
Lox meat pie 75 24 30 min 2 Cloudberries, 2 Lox meat, 4 Barley flour, baked
Fish wraps 70 23 25 min 2 Cooked fish, 4 Barley flour
Blood pudding 25 75 30 min 2 Thistle, 2 Bloodbag, 4 Barley flour
Bread 23 70 25 min 10 Barley flour → 2 Bread dough, baked
Plains pie picnic (feast) 55 55 50 min 3 Bread, 2 Lox meat pie, 5 Cloudberries, 1 Grasslands herbalist harvest

Values from the Valheim Wiki food pages. The Plains pie picnic is one of the feasts of The Bog Witch Update; its Grasslands herbalist harvest is sold by The Bog Witch only after Yagluth has been defeated (Screen Rant; Valheim Wiki: Yagluth). Barley is also the base of Barley wine, the fire-resistance mead the boss fight all but requires (Mead and Potions).

Yagluth

Yagluth, the fifth boss, is summoned by placing five Fuling totems on his altar, a ring of stone fingers in the Plains. He is the skeletal upper body of an ancient Fuling king crowned with black metal swords, and he rises out of the ground slowly enough to take free hits before the fight starts. He has 10,000 health, resists fire, is very resistant to pierce and is immune to poison and stagger (Physgun boss checklist).

His three attacks are a volley of ten burning meteors after his left fist glows red (40 blunt, 120 fire), a blue-fisted ground slam that leaves burning ground (65 fire, 65 lightning), and a 40-meter fire beam from his mouth (40 fire, 20 lightning per projectile). His aura forces darkness and suppresses rain, so the Wet effect cannot be used as fire protection (Valheim Wiki: Yagluth). Standard preparation is upgraded padded armor, Barley wine, healing and Anti-sting meads, a blunt or slash weapon such as Frostner or the black metal sword, and Bonemass's power; players flatten the arena, shelter behind the pillars from meteors, sidestep the beam and strike after the slam.

Yagluth drops his trophy and three Torn spirits, which build the Wisp fountain that clears the Mistlands mist. Hanging the trophy at the Sacrificial Stones grants his Forsaken Power, which since the Call to Arms rebalance of August 2025 gives 50% lightning resistance, +25 Farming skill and 10% more damage for five minutes (Game Rant); before that it granted fire, frost and lightning resistance. Killing Moder enables the "The horde is attacking" Fuling raid on bases in the Meadows, Black Forest or Plains, and killing Yagluth switches it off in favor of the Mistlands events (Raids and Events).

Hildir and the Sealed Towers

Hildir, the clothes trader of the Hildir's Request Update, camps in the Meadows with her two lox, Blåbär and Hallon, but her map table marks three dungeons, one per world region, and the Plains one is the Sealed Tower. Three generate per world, 3,000 meters apart (Valheim Wiki: Hildir).

A Sealed Tower is an unbreakable black-stone keep whose real entrance is on the roof, so players climb with ladders or raised earth and fight down through four floors of Fulings, shamans, hidden traps and chests (Valheim Wiki: Sealed Tower).

The bottom floor holds the duo miniboss Zil & Thungr: Thungr, a 4,200-HP berserker, and Zil, a 2,400-HP shaman who shields him and throws fireballs, then fights like a normal shaman once Thungr dies. Zil drops Hildir's bronze chest, which is returned to her for new wares and unlocks a matching raid.

Changes at 1.0

The Plains received no new terrain in Valheim 1.0 (Sep 9, 2026), but their resources gained new uses. The Lox Fur set (Lox Fur Jacket, Trousers and Hood) is one of the four armor sets of the Deep North Update (1.0 Patch Notes): a light set made from Lox pelts and bone fragments rather than Deep North moulds, favoring sneaking and bows (BisectHosting). A Black Metal Stack build piece was added, black metal idols serve the Forge of Potential, and Yagluth reappears among the earlier bosses in the gauntlet before Kall Fimbulbringer.

Frequently asked questions

When should you go to the Plains? After the Mountain, because the Artisan table needed to process Plains resources is unlocked by Moder's Dragon Tear. Players leave for the Mistlands once Yagluth's drop provides the Wisp fountain.

How do you deal with deathsquitos? They have only 10 health, so a single arrow drops one, but their 90-pierce sting kills a Mountain-geared character in two hits. The Anti-sting mead makes them harmless for ten minutes. They also spawn on beaches and chase ships, which is why sailing close to a Plains coast is risky.

Where do you find barley and flax? Only in Fuling villages, and they grow only in the Plains. Both take 4,000 to 5,000 seconds to mature and yield two per plant; flax is the rarer, so early finds are usually replanted in a walled field.

How do you beat Yagluth? Place five Fuling totems on his altar, then fight the skeletal Fuling king's 10,000 health with upgraded padded armor, Barley wine, healing and Anti-sting meads, a blunt or slash weapon and Bonemass's power. Shelter behind the pillars from his meteors, sidestep the fire beam and strike after his ground slam.

How do you tame a lox? Sneak up and drop cloudberries, barley or flax, then stay within about 64 meters while yellow hearts appear. Tamed lox fight deathsquitos and Fulings on the player's behalf, and can be ridden with the Lox saddle.
