Fuling Villages

Fuling Villages are the fortified goblin camps of Valheim's Plains, with watchtowers, bonfires, huts and fields of barley and flax, guarded by Fulings, shamans and berserkers. Raiding them yields black metal scrap, Fuling totems for Yagluth and the only barley and flax seed.

Fuling Villages are the fortified camps of the goblin-like Fuling in the Plains biome of Valheim: clusters of bone-and-hide huts, wooden watchtowers, bonfires and fenced fields, defended by Fulings, Fuling shamans and hulking berserkers. Open-air rather than instanced, they are the heart of the Plains: the villages hold the black metal scrap that starts the fourth metal tier, the world's only wild barley and flax, and the Fuling totems needed to summon Yagluth. JP Valheim notes that they range from a couple of fenced fields to something close to a town.

How to find Fuling Villages

Fuling Villages generate across the Plains, the flat yellow-grassed biome that follows the Mountain. By day their watchtowers and hut roofs stand out on the open hills; at night their bonfires can be seen from far away. Fulings hear exceptionally well, so chopping trees or mining near a village often brings a party out to investigate; a player who backs off before being seen lets them wander home (Fuling, Valheim Wiki; Fuling Village, Valheim Wiki).

Layout of a village

A village is assembled at random from these pieces (Point of interest, Valheim Wiki):

  • Watchtowers and raised platforms, each manned by spear-throwing Fulings.
  • A bonfire, with a Fuling totem on an altar half the time, up to three Fulings and even chances of a berserker and a shaman; campfires have the same guards but no totem.
  • Fenced fields of twelve barley or eleven flax plants, each yielding two when picked.
  • A work area with a Plains chest and two tanning racks; huts and tents hold a chest up to three times in ten.
  • A refuse pit that can hold black metal scrap, bone fragments and dandelions.

Inhabitants

Enemy Health Attacks Drops
Fuling 175 Club, sword or spear 85; torch 45 plus 45 fire 1 black metal scrap, coins (25%), trophy 10%
Fuling Shaman 100 Fireball 100 fire; shield of 100 on allies within 6 m 1 black metal scrap, coins (25%), trophy 10%
Fuling Berserker 800 Club 130 blunt, triple ground slam 3-4 black metal scrap, coins, totem 10%, trophy 5%

Unstarred values from the Valheim Wiki; all three are immune only to spirit. See Plains Creatures.

JP Valheim's rundown: melee Fulings, spear throwers, shamans whose shields he reckons roughly triple their allies' health, and berserkers as big as trolls. Interlopers complicate things: Lox herds, deathsquitos and the Growths of nearby tar pits.

Old School Game Snob rates the spear throwers, especially starred ones, as the most dangerous, since their spears are hard to dodge; starred Fulings have double or triple the health.

How to raid a Fuling Village

JP Valheim first sets up a safe spot nearby, with a portal, a campfire for the Rested bonus and raised ground, then kills every deathsquito in the area. Iron armor and weapons are the wiki's minimum, and players who follow the usual order arrive with the Mountain's silver-tier gear (Armor and Capes).

The core tactic is to pull Fulings one or two at a time with a bow from cover and fight them out of sight of the village. The wiki advises shooting tower sentries and shamans first; a fully upgraded Draugr Fang with poison or needle arrows kills an unaware Fuling in one shot (Fuling Village, Valheim Wiki; Bows, Crossbows and Arrows).

Berserkers are left until last and pulled alone. JP Valheim kites them with frost arrows, whose slow lets a player back away and keep shooting. His simplest tool of all is the ooze bomb, thrown in the path of a charging group; poison also makes Fulings flee.

A shaman that has seen the player first raises its shield, then lobs fireballs; JP Valheim circles it, breaks the shield and strikes while it lifts its staff. The last stragglers often get stuck in huts or on platforms, where poison bombs finish them.

MalinaPlays' alternative is height: she raises an earth pillar with the hoe next to a camp, lures the Fulings over and fights from the top, where they cannot reach her.

Fuling Village loot

Barley and flax grow only in the Plains and are found wild only in these villages, so the first harvest is also the seed stock for a farm; black metal scrap comes from every Fuling killed and from chests; and the Sharpening Stone that builds the forge's grinding wheel turns up in Fuling camp chests. Each Plains chest rolls two or three of these (Loot chest, Valheim Wiki):

Chest item Amount Chance per roll
Black metal scrap 2-5 27%
Coins 10-40 27%
Needle 2-5 27%
Barley 2-4 13.5%
Sharpening Stone 1 2.7%
Wooden Atgeir 1 2.7%

Fuling totems, five of which summon Yagluth, sit on half the bonfire altars and drop from one berserker in ten, and restored Fuling Outposts always hold one; breaking an altar before taking its totem destroys it (Fuling Totem, Valheim Wiki). With a workbench nearby, a captured village's bonfire can be dismantled for its Surtling Core, and tanning racks and huts for hides, flint, bones and wood.

What Fuling Villages unlock

Black metal scrap smelts into black metal in the Blast Furnace, the metal of the Plains weapons, tools and chests; barley becomes flour and Barley Wine, and flax becomes linen thread for the padded armor (Metals and Smelting; Farming and Taming; Mead and Potions). Five totems open the fight with Yagluth, and the coins buy goods from Haldor.

History and Valheim 1.0

The camps predate early access: Iron Gate's beta news showed goblin camps in August 2020, presented Fuling villages and the berserker that September, remarking that it "would be terrible if someone were to… raid them", and added the shaman in October (Development news and new content, Iron Gate). In September 2021, just after the Hearth & Home Update, patch 0.202.19 slightly lowered Fuling and shaman health (Patch 0.202.19, Iron Gate), and the Hildir's Request Update of 2023 added the Sealed Tower, a Fuling fortress with its own mini-bosses (Hildir's Dungeons). Since the Valheim 1.0 Release, Game8 lists Plains tower and ruin chests and the Fulings' trash piles among the sources of Black Metal idols for the Forge of Potential (Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!, Iron Gate; Game8).

Frequently asked questions

Do Fuling Villages respawn? No. The guards are one-time spawns and chests and totems do not return, though roaming Fulings keep spawning across the Plains. Picked barley and flax can be replanted.

Where do you find Fuling totems? On the altars beside village bonfires, from Fuling berserkers (10 percent), in restored Fuling Outposts, and rarely in the chest at the center of a Plains stone circle.

What gear do you need to raid a Fuling Village? Iron armor and weapons at least, better the Mountain's silver tier, plus a bow with frost or poison arrows.

Can you turn a Fuling Village into a base? Yes. A cleared village can be claimed with a workbench, its fields replanted and its bonfire dismantled for a Surtling Core.
