Swamp

The third biome of Valheim, a rain-soaked bog of ancient trees, draugr and poison. Its Sunken Crypts hold the scrap iron that carries a Viking into the Mountains, its boss is Bonemass, and since 2024 the Bog Witch trades from a hut in its depths.

The Swamp is the third biome in Valheim's progression, after the Meadows and the Black Forest. It is a dark, permanently rainy bog of bare-branched ancient trees standing in knee-deep water, and the first biome most new players find genuinely hard: the ground is wet, the creatures poison, and the terrain makes escape difficult. Its rewards are scrap iron from the Sunken Crypts, the materials for the Swamp tier of gear and food, and the third boss, Bonemass, whose Wishbone unlocks the silver of the Mountain.

Finding a swamp

Swamps never generate at the center of the world. They appear in a ring around it, between roughly 2,000 and 6,000 meters from the spawn point in worlds created since the Mistlands update (Valheim Wiki), so most players must build a boat and cross water to reach one; see World Map, Generation and Seeds and Sailing and Ships. From the sea a swamp is recognizable by its tall dead trees and its own rain cloud: it rains in the mire whatever the weather elsewhere (Valheim Wiki).

Ships should not be moored in the swamp itself: leeches bite hulls and the shallow bottom grounds boats, so guides recommend docking on a neighboring Meadows or Black Forest shore and walking in.

Wet, cold and poison

The constant rain keeps the player permanently Wet. The Wet effect cuts health regeneration by 25 percent and stamina and eitr regeneration by 15 percent, adds weakness to frost and lightning, and lasts 120 seconds after leaving the water or rain (Valheim Wiki). A player cannot gain the Resting effect while wet, so the swamp is worked in short trips from a sheltered camp with the Rested, Comfort and Sleeping bonus active, and the hoe's level-ground tool turns water into walkable causeways. See Weather, Cold and Wet.

At night the Cold effect stacks on Wet, and the Wraith, the biome's only flyer, spawns only after dark; nearly every guide says to sleep through the night and enter by day.

Poison is the biome's signature damage type: Blobs, Oozers, Leeches and Bonemass all inflict it, and it keeps ticking long after the hit. Poison Resistance Mead, brewed from honey, thistle, a neck tail and coal, is considered mandatory; each dose lasts ten minutes and cuts poison damage by three quarters. See Mead and Potions.

Creatures

Before 1.0 the swamp held nine creatures including its boss, and almost all of them are undead or slime. Blunt weapons are the tool of choice: blobs, oozers and skeletons are weak to blunt, and draugr take normal damage from it while resisting fire. The individual creatures are covered on Swamp Creatures; the table below summarizes the wiki's figures (Valheim Wiki).

Creature Notes Weak to Key drop
Draugr (axe or bow), Draugr Elite Bloated undead Vikings; 100 HP at zero stars; spawn from Body Piles Nothing; resist fire Entrails, trophies
Blob, Oozer Bouncing slimes; Oozers burst into blobs and a poison cloud Blunt, frost, lightning Ooze
Leech Lives in the water; bites poison Anything, on land Bloodbag
Skeleton Also found in crypts and ruins Blunt Bone fragments
Surtling Fire elemental from Fire Geysers; dies on touching water Frost Surtling Core, coal
Wraith Night-only flyer Spirit, fire Chain
Abomination Tree-like giant disguised as a stump Fire Guck, Root
Writhan Added in 1.0; rare Slash Writhan Roots

Fire Geysers are indestructible Surtling spawners. Because Surtlings die the instant they touch water, players dig the ground around a geyser below the waterline so each Surtling dies as it appears, making a free source of Surtling Cores and coal; the flames also burn Abominations, which are weak to fire.

The Abomination, added in November 2021, hides as a glowing, ooze-dripping stump until a player walks close, then rises on four root legs. It drops Guck and Root, and Root is the material of the Root armor set, whose harness gives pierce resistance and whose mask gives poison resistance (Armor and Capes).

Wraiths hit hard, resist physical damage, and are the only swamp enemy that can reach a player on a fallen tree or crypt roof. They are also the only renewable source of Chains, the one reason to be in the swamp at night.

Sunken Crypts and iron

Sunken Crypts are the swamp's dungeon and the game's first source of iron. Each is a small stone building marked by two green-flamed torches, and they tend to generate in clusters of four. The iron gate at the entrance opens only with the Swamp Key, dropped by The Elder in the Black Forest, so the crypts also enforce the boss order (Valheim Wiki).

Inside, corridors are blocked by Muddy Scrap Piles, which any pickaxe, even the antler pickaxe, can mine. They yield Scrap Iron, Leather Scraps and Withered Bones, and ten Withered Bones are the offering that summons Bonemass. Draugr sometimes spawn inside the piles, and Body Piles, spawners that buzz with flies, keep producing draugr until destroyed.

Each crypt also holds two or three chests with coins, amber, chains, arrows and sometimes a stack of up to twenty Scrap Iron, and Withered Bones can lie loose on the floor. The crypt roof is one of the safest spots in the biome and a favorite portal site.

Scrap Iron is smelted into Iron in the Smelter and worked at the Forge (Metals and Smelting). Like every metal it cannot pass through Portals without a world modifier, so much of the swamp's labor is hauling ore home by boat. The iron tier includes the Iron Mace and Banded Shield, Iron armor, the Huntsman Bow and the Iron Sledge, which also needs a Draugr Elite trophy (Weapons and Shields). The Wishbone later reveals a few scrap piles buried in the mud, but crypts remain the practical source.

Other resources

Ancient Bark comes from the Ancient Trees, felled with a bronze or better axe; it is needed for the Bonfire, the Draugr Fang bow and the Longship. Guck hangs in green glowing sacks high on some trees and is mined with a pickaxe after climbing or building up to it, or taken from Abominations; it goes into the Draugr Fang bow and green lighting.

Yellow flowers in the swamp give Turnip Seeds, the first crop unlocked outside the Meadows, and Thistle glows blue at night for meads. Bloodbags from Leeches, Entrails from draugr and Ooze from blobs feed the cauldron and fermenter: Sausages, Turnip Stew, Black Soup and Muckshake are the swamp-tier foods (Food and Cooking, Farming and Taming). See Materials and Resources.

The Bog Witch

Since patch 0.219.13, released on Oct 29, 2024, the swamp has been home to The Bog Witch, a trader who sells potion ingredients, feast recipes and the Scythe handle from a small wooden hut (Steam news: Patch 0.219.13 – The Bog Witch; Screen Rant). The hut sits under a shimmering dome that keeps creatures out, with a Greydwarf on guard outside and an animated broom, the Kvastur, sweeping inside. She buys Amber, Amber Pearls, Rubies and silver necklaces for coins (Valheim Wiki).

Like Haldor and Hildir, she has up to ten candidate locations per world, all in swamps 3,000 to 8,000 meters from the center; the first one a player comes near becomes her permanent home, marked on the map with a cauldron icon. The update that added her is covered on The Bog Witch Update.

Bonemass

The swamp's boss altar is a giant glowing skull. Its position is revealed by Vegvisir runestones found in ruined towers and inside crypts, and Bonemass is summoned by offering ten Withered Bones there (Valheim Wiki).

Bonemass has 5,000 health and three attacks: a slow melee swipe, a thrown lump of itself that spawns up to four skeletons and blobs, and a poison cloud around its body (Physgun boss checklist). It is the only boss weak to blunt, taking half again as much damage from blunt and frost, while fire and pierce do a quarter damage and it is immune to poison. The standard kit is therefore an Iron Mace, a buckler or banded shield, poison resistance mead and the Root mask.

Players flatten the ground around the skull with a hoe, clear wandering Abominations and leeches first, and either fight in melee between its swipes or shoot from a platform built into one of the indestructible non-ancient trees, which take no damage and serve as a foundation.

Bonemass drops its trophy and one Wishbone per player. The trophy, hung at the Sacrificial Stones, grants its Forsaken Power (Forsaken Powers): five minutes of strong resistance to blunt, slash and pierce. The Wishbone pulses faster near buried treasure and silver veins in the Mountains. Killing Bonemass also unlocks the raid "A cold wind blows from the mountains", in which Drakes fly over base walls (Raids and Events).

Changes in 1.0

Valheim 1.0 (Valheim 1.0 Release), released on Sep 9, 2026, added one new creature to the swamp: the Writhan, a rare undead thing that bursts apart when brought down, leaving a crater. It has 400 health, is weak to slash and resists blunt and fire, and always drops one or two Writhan Roots (Valheim.tools; Game8). The roots craft the Shield of Roots (10 Fine Wood and 1 root), the Lox Fur Hood of the new light armor set, and the Birdnest (5 Thistle, 2 roots, 3 Acorns), a hanging piece that slowly produces feathers.

The Forge of Potential in the Mountains upgrades gear beyond quality four with idols found in chests, one pair per biome tier; the Iron Battle Idol and Iron Protection Idol push iron weapons and armor past their cap, at the risk of destroying the item on a failed attempt (Game8).

1.0 also lets the outer edges of a world generate alternate versions of the earlier biomes, and they appear only in areas not yet explored (1.0 patch notes via Beebom). Iron Gate's own examples are the Rocky Birch Meadows and a Deforested Black Forest. The name "Blood Swamps", used for the swamp variant in some 1.0 coverage, does not appear in the patch notes and could not be traced to an official source as of Sep 11, 2026. See Deep North Update (1.0 Patch Notes).

Frequently asked questions

How do you summon Bonemass? Ten Withered Bones offered at the giant glowing skull altar in the Swamp. The bones come from Muddy Scrap Piles and the floors of Sunken Crypts, and the altar's position is marked by Vegvisir runestones in ruined towers and crypts.

How do you open a Sunken Crypt? With the Swamp Key, dropped by The Elder in the Black Forest. The iron gate at each crypt entrance opens only with it, so the crypts enforce the boss order.

What should you bring to the Swamp in Valheim? Poison Resistance Mead, which lasts ten minutes and cuts poison damage by three quarters; a blunt weapon, because blobs, oozers and skeletons are all weak to blunt; and a pickaxe for the Muddy Scrap Piles. Dock the boat on a neighboring Meadows or Black Forest shore rather than in the mire.

Where do you find iron in Valheim? In the Swamp's Sunken Crypts. Muddy Scrap Piles yield Scrap Iron to any pickaxe, chests hold stacks of up to twenty, and the Scrap Iron is smelted into Iron in the Smelter and worked at the Forge.

Where is the Bog Witch? In a swamp between 3,000 and 8,000 meters from the world center. The Bog Witch has up to ten candidate locations per world, and the first one a player comes near becomes her permanent home, marked with a cauldron icon on the map.
