Armor and Capes

Valheim's armor from rags to the 1.0 Protector, Vanguard, Caller and Lox Fur sets: how armor reduces damage, every biome's sets and bonuses, the Bear and Vilebone sets, capes and frost resistance, the Crown of Valheim, and clothing that carries no armor.

Armor in Valheim is clothing that reduces the damage a Viking takes. It is worn in four slots, head, chest, legs and cape, and every biome from the Meadows to the Deep North adds at least one set made from its materials, usually a heavy set with the most armor beside a light or magic set that trades armor for bonuses. Because blocking, parrying and dodging avoid damage altogether (Combat), guides treat the armor value as only one factor: SnazzyGames' 2025 armor guide opens by calling it "kind of overrated" and weighs set effects and movement speed alongside it. The Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026 added four armor sets and two capes (Iron Gate, Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!).

Quick facts

Slots Four: head, chest, legs and cape
Crafted at Workbench, Forge, Black Forge or Galdr Table, and upgraded at the same station
Quality 1 to 4; each step adds 2 armor to a helmet, chest or leg piece and 1 to a cape
Damage reduction Subtracted while armor is under half the incoming hit; above that, the hit squared divided by four times the armor
Movement penalty -5% for each heavy chest or leg piece, -2% for Root and mage pieces, +3% for each Fenris piece
Sets At least one in every biome from the Meadows to the Deep North, usually a heavy set beside a light or mage one
Most armor The Deep North's Protector set, 44 a piece, and the Crown of Valheim at 50
Added in 1.0 Four sets (Protector, Vanguard, Caller and Lox Fur) and two capes

How armor works

Pieces are crafted at a workbench, forge, black forge or galdr table and upgraded at the same station up to quality 4, although the station's own upgrade level often sets a lower ceiling; the Rag set stops at quality 2. Each upgrade adds 2 armor to a helmet, chest or leg piece and 1 to a cape, and upgrading a worn piece takes it off, so it has to be put back on before leaving the base (Armor, Valheim Wiki). Heavy sets slow the wearer by 5% for each chest and leg piece, which also raises the stamina cost of a dodge roll; the chest and leg pieces of the Root and mage sets cost 2% each, while each Fenris piece adds 3% speed.

Armor reduces physical, fire, frost and lightning damage. While the armor value is less than half the incoming hit it is simply subtracted; above that, the damage taken is the square of the hit divided by four times the armor, so a 100-damage blow against 60 armor does about 42. The wiki notes that every point is still worth the same in hits survived (Damage mechanics, Valheim Wiki).

Sets by biome

A new Viking starts in a Rag tunic and pants made from Leather scraps and soon moves to the Leather set of deer hide and bone fragments, with the Deer hide cape in the fourth slot. From there each biome offers a choice, summarized below.

Biome Set Type Armor per piece (quality 1 to 4) Set bonus and effects
Meadows Rag Light 1 to 2 Two pieces only
Meadows Leather Light 2 to 8 None
Black Forest Troll Light 6 to 12 +15 Sneak
Black Forest Bear Light 7 to 13 Berserk: +30% health and +15% stamina regeneration, +10% slash and chop, 25% more physical damage taken
Black Forest Bronze Heavy 8 to 14 None
Swamp Root Light 8 to 14 +15 Bows; mask resists poison, harnesk resists pierce, weak to fire
Swamp Iron Heavy 14 to 20 None
Mountain Fenris Light 10 to 16 +3% speed per piece, +15 Fists; coat resists frost
Mountain Wolf Heavy 20 to 26 Chest piece resists frost
Plains Vilebone Light 12 to 24 Vilebone Wrath: +20% health and +40% stamina regeneration, +20% blunt and pierce, 25% more physical damage taken
Plains Padded Heavy 26 to 32 None
Mistlands Eitr-weave Mage 16 to 22 Up to +100% eitr regeneration
Mistlands Carapace Heavy 32 to 38 None
Ashlands Embla Mage 19 to 25 Up to +130% eitr regeneration
Ashlands Ask Light 28 to 34 Ask's Endurance: -10% run and jump stamina, -20% attack stamina, +10% pierce
Ashlands Flametal Heavy 38 to 44 +20% heat resistance on chest and legs

Sources: Armor, Bear Set, Vilebone Set and Ask Set, Valheim Wiki. The four 1.0 sets are listed further down.

The Black Forest is where the choice begins. The Troll set rewards stealth, Bronze armor from the new Forge is the first heavy set, and the Bear set sits between them in armor. SnazzyGames prefers the Bear set paired with a Bronze buckler, reasoning that a player who parries everything never needs the extra armor (Weapons and Shields).

The Swamp adds Iron armor and the Root set, whose harnesk halves pierce damage and stays useful into the late game, while the mask halves poison; guides suggest mixing an Iron helmet and greaves with the Root harnesk. In the Mountain, the Wolf chest piece resists frost, and the Fenris set, made from Fenring hair found in the Frost Caves added in 2022, trades armor for speed and a fist-fighting bonus (Frost Caves Update).

The Plains had only Padded armor, of iron and linen thread, until Call to Arms added the Vilebone set. The Linen cape is the only cape with color choices, while the Lox cape, uglier by SnazzyGames' account, resists frost. In 1.0 the biome also gained the Lox Fur set, described with the other 1.0 armor below.

With magic, the Mistlands and Ashlands each offer a mage set as well as a heavy one. Eitr-weave and Embla are made at the galdr table and raise eitr regeneration, Carapace and Flametal at the black forge; the Ashlands' light Ask set suits spear and bow users with its pierce bonus. At the time of SnazzyGames' November 2025 guide, station upgrades still capped the Ashlands armor at quality 3 (Magic and Staves; Crafting Stations and Upgrades).

Bear and Vilebone sets

The Call to Arms Update of September 2025 added two sets that sit between light and heavy armor, the Bear set of the Black Forest and the Vilebone set of the Plains. The Headdress, Patterns and Loincloth of the Bear are made from Bear hide, Bear paws, Blueberries and a Bear trophy; the Vilebone Visage, Cage and Drapes from Bear hide, Vile ribcages, linen and a Vile trophy. Both full sets grant large regeneration and damage bonuses but make the wearer 25% weaker to blunt, slash and pierce, which SnazzyGames calls a glass-cannon build (Iron Gate, Patch 0.221.4). The Five Years of Valheim patch of February 2026 then made unspecified changes to the Bear set, which the game's files call berserker armor (Iron Gate, Patch 0.221.10).

Capes

Most capes add a single point of armor and are chosen for their effects, above all frost resistance, which keeps off the Freezing debuff of the Mountain and the Deep North (Weather, Cold and Wet). The Ashlands' Ashen cape broke the pattern with 12 armor at base, and both 1.0 capes match it.

Cape Biome Armor Effects
Deer hide cape Meadows 1 None
Troll hide cape Black Forest 1 Part of the Troll set
Wolf fur cape Mountain 1 Frost resistance
Lox cape Plains 1 Frost resistance
Linen cape Plains 1 Several colors
Feather cape Mistlands 1 Frost resistance, no fall damage, -20% jump stamina; double fire damage
Asksvin cloak Ashlands 1 Frost resistance, Wind Run, -15% dodge stamina
Ashen cape Ashlands 12 Frost resistance, -10% attack and -20% block stamina
Moose Hide Cape Deep North 12 Frost resistance, -20% attack and run stamina
Cape of the Caller Deep North 12 Frost resistance, +20% eitr regeneration, -10% dodge stamina

Sources: Armor, Valheim Wiki; Sportskeeda for the 1.0 capes.

The Feather cape's extra jump height was removed by The Bog Witch Update in 2024 and moved to the Lightfoot mead (Mead and Potions; Iron Gate, Patch 0.219.13). Since 1.0, capes and other cloth items move with the new Magica Cloth physics (Iron Gate, Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!).

Deep North armor

The Deep North adds three sets that are cast rather than crafted: the heavy Protector, the medium Vanguard and the mage's Caller. Each piece needs a mould. SnazzyGames found the Protector's on two-handed Krigen, the Vanguard's on one-handed Krigen and the Caller's on the flying Hexen, each at only 3% in the press build he played, and Game8 adds wardrobes as a source. A mould and its materials make a cast at the black forge, or the galdr table for the Caller, and the cast is hardened in the Frost Foundry like a Nord weapon (Weapons and Shields; Deep North Creatures). The 1.0 patch also changed how rare drops work, so that players no longer kill many enemies without ever receiving one (Iron Gate, Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!). The heavy and medium moulds still proved scarce, and Patch 1.0.15 of Sep 18, 2026 raised their drop chance by making both kinds of Krigen, the one-handed and the two-handed, drop both the Vanguard and the Protector moulds (Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.15; Patches Since 1.0).

Set Type Armor per piece Effects Mould source
Protector: Helmet, Breastplate, Trousers Heavy 44 Breastplate resists frost Krigen (only the two-handed kind until patch 1.0.15)
Vanguard: Hood, Chestpiece, Trousers Medium 34 Set: -10% run and -20% dodge stamina, +10% health and stamina regeneration, +10% pierce Krigen (only the one-handed kind until patch 1.0.15)
Caller: Headdress, Robes, Trousers Mage 22 +40%, +60% and +60% eitr regeneration; robes resist frost Hexen
Lox Fur: Hood, Jacket, Trousers Light 16 Boon of the Lox: +30 Sneak, +15 Bows No mould

Sources: BisectHosting; Beebom.

Every Protector cast takes 20 Bloodgold with Moose Hide, and Leather Straps for the breastplate and trousers. The Vanguard chestpiece and trousers take 12 Bloodgold and eight Elaking Hair Bundles each, the hood Seal Pelt, Moose Hide and Moose Sinew; the Caller robes and trousers take 6 Bloodgold, Moose Hide and Nornathread, and the headdress a Moose Trophy (Game8, List of All Moulds). At launch the heavy set could not be repaired; Hotfix 1.0.10 fixed that on Sep 11, 2026 (Iron Gate, Hotfix 1.0.10 & 1.0.12), and Patch 1.0.14 of Sep 17 closed a bug that let the Helmet of the Protector be crafted directly at the Black Forge (Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.14).

The two capes need no mould. The Moose Hide Cape takes six Moose Hide, two Moose Sinew and five Bloodgold; the Cape of the Caller six Seal Pelt, two Nornathread, five Bloodgold and 15 Refined Eitr (Sportskeeda).

The fourth set is not northern at all. The Lox Fur set is made from Lox Pelts, Bone Fragments and roots, the hood's from the Writhan that 1.0 added to the Swamp, and its bonus of +30 Sneak and +15 Bows makes it a hunter's outfit (Plains Creatures; BisectHosting).

Crown of Valheim

The last piece of headgear comes from the final boss. Kall Fimbulbringer drops the Crown Jewel, which is combined with Bloodgold into the Crown of Valheim: 50 armor, 5% faster movement and 20% less stamina spent on attacking, swimming, sneaking and running. Its Royalty effect stops creatures attacking the wearer even when attacked first, which turns the world into a place to build and gather in peace; SnazzyGames found that bosses still fight (Game8, Crown of Valheim). The 1.0 notes also list a purchasable Crown of Roots, whose details were not documented as of Sep 11, 2026. Full page: Crown of Valheim.

Clothing and cosmetic headgear

Some wearables are clothing rather than armor. Hildir, the trader of Hildir's Request Update, sells tunics and dresses that cut the stamina cost of tools by 20% and headscarves and caps that cut it by 15%, none with any armor, and The Bog Witch Update gave her a Harvest tunic, Harvest dress and Straw hat that together add +25 Farming (Hildir, Valheim Wiki). Call to Arms added a Sweat Band to her stock. Other headgear is mostly for show: the Five Years patch's Celebratory Cap (1 to 7 armor), and Haldor's Dverger circlet, a helmet-slot light with 2 armor, and Yule hat.

Upgrades and the Forge of Potential

Upgrading still happens at the crafting station. With the Smith's Aprons and Standing Loom built, the Deep North sets reach quality 3; beyond that lies the Forge of Potential, a single site in the Mountain where Protection Idols found in chests from the Meadows to the Deep North push armor past its normal maximum. Each attempt risks failure, which SnazzyGames puts at about 35%, destroying the item and returning only part of its materials. The 1.0 patch also increased the durability of Mistlands and Ashlands gear (Iron Gate, Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best armor in Valheim? By armor value it is the Deep North's Protector set at 44 a piece, cast from moulds dropped by Krigen (since patch 1.0.15 of Sep 18, 2026, both kinds). Guides treat armor as only one factor, though: the Bear and Vilebone sets trade 25% more physical damage taken for large regeneration and damage bonuses, and blocking, parrying and dodging avoid damage altogether.

How does armor reduce damage in Valheim? While the armor value is less than half the incoming hit it is simply subtracted. Above that, the damage taken is the square of the hit divided by four times the armor, so a 100-damage blow against 60 armor does about 42.

Which capes give frost resistance? The Wolf fur cape, Lox cape, Feather cape, Asksvin cloak, Ashen cape, Moose Hide Cape and Cape of the Caller. Frost resistance keeps off the Freezing debuff of the Mountain and the Deep North (Weather, Cold and Wet).

Can armor be upgraded past quality 4? Only at the Forge of Potential, the hidden site in the Mountain where Protection Idols gamble on one further level. Each attempt risks destroying the item, which SnazzyGames puts at about 35%, so the guaranteed upgrades are done at the ordinary station first.

Does heavy armor slow you down? Yes. Each heavy chest and leg piece costs 5% movement speed, which also raises the stamina cost of a dodge roll. Root and mage chest and leg pieces cost 2% each, while every Fenris piece adds 3% speed.
