Deathsquito
The Deathsquito, the giant mosquito of Valheim's Plains: a 10-health insect whose 90-pierce sting can kill an unarmored Viking. How it attacks, how much each armor set lets through, how to kill it with bows, shields and spears, Anti-Sting mead, walls it cannot cross, and the Needle it drops.
The Deathsquito is a giant mosquito of the Plains in Valheim, a buzzing, long-legged insect with a red abdomen and only 10 health whose single sting deals 90 pierce damage. That is enough to kill an unarmored Viking and to stagger one whose health or armor is low, which makes it the creature most responsible for the Plains' reputation: new arrivals who try to outrun one usually run out of stamina first. It dies to any hit that lands, and it drops the Needle used for Needle arrows and the Porcupine mace. The rest of the biome's creatures are on Plains Creatures.

How a Deathsquito attacks
A deathsquito that has spotted a player circles it for roughly five to ten seconds, then flies at it in a straight line and stings on contact, lunging through a sixty-degree arc. After the strike it pulls away, circles again and repeats. The buzzing gives it away before it can be seen, and it flies over walls and fences with ease. Because it belongs to the Plains faction it never troubles fulings or wild lox, but it does attack a player's tamed lox (Lox, Valheim Wiki).
Running is a defense in itself: the wiki notes that a deathsquito always misses a Viking who keeps running away without any movement-speed penalty from weapons or armor (Aggressive creature strategies, Valheim Wiki). The danger is stopping, or running out of stamina.
How much a sting hurts at each armor tier
In a December 2021 test with every set at maximum quality and a cape, FingerPanic measured the average damage a sting got through. Armor subtracts or divides the incoming 90 pierce, so each heavier tier helps, but the light Root set does best of all, because its harness adds pierce resistance on top of its armor value (Armor and Capes).
| Armor set (max quality) | Armor | Average sting damage |
|---|---|---|
| Troll | 40 | 42 |
| Bronze | 46 | 40 |
| Iron | 64 | 29 to 30 |
| Wolf | 82 | 21 |
| Padded | 100 | 18 |
| Root | 46 | 10 |
For a player arriving from the Mountain in Wolf armor, a sting is a nuisance rather than a death sentence, and Padded armor, made from Iron and the Plains' linen thread, trims it a little further.
The Root harness, crafted from the Roots of the Swamp's Abominations, is the well-known shortcut: JP Valheim wore nothing else, eight armor in total, and took only about 20 damage from a sting. Anyone going into the Plains early for lox meat or barley should wear one.
How to kill a Deathsquito
With 10 health a deathsquito dies to the first blow of any weapon, so the whole problem is timing the hit, and the bow is the classic answer. Shots at a circling deathsquito usually miss, so the trick is to draw while it circles and release as it turns and flies straight in, when it makes an easy target; a clean hit with any arrow, even a wooden one, kills it (Bows, Crossbows and Arrows).
A shield works once it is strong enough. With more than 90 block power the sting is absorbed completely and a fast counter with a knife or sword kills it, and a parry with a Bronze Buckler or better also stops it, although the insect's immunity to stagger means the parry only bumps it back (Aggressive creature strategies, Valheim Wiki; Parrying and Blocking). Blocking with too little block power still lets most of the damage through.
Reach weapons are the melee alternative. A spear or a two-handed mace swung like a bat as the deathsquito arrives catches it at the end of its dive, provided the player is on level ground with it, since it attacks in a straight line from wherever it is.
The Bog Witch update's Anti-Sting Concoction removes the problem for ten minutes: deathsquitos still approach but break off three to eight meters away instead of stinging. A Mead Ketill turns 10 Cloudberries, 3 Grouper and 1 Fragrant Bundle into a base that ferments into six bottles (Anti-Sting Concoction, Valheim Wiki; Mead and Potions).
Keeping deathsquitos out of a base
Crops need open sky, so a Plains barley farm cannot simply be roofed. FireSpark81 found that a deathsquito follows a wall along its face until it finds the top edge, then hops over and dives on the farmer.
The fix is to make the top edge "fuzzy": a staggered row of wooden beams leaning out from the top of the wall, with gaps between them, confuses its pathfinding so it bounces against the wall and gives up. The AI recognizes walls, floors and roofs as obstacles but not beams, and because it dives straight at its target, the player's head should stay below the top of the wall.
Needle: what the drop makes
Each kill yields one Needle; more can be found in chests in Fuling villages and ruins. Needles make two things (Needle, Valheim Wiki):
| Item | Recipe | Station | Stats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needle arrow (20) | 4 Needle, 2 Feathers | Workbench level 4 | 62 pierce |
| Porcupine | 5 Fine Wood, 20 Iron, 5 Needle, 10 Linen Thread | Forge level 4 | 50 blunt, 45 pierce |
Needle arrows follow Obsidian arrows as the strongest ordinary arrow of the Plains era and need no wood. The Porcupine is the only Black Metal-tier weapon that needs no Black Metal, and its mix of blunt and pierce gives steady damage against almost anything (Needle Arrow and Porcupine, Valheim Wiki). The trophy has no crafting use.
Deathsquito history
The deathsquito arrived in Iron Gate's development news of Oct 30, 2020, three months before early access, together with the Needle and the Porcupine, introduced with the line "The only thing scarier than a mosquito is a deathsquito" (Development news and new content, Steam). The patch notes of the Valheim 1.0 Release in September 2026 do not mention it, but in January 2026 Iron Gate teased snow spreading beyond the north with a picture of deathsquitos over frost-covered Plains, and in 1.0 a Jotun invasion does turn the Plains around it wintry (Word From the Devs: It's Freezing!, Steam; Kysen; Raids and Events).
Frequently asked questions
How do you survive deathsquitos in Valheim? Wear the Root harness or heavy armor, carry a bow or a strong shield, and never stand still: shoot or strike as it flies straight at you, or keep running, since it cannot sting a Viking who runs without a speed penalty.
What armor stops deathsquitos? The Root harness, thanks to its pierce resistance; a full Root set cut a sting to about 10 damage in FingerPanic's test. Among heavier sets, Padded armor lets about 18 through.
Can deathsquitos fly over walls? Yes. They follow a wall to its top and hop over, but a staggered, gapped row of beams along the top edge confuses them.
What is the Needle used for? Needle arrows (four Needles and two Feathers make 20) and the Porcupine mace.
Do deathsquitos only come out at night? No. They spawn in the Plains by day and night, up to three in an area.
