The Bog Witch Update was the sixth named content update of Valheim's early access. It went live on Oct 29, 2024 as patch 0.219.13, two weeks after reaching the public-test branch. Unlike the Ashlands Update before it, it added no biome; it was built around homesteading, with a third trader, The Bog Witch, living in the Swamp, feasts shared from the table, new potions, three new skills and new tools and workstations for the kitchen and the field. Iron Gate's abbreviated notes list a new trader and trader location, the feast mechanic with eight feasts, 16 crafting materials, eight potions, three items of clothing, three skills, four build pieces, two tools, three emotes and one event, plus bug fixes and performance improvements (Iron Gate, Patch 0.219.13 – The Bog Witch).

Development and release

Iron Gate teased the update through the second half of 2024. An August development blog promised an overhaul of Hildir's wares and camp and showed "something brand new brewing in the Swamps"; September's post looked inside a hut there and announced that the studio would talk about it on The Spill, a Coffee Stain livestream on Oct 8 (Development Blog: New and Improved; Development Blog: Counting Down). Patch 0.219.10 opened the public test on Oct 15, 2024 with the update's trailer, and a second test build, 0.219.13, followed on Oct 24 (Patch 0.219.10 – The Bog Witch (Public Test)). Five days later the same build went live for everyone.

The trader

The Bog Witch is a Greydwarf trader who keeps a hut in the Swamp, protected by a dome that creatures cannot cross and swept by the Kvastur, an animated broom that drops a trophy when killed. Like Haldor and Hildir she has up to ten possible sites in each world, and the first one a player finds becomes her only home. She sells candle wicks, the Serving Tray, a Love Potion and the ingredients for the new potions and feasts, and her stock grows as bosses are defeated. The other traders gained stock too: Haldor began selling Barrel Rings for a new storage barrel, and Hildir the Harvest Tunic, Harvest Dress and Straw Hat, which raise Farming.

Feasts and the Serving Tray

Feasts were the update's central mechanic: large meals that last longer than ordinary food and can be shared among several people. Eight shipped, one for each biome from the Whole Roasted Meadows Boar to the Ashlands Gourmet Bowl, plus Sailor's Bounty for the sea. Each is prepared at the new Food Preparation Table with one of the Bog Witch's spices, set down whole and eaten serving by serving, ten servings to a feast, each lasting 50 minutes (Food and Cooking).

Setting a feast down needs the Serving Tray, a tool that works like the hammer. It opens a menu of every consumable in the inventory, and any of them, a feast, a single dish or a mead, can be placed on the ground or a table, where it steams and can be eaten or drunk directly without being picked up. The update thereby turned food into decoration as well as supplies (Furniture and Decoration).

Potions

Eight potions were added, each built on an ingredient bought from the Bog Witch: the Tonic of Ratatosk for movement speed, Lightfoot Mead for higher and cheaper jumps, the Draught of Vananidir for swimming stamina, the Mead of Troll Endurance for 250 extra carry weight, the Brew of Animal Whispers for taming, the Anti-Sting Concoction, which keeps Deathsquitos away, and the Berserkir Mead, which cuts the stamina cost of attacking, blocking and dodging by 80 per cent at the price of weakness to physical damage. The eighth, the Love Potion, can only be bought (Mead and Potions). Lightfoot Mead took over the Feather Cape's jump-height bonus, which the cape lost.

Skills, tools and workstations

Three homesteading Skills arrived. Cooking shortens the time it takes to make food and gives a chance of an extra portion; Farming reduces the stamina cost and wear of the Cultivator and gives a chance of a bonus crop; Crafting shortens crafting times, slows the wear of crafting tools and reduces the stamina cost of placing build pieces. The Scythe, made from a handle bought from the Bog Witch, knocks a whole cone of crops out of the ground in one swing (Tools; Farming and Taming).

The update also split the kitchen across two new workstations. Mead bases moved from the Cauldron to the Mead Ketill, which must stand over a burning fire, and uncooked food such as dough and feasts moved to the Food Preparation Table. The remaining build pieces were the storage Barrel and the Resin Candle, a light that burns down over time (Crafting Stations and Upgrades).

Other changes

A new raid sends ghosts and wraiths after the player (Raids and Events), and three emotes were added: Relax and Rest, which lay the character down, and Toast. Ivy seeds, sold by the Bog Witch, grow up the walls of a base.

The most visible convenience was bulk crafting: holding Shift, or the left stick on a controller, crafts five of an item at once. Other fixes steadied frame rates around large bases, updated the engine to Unity 2022.3.50, cured input loss at low frame rates and a knockback bug when hitting enemies on steep slopes, added a sortcraft console command, and refreshed Hildir's camp and the names of items in her shop (Console Commands, Cheats and Mods).

Reception and aftermath

Coverage treated it as a welcome change of pace after the endgame-focused Ashlands. Screen Rant called it "a fantastic quality of life update" and reported Iron Gate's plan to revisit earlier biomes so that the early and mid game would reward new and experienced players alike (Screen Rant); YouTuber NickRawcliffe called it one of the most fun updates Iron Gate had made. Players came back in moderate numbers: SteamCharts' November 2024 average was a third higher than October's, with a peak of 51,524 concurrent players against 36,860 the month before (SteamCharts).

Two patches followed. Hotfix 0.219.14 on Oct 30 fixed fiddly controller input in the inventory, feasts that refilled when a player logged back in to a server, and servers that could not be joined by DNS name; 0.219.16 on Nov 19 repaired gamepad menus, stopped several players eating the same piece of served food, removed the Crafting skill's bonus yield on weapons and armor and reworked the Asksvin Cape (Patch 0.219.14; Patch 0.219.16). Iron Gate's November blog then declared the team "all hands on deck" with the Deep North and 1.0 (Development Blog: Lighting the Way). The next update, Call to Arms Update, came in September 2025, and Deep North Update (1.0 Patch Notes) later added a ninth feast, Northern Morning Fare.
