Food and Cooking
How eating works in Valheim: three food slots that raise health, stamina and Eitr, the cooking station, cauldron, oven, food preparation table and Smoker, the Cooking skill, the Bog Witch's feasts and serving tray, and the twenty-plus foods the Deep North added at 1.0.
Food in Valheim is a system of timed buffs rather than a hunger meter: every dish raises a Viking's maximum health, stamina or Eitr for a set number of minutes, and only three can be held at once. A Viking who never eats does not starve; instead, food is the main way to raise the three bars that decide what a character can survive and do: maximum health, maximum stamina and, from the Mistlands onward, Eitr, the resource that powers magic (Wikipedia). Every food raises one or more of those maximums for a limited time, and only three different foods can be active at once, so what to eat before a boss fight or a voyage is a constant decision. Cooking equipment grows with the biomes, from a wooden spit over a campfire in the Meadows to the Smoker and the Northern Morning Fare feast of the Deep North, which arrived with the Valheim 1.0 Release on Sep 9, 2026.
Quick facts
| What it does | Raises maximum health, stamina and Eitr for a limited time; nobody starves |
| Food slots | Three, and no food can be eaten twice at once, so a full belly is always three different dishes |
| Decay | bonus = base x (remaining time / total time)^0.3; the icon flashes at the halfway mark |
| Durations | About 10 minutes for raw forage up to 50 minutes for a feast |
| Stations | Cooking station, iron cooking station, cauldron, stone oven, food preparation table, mead ketill |
| Cauldron levels | Seven by 1.0, from the Spice Rack of the Swamp to the Smoker of the Deep North |
| Cooking skill | Up to 60% faster crafting, up to a 25% chance of an extra product, half the serving tray's stamina cost |
| Feasts | Nine, each 10 servings lasting 50 minutes, placed with the serving tray; the strongest is Northern Morning Fare at 85 health, 85 stamina and 43 Eitr |
Three bars, three slots
Each food's icon carries a colored fork that shows what it mainly gives: red for health, yellow for stamina, white for a balance of the two, and blue for Eitr. A character has three food slots, shown beside the health bar, and no food can be eaten twice at the same time, so a full belly always means three different foods (Valheim Wiki). Guides usually advise two stamina foods and one health food for exploring and building, two health foods and one stamina food for a boss, and Eitr foods only when a staff is in hand. See Combat and Magic and Staves.
A food's bonus decays over its duration, slowly at first and then steeply near the end, following the formula bonus = base × (remaining time ÷ total time)^0.3 (Valheim Wiki). At the halfway point the icon starts to flash, the signal that the food can be replaced. Durations run from about 10 minutes for early forage to 50 minutes for a feast, and health foods generally last longer and heal more per tick than stamina foods.
Two items empty the stomach on purpose: Bukeperries from the Black Forest and rotten meat from the Ashlands make the character vomit and clear all three slots. A Rested, Comfort and Sleeping buff stacks on top of food, and so do the meads described under Mead and Potions.
How the system grew
The food system was overhauled in the Hearth & Home Update of Sep 16, 2021, which split foods into health-focused and stamina-focused dishes and added the food bar beside the health bar (Valheim Wiki version history). The Mistlands Update of December 2022 added Eitr and the first foods that raise it, without which staves cannot be cast. The Bog Witch Update of October 2024 changed cooking more than any patch before it: it added the Cooking skill, multi-serving feasts, the food preparation table, the mead ketill and the serving tray (Screen Rant). Version 1.0 then added "20+ new food items", the Smoker extension for the cauldron, four new crops and an overhauled serving-tray menu (KeenGamer, 1.0 patch notes).
Cooking stations
The first kitchen is a cooking station, a wooden spit costing 2 Wood that only works with a fire beneath it: a campfire, hearth or hanging brazier. Raw meat cooks on it in 25 seconds (Hare Meat takes 60), and meat left on the spit afterwards burns to Coal (Valheim Wiki). Several stations fit over one campfire. The iron cooking station (3 Chain, 3 Iron), built once Swamp iron is flowing, holds five pieces over a hearth or two campfires and is the only spit big enough for Lox, Serpent, Seeker, Bonemaw, Volture and Moose Meat (Valheim Wiki).
The cauldron (10 Tin, also needing a fire under it) unlocks in the Black Forest and combines ingredients into recipes. It levels up through extensions built nearby, each unlocking a tier of dishes; by 1.0 there are six (Valheim Wiki):
| Level | Extension | Materials | Biome |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Spice Rack | 3 Dandelion, 2 Carrot, 5 Mushroom, 3 Thistle, 3 Turnip | Swamp |
| 3 | Butcher's Table | 2 Ancient Bark, 4 Core Wood, 4 Fine Wood, 2 Silver | Mountain |
| 4 | Pots and Pans | 5 Iron, 5 Copper, 5 Black Metal, 10 Fine Wood | Plains |
| 5 | Mortar and Pestle | 8 Black Marble, 6 Fine Wood, 4 Core Wood | Mistlands |
| 6 | Rolling Pins and Cutting Boards | 8 Ashwood, 6 Fine Wood, 4 Flametal | Ashlands |
| 7 | Smoker | 5 Bloodgold, 6 Timberwood | Deep North |
The stone oven (15 Iron, 20 Stone, 4 Surtling Cores) needs an Artisan Table, so it waits for the Dragon Tears that Moder drops. It holds 10 Wood as fuel and bakes up to four items in 50 seconds each; anything left inside more than 100 seconds after baking turns to coal. Bread, pies, Fish 'n' Bread, Misthare Supreme, Kale Chips and Baked Poteitr all pass through it (Valheim Wiki). Barley and, since 1.0, Oats are ground for it at the Windmill. See Crafting Stations and Upgrades and Farming and Taming.
The Bog Witch update split the cauldron's job three ways. Mead bases moved to the mead ketill, and the new food preparation table (5 Iron, 20 Fine Wood, 15 Leather Scraps) took over every "uncooked" item that must then go into the oven, along with raw fish, fishing bait and all the feasts (Valheim Wiki). The table has no upgrades and must stand under a roof. Since 1.0 the ketill also makes Oat Milk. Three of the Deep North's oven dishes were left out of that split at first: until Patch 1.0.21 of Oct 28, 2026 their uncooked stage (Unbaked Poteitr, Raw Kale Chips and Oven Pancake Batter) was made in the cauldron. Iron Gate moved all three to the food preparation table in that patch and fixed their tooltips, so every "uncooked" food now comes from the table and goes into the stone oven (Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.21).
The Cooking skill
Cooking is one of three crafting-type Skills added by the Bog Witch update. Raising it does three things: it cuts crafting time at the cauldron, food preparation table and mead ketill by up to 60 percent, it gives up to a 25 percent chance of one extra product per craft, and it halves the stamina the serving tray uses (Valheim Wiki). The bonus product also applies when food is lifted off a cooking station or out of the oven, so dishes that are prepared and then baked roll for it twice. Holding Shift crafts five at a time and rolls the bonus for each.
The skill gains 0.25 experience for each food item crafted, 0.1 for placing an item on a cooking station or in the oven and 0.15 for taking it out, coal included. Bread is the usual training food because barley is cheap to farm and each loaf counts at both the table and the oven.
Feasts and the serving tray
Feasts are placeable multi-serving meals made at the food preparation table from cooked dishes of a biome plus a spice sold by The Bog Witch. Each spice is gated behind a boss: the Woodland Herb Blend appears in her stock after The Elder, and covers the Meadows, Black Forest and Swamp feasts; later blends follow Moder, Yagluth, The Queen and Fader; the Sailor's Bounty needs Seafarer's Herbs, unlocked by killing a Serpent (SnazzyGames). A feast gives 10 servings and lasts 50 minutes, with health and stamina rising in step through the tiers, so the best feast a player can make is always the one to eat (Valheim Wiki):
| Feast | Biome | Health | Stamina | Eitr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whole Roasted Meadow Boar | Meadows | 35 | 35 | 2 |
| Black Forest Buffet Platter | Black Forest | 35 | 35 | 3 |
| Swamp Dweller's Delight | Swamp | 35 | 35 | 3 |
| Sailor's Bounty | Ocean | 45 | 45 | 3 |
| Hearty Mountain Logger's Stew | Mountain | 45 | 45 | 3 |
| Plains Pie Picnic | Plains | 55 | 55 | 4 |
| Mushrooms Galore á la Mistlands | Mistlands | 65 | 65 | 33 |
| Ashlands Gourmet Bowl | Ashlands | 75 | 75 | 38 |
| Northern Morning Fare | Deep North | 85 | 85 | 43 |
Feasts cannot be eaten from the inventory. They must be set down with the serving tray, a two-handed tool the Bog Witch sells for 140 Coins that places any food, mead or feast directly on a floor or table without an item stand; anyone who walks up can then eat straight from the surface (Valheim Wiki). Removing a feast that has been partly eaten destroys it, and the tray warns before it does. A placed feast shrinks visibly through four stages as its servings go. Because one feast feeds a whole crew for the price of a few dishes, guides treat feasts as base food and ordinary dishes as travel food. The 1.0 release reorganized the tray's placement menu in the same overhaul that rebuilt the hammer's (Iron Gate, "Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!").
Eitr foods
Eitr foods are what make Magic and Staves usable: a character with no Eitr food has no Eitr bar at all. The Mistlands introduced Seeker Aspic, Yggdrasil Porridge and Magically Stuffed Shroom, the Ashlands added Marinated Greens and the Sparkling Shroomshake, and the Deep North's Baked Poteitr, Smoked Fish, Fish Soup, Meatballs and Poteitr and Oven Pancake are the biggest of all, at around 100 Eitr each. Mage builds typically run two Eitr foods and one health food, or a feast in place of the third slot.
Deep North foods
Version 1.0 added more new foods than any earlier update: Baked Poteitr, Cooked Moose Meat, Cooked Seal Blubber, Fish Soup, Kale, Kale Chips, Lingonberries, Lingonberry Juice, Luminous Larva, Meat In Bread, Meatballs and Poteitr, Oats, Oat Flour, Oat Milk, Oatmeal, Oven Pancake, Pancakes, Poteitr, Pulled Bear, Seal Meat Soup, Smoked Fish and Smoked Moose Meat, plus the Northern Morning Fare feast (BisectHosting, 1.0 patch notes). They rest on three new crops and two new meats.
Lingonberries grow on bushes in the Deep North's forests and are foraged rather than planted; raw they are a balanced 35 health and 35 stamina snack. Kale seeds can be picked from wild sprouts, and Kale goes into most of the biome's recipes (Valheim Wiki).
Oat Seeds and Seed Poteitr are found only in the barrels of the pantry building in every Abandoned Village. Poteitr, the biome's potato, is the first raw crop to carry Eitr, and Kale, Oats and Poteitr grow in the same conditions as carrots, onions and turnips. Oat Seeds are processed at the Windmill into Oats, and Oats go through the Windmill a second time for Oat Flour (Valheim Wiki).
Seals and Baby Seals drop Seal Blubber, and Moose drop Moose Meat, the base of the Deep North's health dishes. The Smoker, the cauldron's seventh extension, cures Moose Meat and fish into the smoked dishes (BisectHosting, 1.0 food guide). See Deep North Creatures.

| Northern Morning Fare (feast) | 85 | 85 | 43 | 50 min, 10 servings | food preparation table | 3 Cooked Moose Meat, 5 Poteitr, 2 Oat Flour, 1 Seasoning of the Gourd |
Stats are from the Valheim Wiki item pages and BisectHosting's 1.0 food guide; the wiki's Deep North pages were still marked as works in progress in launch week, so a few durations and station levels may yet be corrected.
The Northern Morning Fare, the ninth and strongest feast, unlocks only after Kall Fimbulbringer is defeated and the Seasoning of the Gourd has been bought from the Bog Witch, a reward for finishing the game rather than a tool for doing so. For the final fight itself, launch-week guides recommend Seal Meat Soup, Meat In Bread and Smoked Moose Meat together, the largest health pool the game allows (XGamingServer). Which animals to farm for the meat is covered under Farming and Taming and Fishing.
Frequently asked questions
How many foods can you eat at once in Valheim? Three, and all three must be different, because no food can be eaten twice at the same time. Guides usually advise two stamina foods and one health food for exploring or building, and two health foods and one stamina food for a boss fight.
How do you clear your food slots? Eat Bukeperries from the Black Forest or rotten meat from the Ashlands. Both make the character vomit and empty all three slots, which is how a player swaps a traveling loadout for a fighting one without waiting.
What is the best food in Valheim? The Northern Morning Fare feast, at 85 health, 85 stamina and 43 Eitr, but it unlocks only after Kall Fimbulbringer is dead. For the final fight itself launch-week guides recommend Seal Meat Soup, Meat In Bread and Smoked Moose Meat together.
Do you need Eitr food to use magic? Yes. A character with no Eitr food has no Eitr bar at all, so staves cannot be cast. Mage builds typically run two Eitr foods and one health food, or a feast in the third slot. See Magic and Staves.
Where do you make Raw Kale Chips, Unbaked Poteitr and Oven Pancake Batter? At the food preparation table since Patch 1.0.21 of Oct 28, 2026 (before it, in the cauldron), then bake them in the stone oven to get Kale Chips, Baked Poteitr and Oven Pancake.
What does the Cooking skill do? It cuts crafting time at the cauldron, food preparation table and mead ketill by up to 60 percent, gives up to a 25 percent chance of one extra product per craft, and halves the stamina the serving tray uses. Bread is the usual training food, because each loaf counts at both the table and the oven.

ValheimValheim is an open-world survival game for one to ten players, developed by Iron Gate Studio and published by Coffee Stain Publishing. It entered Steam early access in February 2021 and reached its full 1.0 release on Sep 9, 2026. -
HealthHealth is Valheim's red bar: 25 points at base, raised only by food, restored every ten seconds by each food's healing value and faster when Rested, and worn down by damage that armor, resistances and blocking reduce. It also sizes the stagger bar. -
StaminaStamina is the yellow bar in Valheim that sprinting, jumping, swimming, attacking, blocking and dodging spend. It starts at 50, rises only with food, refills at 6 to 12 points a second, and is stretched by Rested, meads, skills, gear and Forsaken Powers. -
MistlandsThe sixth biome of Valheim, added in December 2022: a fog-bound land of black crags, Dvergr outposts and insectoid Seekers where the player unlocks magic, black marble and the boss fight against the Queen. -
EitrEitr is Valheim's purple magic resource, spent by every staff. A Viking has none until they eat an Eitr food; it refills at 2 to 4 points a second, faster with mage armor, Rested and The Queen's power, and is distinct from the Refined Eitr used to craft magic gear. -
MeadowsThe green starting biome of Valheim, home to the Sacrificial Stones, Eikthyr's altar, wood, flint, berries, deer and boar, and since 1.0 the Rocky Birch Meadows edge variant.
