Frostner
Frostner is a one-handed silver mace in Valheim that deals blunt, frost and spirit damage and slows what it hits. Made at a level 3 Forge from Silver, Ancient Bark, Ymir Flesh and Freeze Glands, it is the classic Bonemass weapon and stays useful into the Mistlands and Ashlands.
Frostner is a one-handed silver mace in Valheim that deals blunt, frost and spirit damage at once, slowing whatever it hits. It is crafted at a level 3 Forge from Silver and Freeze Glands from the Mountain, Ancient Bark from the Swamp and Ymir Flesh bought from the trader Haldor, and it is the fourth club in the game's progression, after the Club, Bronze Mace and Iron Mace. Guides treat it as the answer to Bonemass, and several still carry it in the Mistlands and Ashlands, two and three biomes later (Frostner, Valheim Wiki).

How to craft Frostner
The recipe is 10 Ancient Bark, 30 Silver, 5 Ymir Flesh and 5 Freeze Glands, made at a Forge with at least two extensions (Crafting Stations and Upgrades). Ancient Bark comes from the Swamp's ancient trees; the 30 Silver means digging out a buried vein, usually located with Bonemass's Wishbone, mining it with an Iron Pickaxe and smelting the ore, and silver cannot pass through a portal (Metals and Smelting). T0ssACoin notes that it can be made soon after reaching the Swamp, given a frost-resistance mead and a trip to Haldor.
Ymir Flesh is the ingredient that cannot be gathered. Haldor sells it for 120 coins apiece, 600 for one Frostner, and the wiki lists one other use, the Iron Sledge (Ymir Flesh, Valheim Wiki). Since patch 0.213.4 of February 2023 it goes on sale once The Elder is dead, rather than after Bonemass as the Mistlands Update had first set it (Patch 0.213.4, Iron Gate).
Freeze Glands come from the Mountain's Drakes, one per kill; ESO found them easier to hear than to see and down in four or so arrows, and warned that falling snow puts out the burning from fire arrows. The gland also makes Frost Arrows, the Staff of Frost and Eyescream (Freeze Gland, Valheim Wiki).

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 35 | 40 | 20 | 200 | 3 | 10 Ancient Bark, 30 Silver, 5 Ymir Flesh, 5 Freeze Glands |
| 2 | 35 | 46 | 20 | 250 | 4 | 15 Silver |
| 3 | 35 | 52 | 20 | 300 | 5 | 30 Silver |
| 4 | 35 | 58 | 20 | 350 | 6 | 45 Silver |

Upgrading raises only the frost damage, six points a level, for 90 more Silver and 120 in all; ESO thought it hardly worth it in 2021, and the numbers have not changed. Like every club, Frostner has a three-hit combo whose last blow does double damage and a slower secondary attack that deals 2.5 times the damage and staggers twice as hard; it blocks with 30 block armor (Combat; Skills).
Its knockback of 100 matches the Porcupine's and exceeds the Iron Mace's 90 (Clubs, Valheim Wiki). The wiki adds three quirks: frost damage lands instantly while spirit ticks over time; frost does not count towards stagger, so Frostner staggers less than blunt-only maces; and creatures standing in water are Wet and weak to frost.
Frost, spirit and the slowing effect
Frostner's strength is its mix of damage types. T0ssACoin notes that frost, then found only on the Mistwalker, the Staff of Frost and Frost Arrows, hurts many creatures that resist blunt. Its bad matchups resist several of its types at once: the Abomination resists blunt and is immune to frost and spirit, the Lox resists blunt and frost and is immune to spirit, and Moder and the Stone Golem are immune to frost and spirit (Abomination, Lox and Stone Golem, Valheim Wiki; Damage Types).
The frost slows every creature it hits for a few seconds, which turns crowds and fast enemies into manageable fights; T0ssACoin calls it one of the best weapons for a solo player for that reason, and SnazzyGames' weapon guide calls it very likely the most well-rounded weapon in the game (Status Effects).
Frostner against the bosses
T0ssACoin sums up the bosses: Frostner destroys Bonemass and Yagluth, does decently against The Queen and struggles with Moder. Bonemass is weak to both blunt and frost and immune to poison, which makes Frostner and the Iron Mace the natural melee choices for that fight (Bonemass, Valheim Wiki).
Moder is the exception. The frost dragon is fully immune to frost and spirit, so GlensGames tells players not to bother with Frostner there and uses the Silver Sword and a bow instead (Moder, Valheim Wiki).
Against Yagluth, GlensGames found that none of the new black metal weapons of the Plains beat the Silver Sword or Frostner, since the black metal weapons cost more stamina and Yagluth strongly resists pierce. When Yagluth stands high on his altar, the secondary attack's higher arc still reaches him.
Frostner in the Mistlands and Ashlands
In the Mistlands the largest share of Frostner's damage is frost, which the Seekers and their soldiers do not resist, while they resist all physical damage. T0ssACoin found it performing better there than some of the biome's own weapons, until the Mistwalker sword, which pairs slash with the same 40 frost, takes over.
SnazzyGames carries it one biome further. Before the Ashlands weapons, he recommends the Mistwalker and the "timeless" Frostner, because many of the biome's creatures, such as the Charred, are weak to spirit damage and the slow helps against the biome's hordes; he closes his guide by calling Frostner the best overall weapon in the game (Weapons and Shields).
Iron Gate's speedrun contest shows the same reputation. Time Traveler, who won the Trial of Tyr in October 2023 by killing every boss in 7 hours, 54 minutes and 22 seconds, told the studio he planned his seeded run around Haldor and Frostner, calling the mace insane because it comes mid-game and still works in the Mistlands (The Trial of Tyr – Announcing the Winners, Iron Gate; Hildir's Request Update).
Frostner in 1.0
The Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026 left Frostner's stats alone. A quality 4 Frostner can now be pushed further at the Forge of Potential with Battle Idols, at the risk of destroying it, and the Deep North added the next frost mace, the Frostfire Mace, a Nord Mace refined with Frostfire Essence that deals fire and frost (Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!, Iron Gate). The next one-handed club is the Porcupine.
Frequently asked questions
Is Frostner good against Bonemass? Yes. Bonemass is weak to both blunt and frost, the two main damage types of Frostner, and guides rank it among the best melee weapons for that fight.
Should you use Frostner against Moder? No. Moder is immune to frost and spirit, leaving only Frostner's 35 blunt; guides take the Silver Sword and a bow with Obsidian Arrows instead.
Is Frostner worth upgrading? Only partly. Each level adds 6 frost and some durability but no blunt or spirit: 90 more Silver buys 18 extra frost.
Where do you get Ymir Flesh for Frostner? From Haldor, the Black Forest trader, at 120 coins each once The Elder is dead; Frostner needs five.
Is Frostner still good in the Mistlands? Yes. Seekers resist every physical type but not frost, and several guides keep it until the Mistwalker or even into the Ashlands.
