Forge of Potential

A hidden upgrade station added in Valheim 1.0 that generates only in the Mountains, where Battle and Protection Idols gamble on raising weapons, tools and armor past quality 4, at the risk of destroying the item.

The Forge of Potential is a hidden upgrade station in the Mountain biome of Valheim where one idol buys a roughly 65 percent chance of raising an item a quality level and a 35 percent chance of destroying it. Also called the Hidden Forge, and known to the developer console as the upgrade station, it is a location added by the Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026, and the only way to raise an item beyond the ceiling of the ordinary crafting stations: quality 4, or quality 3 for Deep North gear (Crafting Stations and Upgrades). Instead of metal and station levels it consumes idols, small figures found in chests across the world (Battle and Protection Idols), and every attempt is a gamble: success adds a quality level, failure can destroy the item. Iron Gate's patch notes list the forge among 1.0's new locations and present the idols as mysterious finds to be carried to a hidden forge for a chance of upgrading items further (Iron Gate).

Quick facts

What it is A hidden upgrade station, also called the Hidden Forge, added by the Valheim 1.0 Release
Biome The Mountain only; ten possible sites per world, and the first one reached becomes that world's forge
Finding it Appears on the map within roughly 300 meters, as an icon resembling a ward
What it does Raises a weapon, tool, shield or piece of armor one quality level past the normal ceiling of 4 (3 for Deep North gear)
Cost One idol an attempt: Battle Idols for weapons, tools and staves, Protection Idols for armor, capes and shields
Idol tiers Eight, from Wooden to Bloodgold, following the biome ladder; found in chests (Battle and Protection Idols)
Risk A failed attempt destroys the item and returns about 35 percent of its materials; the idol is spent either way
Failure chance 35 percent an attempt in most guides, from a community reading of the game files; not published by Iron Gate
Reaching quality 10 Six wins in a row from quality 4: a 7.5 percent chance, about 35 idols on average

Location

The forge generates only in the Mountain biome. It works like the traders: a world has ten possible sites, and whichever one a player reaches first becomes the forge for that world (SnazzyGames; NickRawcliffe). On worlds created before 1.0 it can only appear in mountains nobody has explored, one reason Iron Gate advised starting a fresh world for the release (Game8; Deep North Update (1.0 Patch Notes)).

Coming within roughly 300 meters reveals it on the map with an icon resembling a ward. It is not a build piece, so it cannot be crafted, carried or moved; players usually set a portal beside it. Reaching it means the Mountain's cold and its wolves and drakes, so guides advise frost protection and at least iron-tier gear (Weather, Cold and Wet; Mountain Creatures).

As around the traders, nothing can be built in a small zone around the forge, but nothing shields a player inside it either. Its centerpiece is a table; interacting with it opens a crafting window listing every weapon, tool, shield and piece of armor in the player's inventory.

Battle and Protection Idols

The forge runs on two families of idols. Battle Idols refine weapons, tools and magic staves; Protection Idols refine armor, capes and shields. Each comes in eight materials that follow the biome ladder, sixteen idols in all (Game8: List of All Idols):

Tier Idols Biome Found in
1 Wooden Meadows chests in abandoned houses and ship settings
2 Bronze Black Forest chests in ruins, Burial Chambers and Troll Caves
3 Iron Swamp chests in ruins, graves and Sunken Crypts
4 Silver Mountain chests in Mountain caves and abandoned log cabins
5 Black Metal Plains tower and ruin chests, Fuling trash piles
6 Black Marble Mistlands Dvergr treasure chests and ruined Dvergr towers
7 Flametal Mistlands, Ashlands, Deep North chests and containers
8 Bloodgold Deep North Mörkhalla, villages and ship settings

Which idol an item needs follows the material it is made from: gear built from a biome's signature resource takes that biome's idol, so an iron helmet needs an Iron Protection Idol, and the forge shows the requirement for each item. There are exceptions; the Early Axes, a Meadows weapon, take Iron idols (Game Rant).

Idols are rare. They turn up now and then in ordinary containers, roughly matched to the biome whose material they carry. Jade PG found Wooden and Bronze idols in the Meadows and Black Forest and Flametal and Bloodgold ones in the Deep North; Kysen's guide pulls a Flametal Protection Idol from a Jotun chest in the Gates of Mörkhalla and warns that many chests must be searched for each one.

Refinement

To use the forge, a player picks an item from the list and presses Attempt Refinement. A long animation plays before the result, and canceling during the animation costs nothing, which leaves time to reconsider. Once the attempt resolves, the idol is gone whatever the outcome (Game Rant).

A success raises the item one quality level with no metal cost and no station upgrade. Jade PG measured about five extra damage per level on weapons and around two points on some armor pieces, and every level also raises durability; staves gain elemental damage and shields gain block power and force. The forge accepts every weapon and tool, but not the clothing sold by Hildir or trinkets (Combat). According to the YouTuber Anshostin, items refined past their normal limit begin to glow, first red, then yellow, then green, brighter with each level.

Failure and item loss

A failed attempt destroys the item and returns only part of its basic crafting materials; the idol and every upgrade already paid for are lost (Game8). Jade PG broke a Black Metal Axe on its way to quality 9 and got back 21 of the 70 black metal it had cost. Iron Gate has not published the odds, and Jade reports that the developers declined to explain the calculation. Guides have settled on 35 percent an attempt; an early one gave 35 to 50 (Power Up Gaming). Timesaver.gg, citing a community audit of the Patch 1.0.20 game files, puts the return at 35 percent, rounded up, of the base cost plus the current level's upgrade cost, with levels above 4 counted as half a level (Timesaver.gg).

One item cannot be lost outright. Dyrnwyn, the Ashlands sword assembled from three fragments of which each world holds only one set, hands its fragments back when it breaks, so it can be crafted again (Weapons and Shields). Because the ordinary upgrades to quality 4 are guaranteed, guides recommend finishing them at the regular station before gambling at the forge.

The odds and how many idols it takes

Each attempt is one roll: about 65 percent success, about 35 percent destruction. Timesaver.gg reports that the odds do not change with item level, skill, station level or earlier failures, and that the game files contain a downgrade path the idols do not use, so a failure never just drops a level (Timesaver.gg). SnazzyGames gives the same 35 percent as "what I understand" it to be. Iron Gate has not confirmed any of it. Since each win has to follow the last, the chance of carrying one item all the way falls fast:

From quality 4 to Wins in a row Chance one item survives Average idols, restarting on a spare
5 1 65% 1.5
6 2 42% 3.9
7 3 27% 7.5
8 4 18% 13.1
9 5 12% 21.7
10 6 7.5% 35.0

This is Vi.ki's arithmetic from the 65 percent figure, and it matches Timesaver.gg's averages for every level it lists. Those averages hide a long tail: for quality 10 the median is 26 idols, and about one player in ten needs 75 or more. Deep North gear starts a level lower, so reaching quality 10 takes seven wins (4.9 percent) and about 55 idols.

What is worth refining

Gains differ widely, which decides where scarce idols should go. These figures are a community datamine reported by Timesaver.gg on Patch 1.0.20, not numbers from Iron Gate (Timesaver.gg):

Item Gain per level Idol
Staff of the Wild +40 (20 blunt, 20 poison), projectile only; vines scale with skill Flametal Battle
Nord Bow +20 (8 pierce, 12 spirit) Bloodgold Battle
Frostfire Bow +19 Bloodgold Battle
Thunderblood Knucklechains +13 Bloodgold Battle
Mistwalker +11 (frost and spirit) Black Marble Battle
Spinesnap +9 Black Marble Battle
Frostner +6 Silver Battle
Krom +6 Black Marble Battle
Arbalest, Ripper +3 Black Marble and Flametal Battle
Fenris armor, Breastplate of the Protector +2 armor Silver and Bloodgold Protection

Timesaver.gg ranks the Nord Bow first, then the Frostfire Bow and Thunderblood Knucklechains; calls the Mistwalker a cheap item to test on; and rates most armor, the Krom, Arbalest and Ripper poor value. Its advice is to stop at one or two levels on anything hard to replace, refine a spare copy rather than the original, and back up saves first. Finish any essence conversion before forging, because conversion resets a weapon's level (Frostfire and Thunderblood Weapons). Mages should see Mage Build Guide.

How high it goes

No maximum has been announced. Game8 reached quality 10 in testing without finding a limit, Jade PG stopped at 10, and Games Horizon reports players at 17 (Game8; Games Horizon). Anshostin, who says he raised the issue with the developers during playtesting, showed Carapace leggings at level 52 giving 134 armor and more than 11,000 durability, a Spinesnap bow at level 20 whose spirit damage had scaled with it, and a Flametal shield at level 45 that blocked the Deep North boss, Kall Fimbulbringer, on very hard difficulty without being staggered.

He argues that the system unbalances the game: stamina costs do not rise with level, a Club refined with Meadows idols can reach the damage of Deep North weapons, and the fixed number of idols in a world invites hoarding on community servers. He had proposed a cap at quality 10, or a rule that each tier of idol can be used only a few times on an item before the next tier is needed.

Save-scumming, fixes and console commands

Because the outcome is chance, a failure can be undone by restoring an automatic backup of the character from the Manage Saves screen, which Anshostin used to reach his levels; each level takes slightly longer to refine. Iron Gate's first post-launch hotfix included a single forge fix: on Steam, Hotfix 1.0.12 of Sep 11, 2026 stopped it from unlocking recipes that should not have been unlocked, with the other platforms promised the same fix shortly afterwards (Iron Gate). The second forge fix came with Patch 1.0.20 on Oct 15, 2026, whose notes say only "Fixed a possible exploit to Forge of Potential"; Iron Gate did not describe the exploit. (Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.20). The notes of Patch 1.0.21 of Oct 28 add nothing further on the forge or its odds. Timesaver.gg's audit also reports that since 1.0.20 the result comes from a saved random sequence per player, item type and target level; Iron Gate has not documented this, and if it is right, restoring a backup may no longer change an outcome (Timesaver.gg). Every post-launch change is on Patches Since 1.0.

The developer console can spawn a forge at home, spawn idols by tier and find or teleport to the world's own forge. Using devcommands blocks achievements, although the same hotfix added an opt-in for players who want them back. Items made with cheats carry a "cheated" flag; Patch 1.0.20 reset that flag on every item and build piece from earlier versions, because a bug in the first 1.0 release had also marked some honestly obtained items (Iron Gate). See Console Commands, Cheats and Mods.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Forge of Potential in Valheim? In the Mountain, and in no other biome. A world has ten possible sites and whichever one a player reaches first becomes the forge for that world; coming within about 300 meters reveals it on the map with a ward-like icon.

What are Battle and Protection Idols for? Battle Idols refine weapons, tools and magic staves; Protection Idols refine armor, capes and shields. Each family comes in eight materials that follow the biome ladder, and an item generally needs the idol matching the material it is made from, so an iron helmet takes an Iron Protection Idol.

Can the Forge of Potential destroy your gear? Yes. A failed attempt destroys the item and returns only part of its basic crafting materials, with the idol and every upgrade already paid for lost. The exception is Dyrnwyn, which hands its three fragments back so it can be crafted again.

How high can the Forge of Potential upgrade an item? No maximum has been announced. Game8 reached quality 10 in testing, Games Horizon reports players at 17, and Anshostin showed Carapace leggings at level 52 giving 134 armor and more than 11,000 durability.

Did Iron Gate patch the Forge of Potential? Twice: Hotfix 1.0.12 (Sep 11, 2026) stopped it unlocking recipes that should stay locked, and Patch 1.0.20 (Oct 15, 2026) fixed an exploit that Iron Gate did not describe.

What are the odds at the Forge of Potential? Guides put them at about 65 percent success and 35 percent destruction an attempt, unchanged by level or skill. Iron Gate has not published them.

How many idols does it take to reach quality 10? About 35 on average from quality 4, restarting on a spare after each break, with a median of 26. One item has only a 7.5 percent chance of surviving all six attempts.

What should you upgrade at the Forge of Potential? Timesaver.gg ranks the Nord Bow first, at +20 damage a level, then the Frostfire Bow and Thunderblood Knucklechains. Most armor gains only +2 a level, and tools gain only durability.

Can you use the Forge of Potential on an old world? Yes, but only where the map is blank. On worlds created before 1.0 the forge can generate only in mountains nobody has explored, one reason Iron Gate advised starting a fresh world for the release.
