Ocean
The Ocean is the sea that separates every other biome of Valheim. It holds Serpents, island-sized Leviathans and deep-water fish, turns boiling around the Ashlands and frozen at the Deep North, and was left unchanged by the 1.0 release.
The Ocean is the water between the landmasses of Valheim. It counts as one of the game's biomes and shows its own name on the minimap, but it has no ground to build on and only a handful of things living in it. Every other biome is reached across it, nearly always by boat, since swimming far from shore drains stamina until the Viking drowns (Valheim Wiki). The vessels themselves, from the raft to the Drakkar, are covered on Sailing and Ships.
Quick facts
| What it is | The sea between every other biome; it counts as a biome and names itself on the minimap |
| Building | None: the Ocean has no ground to build on |
| Hostile creature | The Serpent (400 health, 70 slash bite), and the Bonemaw (1,100 health) in the boiling water of the Ashlands |
| Passive creature | The Leviathan, an island-sized creature mined through its Abyssal Barnacles for Chitin |
| Fish | Tuna, Coral Cod, Pufferfish and, off the Deep North, Northern Salmon |
| Waves | About 0.5 m on a clear day, 2 m in rain, 3 m in a thunderstorm, with 5 m peaks |
| Edges of the world | Boiling around the Ashlands, frozen at the Deep North, and a drop into nothing at the rim |
| Changed at 1.0 | No: Iron Gate's FAQ confirmed nothing specifically focused on the Oceans |
Geography
The world is a flat disc with the spawn point near its center: the Meadows and Black Forest lie near the middle, the Mountain and Mistlands further out, the Ashlands at the far south and the Deep North at the far north, all separated by sea. At the edge of the world the sea drops into nothing, and a ship that sails over it is lost with its crew (Screen Rant). See World Map, Generation and Seeds.
Wood and meat float; nails, ore, scales and most trophies sink and are recoverable only in the shallows. A destroyed ship leaves its cargo in floating crates and a drowned Viking a floating headstone (Valheim Wiki; see Death and Corpse Runs).
Serpents
The Serpent is the Ocean's only hostile creature. It spawns only in zones that are entirely open sea, at least five meters deep, and only at night or in rain and thunderstorms: each condition gives a 5% chance per 64-meter zone, 10% when a storm falls at night, with a cooldown of 16 minutes 40 seconds per zone. A Serpent that spawned at night vanishes at dawn; one that spawned in a storm stays (Valheim Wiki). Those are exactly the conditions most players avoid, so many Vikings meet their first Serpent by accident, in the dark, on a raft.
It has 400 health and bites for 70 slash damage every ten seconds, enough to sink a raft. It is weak to frost, resistant to poison and immune to fire, spirit and stagger, so the answer is a bow, ideally with frost arrows; a full-health longship can simply outlast one while its crew shoots. See Bows, Crossbows and Arrows.
| Serpent | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 400 |
| Bite | 70 slash, every 10 s |
| Weak / resistant / immune | frost ×1.5 / poison ×0.5 / fire, spirit, stagger |
| Drops | 6–7 Serpent meat (floats), 8–10 Serpent scales (sink), Serpent trophy 33% (sinks) |
| Spawns | full-Ocean zones ≥ 5 m deep, at night or in rain and thunderstorms |
Only the meat floats. The scales and trophy sink and are lost in anything deeper than about two meters, so hunters either kite the creature into the shallows or leave it one arrow from death and jump onto its head while firing, so that the drops land in the player's hands.
The reliable method is the Abyssal Harpoon. Thrown at a Serpent, it tethers the creature to the player, who steers to shore at the slowest speed setting (a longship any faster snaps the line) and finishes it on the sand. The harpoon drains stamina for as long as the catch struggles (Valheim Wiki).
The reward is some of the best food of the middle game. Serpent meat cooked on an iron cooking station gives 70 health, 23 stamina and 3 health per tick for 25 minutes; with a mushroom and two honey at a level-two cauldron it becomes Serpent Stew, worth 80 health, 26 stamina and 4 health per tick for 30 minutes (Valheim Wiki; see Food and Cooking). The trophy cooked with fishing bait makes Heavy Fishing Bait.
Eight scales, ten fine wood and four iron at a level-three forge make the Serpent Scale Shield, a tower shield (no parry) with 60 block armor, a 10% movement penalty and one rare property: it resists pierce damage while blocking (Valheim Wiki; see Weapons and Shields).
Leviathans and chitin
The Leviathan is the Ocean's other inhabitant: a passive, rock-backed creature so large that it passes for a small island. Leviathans are placed when the world is generated, with a 1% chance per fully oceanic zone in water at least 30 meters deep, and never respawn. Each Abyssal Barnacle on the back gives 3–4 Chitin to any pickaxe, but every strike has a 10% chance of disturbing the creature, which howls, waits twenty seconds and then sinks for good over about 25 more (Valheim Wiki).
Chitin makes two items at a level-two workbench. The Abyssal Razor (4 fine wood, 20 chitin, 2 leather scraps) is a knife with 20 slash, 20 pierce and a six-times backstab, iron-tier damage without any ore. The Abyssal Harpoon (8 fine wood, 30 chitin, 3 leather scraps) also latches onto any non-boss land creature, a common way to walk a boar into a pen (Valheim Wiki; see Materials and Resources). Once a world's Leviathans are mined out, the only further chitin comes from the Coral Cod.
Fish
Three of the game's twelve fish live in the open sea, each needing its own bait and each carrying a bonus drop (Valheim Wiki). The rod and basic bait are sold by Haldor; see Fishing.
| Fish | Water | Bait | Bonus drops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuna | Ocean, deep | Heavy (Serpent trophy) | Tin ore, Ruby |
| Coral Cod | Ocean, deep | Heavy (Serpent trophy) | Chitin, Onion seeds |
| Pufferfish | Ocean, very deep; Mistlands shores | Misty (Lox trophy) | Sap, Ooze |
| Northern Salmon | Deep North shores | Frosty (Drake trophy) | Carrot seeds, Silver |
Weather and waves
The Ocean has the same weather as the land but nowhere to hide from it. Night and fog cut visibility to a few boat-lengths, and rain raises the sea: waves average half a meter on a clear day, two meters in rain and three meters in a thunderstorm, with five-meter peaks (Valheim Wiki). Storms hide the rocks and sandbars on which most ships are lost, so experienced sailors drop to the oar setting or wait. Anyone in the water or on deck in the rain is Wet: health regeneration falls by a quarter, stamina regeneration by 15%, and the Viking is weak to frost and lightning for two minutes after the last soaking (Valheim Wiki; see Weather, Cold and Wet).
Sailing and the wind
Crossing the Ocean means reading the wind. An arrow beside the minimap shows its direction and the ship's dial shows whether the sail is catching it; a boat is fastest with the wind dead astern, and against the wind the oar setting beats a slack sail.
The wind can be commanded. Moder's Forsaken Power turns it to blow wherever the ship points; once a five-minute tailwind on demand, the Call to Arms Update of August 2025 made it "always tailwind" plus 300 carry weight, 10% movement speed and 50% frost resistance (Game Rant; see Forsaken Powers).
The boiling sea of the Ashlands
The Ocean changes character at the poles of the world. Around the Ashlands the water boils, drawn as a darker band on the map: a swimmer overheats within about half a minute and then takes 50 damage a second, and a raft, karve or longship takes up to 30 blunt damage a second the deeper it sails in. Only the Drakkar, built with ceramic plates unlocked by The Queen's Majestic Carapace, is immune (Valheim Wiki; Ashlands Update). These waters are patrolled by the Bonemaw, a larger Serpent with 1,100 health that bites for 140 slash and spits three fireballs every twenty seconds. It shares the Serpent's frost weakness and drops 6–7 Bonemaw meat and 8–9 teeth, which float, and a trophy, which sinks (Valheim Wiki; see Ashlands Creatures).
The frozen sea of the Deep North
At the opposite edge the sea is cold but not deadly: any boat can make the crossing, and the map still reads "Ocean" until the hull hits ice. Sheets of ice line the shore and can be walked on, though a running Viking slides on them and they crack in places (allthings.how; Valheim Wiki). The water is deep right up to the ice, so the cargo of a ship wrecked here is gone for good.
Ships smash through loose floes but not the solid sheets; an Ember Charge breaks the ice a ship cannot. Wrecked longships stand frozen into the shore ice, and Munin explains that earlier Vikings reached this coast and never found a way home. Seals haul out on the ice and Northern Salmon swim beneath it (Deep North Creatures); ice itself became a resource in 1.0, fed to the Frigid Kiln to make Liquid Frost (Deep North Update (1.0 Patch Notes)).
History and the decision not to update it
The Ocean has been the same since early access began on Feb 2, 2021, and the studio's first roadmap promised to change that: its third planned update, "Ships and the Sea", was to bring ship customization and "a more fleshed out ocean biome" (Game Informer). It never shipped as such; the Hearth & Home Update, Frost Caves Update and Mistlands Update took its place, and the Ashlands Update added the Drakkar and the Bonemaw. Asked in a June 2025 community Q&A whether the oceans would be improved, creative director Robin "Grimmcore" Eyre answered "maybe" (Development History).
The Valheim 1.0 Release settled the question for now. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ answered a direct question about the sea: "No, the 1.0 update focuses on the Deep North biome. There is some new content for the rest of Valheim as well, but nothing that is specifically focused on the Oceans" (Iron Gate 1.0 FAQ). PC Gamer reported the answer alongside the price rise to $29.99 and quoted a player's complaint about sailing hundreds of kilometers for "three things" (PC Gamer; games.gg). When 1.0 arrived on Sep 9, 2026 the Ocean's only changes were at its edges. Iron Gate Studio has committed post-launch to bug fixes and quality-of-life work, says there will be no Valheim 2, and wants to keep adding to the game (PCGamesN); whether the Ocean ever gets its update remains, in the studio's own word, "maybe".
Frequently asked questions
What lives in the Ocean in Valheim? The Serpent, the only hostile creature of the open sea; the passive, island-sized Leviathan; and three deep-water fish, Tuna, Coral Cod and Pufferfish. The Bonemaw, a larger Serpent, patrols the boiling water around the Ashlands, and Northern Salmon swim beneath the ice of the Deep North.
How do you kill a Serpent? With a bow, ideally frost arrows: it is weak to frost, resistant to poison and immune to fire, spirit and stagger, and a full-health longship can outlast one while its crew shoots. The Abyssal Harpoon is the reliable method, tethering the creature so it can be towed to shore at the slowest speed setting and finished on the sand.
Why do Serpent drops disappear? Because only the meat floats. The scales and the trophy sink and are lost in anything deeper than about two meters, so hunters either kite the Serpent into the shallows or leave it one arrow from death and jump onto its head while firing.
When do Serpents spawn? Only in zones that are entirely open sea and at least five meters deep, and only at night or in rain and thunderstorms: 5% per 64-meter zone for each condition, 10% when a storm falls at night. One that spawned at night vanishes at dawn; one that spawned in a storm stays.
Did Valheim 1.0 change the Ocean? No. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ said the update focused on the Deep North and that nothing was specifically focused on the Oceans. The only changes were at the edges: the frozen sea of the Deep North, and ice as a resource for the Frigid Kiln.

ValheimValheim is an open-world survival game for one to ten players, developed by Iron Gate Studio and published by Coffee Stain Publishing. It entered Steam early access in February 2021 and reached its full 1.0 release on Sep 9, 2026. -
StaminaStamina is the yellow bar in Valheim that sprinting, jumping, swimming, attacking, blocking and dodging spend. It starts at 50, rises only with food, refills at 6 to 12 points a second, and is stretched by Rested, meads, skills, gear and Forsaken Powers. -
Sailing and ShipsValheim's four ships (Raft, Karve, Longship and Drakkar) with their recipes and stats, plus steering, wind and tacking, storms, rocks and Serpents, hauling ore, the boiling Ashlands sea and the ice of the Deep North. -
SerpentThe Serpent is the sea monster of Valheim's Ocean: 400 health and a 70-slash bite, rising only at night or in storms. Weak to frost, it is hunted from a ship with bows and the Abyssal Harpoon for meat, scales and a trophy. The Ashlands' Bonemaw Serpent is its bigger kin. -
AshlandsThe Ashlands is Valheim's eighth biome, a lava-scarred crescent of land at the southern edge of the world, added in May 2024. It is home to the Charred, their besiegeable fortresses, the Flametal metal, gem-augmented weapons and the seventh boss, Fader. -
Deep NorthThe Deep North is Valheim's ninth and final biome, a frozen land beyond the Ocean added by the 1.0 release on Sep 9, 2026. Snowstorms, deep snow and cracking ice guard two dungeons, the Jotun Invasion loop and the Aesir Passage that leads to the last boss.
