Health
Health is Valheim's red bar: 25 points at base, raised only by food, restored every ten seconds by each food's healing value and faster when Rested, and worn down by damage that armor, resistances and blocking reduce. It also sizes the stagger bar.
Health is the red bar at the bottom left of the Valheim screen that measures how much damage a Viking can take before dying: 25 points at base, raised by food and restored over time by the healing each eaten food provides. There is no hunger, but a character who has not eaten keeps those 25 points and heals one point every ten seconds, as Embr's food guide puts it (Health, Valheim Wiki). Maximum health also decides how hard a Viking is to stagger and how big a hit a shield can hold, which makes it the defensive half of every meal, with Stamina and, for mages, Eitr as the others.

How to increase max health
Food is the only way to raise the maximum. Each food adds its health value while it lasts, fading as it digests, and three different foods can be active at once; health dishes carry a red fork and are mostly meat (Food and Cooking). Lucky Ghost's 1.0 starter guide shows the scale: one cooked boar meat adds 30 health, more than doubling a new character's 25. At the top end the Deep North dishes Seal Meat Soup and Meat in Bread give 110 each and Smoked Moose Meat 105, a total of 350 against 325 for the best Ashlands trio of Piquant pie, Mashed meat and Fiery svinstew (Food, Valheim Wiki; BisectHosting).
Embr's rule for choosing is stamina foods for exploring and gathering, health foods for dungeons and bosses. Eating does not fill the bar at once, so guides say to eat before summoning a boss rather than during the fight. Trinkets heal without raising the maximum: the Iron Brooch restores 50 health when its adrenaline fills, and the Bracelets of the Brave, Brimstone and 1.0's Neckstabber 100 (Brimstone, Valheim Wiki; Combat).
How health regeneration works
Health returns in ticks every ten seconds. Each active food adds its healing value, from 1 point for berries to 6 for Ashlands pies, and the total is multiplied by status effects, with positive effects adding together and negative ones multiplying (Health, Valheim Wiki). Three strong foods restore about 18 points a tick, and being Rested lifts that by half; Embr adds meads and staying dry and warm as the other ways to heal faster (Rested, Comfort and Sleeping; Weather, Cold and Wet).
| Modifier | Health regeneration |
|---|---|
| Resting, by a fire while sitting or sheltered | +200% |
| Rested | +50% |
| The Elder's power; Bear set (Berserk) | +30% |
| Heart of the Forest surge; Lingering Healing Mead | +25% |
| Vilebone set; Neckstabber surge (1.0) | +20% |
| Vanguard set and Witch Crown surge (1.0) | +10% |
| Wet | ×0.75 |
| Cold; Tasty Mead | ×0.5 |
| Freezing | ×0, and 1 damage a second |
| Feeling sick, from Bukeperries or rotten meat | none for 15 seconds |
Healing meads work alongside: the Minor, Medium and Major Healing Meads restore 50, 75 and 125 health over ten seconds on a shared two-minute cooldown (Mead and Potions).
How damage reduces health
Incoming damage passes three filters: a block or parry if one is raised, the Viking's resistance to that damage type, and armor. Armor subtracts its full value from any hit more than twice its size; once armor reaches half the hit, the loss becomes damage² ÷ (4 × armor), so an 80-point blow costs 50 health against 30 armor and 32 against 50 (Damage mechanics, Valheim Wiki). MalinaPlays puts it simply: armor only trims what leaks through, while food raises the ceiling before anything leaks (Armor and Capes).
Two settings scale the numbers. Each extra player within 200 meters makes enemies hit 4 percent harder, and the Combat setting of the World Modifiers sets enemy damage from 50 percent on Very Easy to 200 percent on Very Hard (World Modifiers, Valheim Wiki).
Health and the stagger bar
The stagger bar beside the character fills with the physical and lightning damage a Viking takes or blocks, holds 40 percent of maximum health and drains a fifth of that each second; when it overflows the Viking is stunned for about 1.2 seconds (Stagger, Valheim Wiki). SnazzyGames counts this as the hidden half of eating for health. It also caps blocking: a 350-health Viking can absorb 140 points of stagger before a block breaks, a 100-health one only 40 (Parrying and Blocking).
Damage that armor cannot stop
Pure damage ignores armor and resistance. Falls from more than 4 meters cost 6.25 health per extra meter, capped at 100, so SnazzyGames keeps more than 100 health when building high; the Feather cape removes fall damage. Smoke costs 2 health a second, a drowning Viking loses 5 percent of maximum health a second, and the boiling sea of the Ashlands 50 a second once heat builds up (Damage and Ashlands, Valheim Wiki). Burning and poison ticks are pure too, although armor shrinks the hit that starts them (Status Effects).
Falling trees are the classic early killer: SnazzyGames has seen a trunk hit for anything from 5 to more than 60 pure damage, and rolling logs hurt more on slopes, enough to kill a Viking with the base 25 (Meadows).
Death and invulnerability
At zero health a Viking dies, leaves a tombstone holding the inventory and loses a share of every skill (Death and Corpse Runs; Skills). Brief invulnerability comes from the middle of a dodge roll, passing through a portal, entering or leaving a dungeon, sleeping and cutscenes (Health, Valheim Wiki). Creatures regenerate slowly on their own, about a tenth of their health every six minutes.
History
Health's present role dates from the Hearth & Home Update of September 2021. Iron Gate's spotlight that August explained that food would split into health and stamina dishes, that tanks would need health food because blocking would depend on maximum health, and that health would size a new stagger bar (MMORPG.com). The Call to Arms Update of 2025 gave The Elder's power its regeneration bonus and added healing trinkets; the Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026 raised the ceiling with 110-health Deep North dishes and the Neckstabber.
Frequently asked questions
How do you increase max health in Valheim? Eat red-fork health foods; each adds its health value to the base 25, three at a time. In 1.0, Seal Meat Soup, Meat in Bread and Smoked Moose Meat reach 350.
How do you heal faster in Valheim? Eat foods with high healing values, rest by a fire (+200%) or get Rested (+50%), stay dry and warm, and drink healing meads.
Why is my health not regenerating? Freezing stops regeneration completely and deals 1 damage a second; Bukeperries stop it for 15 seconds; with no food a Viking heals only one point every ten seconds.
Does armor increase health? No. Armor reduces each hit, and only food raises the maximum.
