Valheim 1.0: The Deep North out forSince Sep 9, 2026

Furniture and Decoration

The furnishings of a Valheim base: comfort seats, tables, beds, rugs and banners, the chests from the wooden Chest to the 1.0 Wardrobe, torches and lanterns, item and armor stands for trophies, material stacks, the Deep North furniture and the 2026 garlands.

Furniture and decoration are the build pieces that serve the people inside a Valheim base rather than its structure. They are placed with the Hammer like walls and roofs, mostly within range of an ordinary Workbench (Building and Structural Integrity), and they do three jobs: seats, tables, beds, rugs and banners raise the Comfort that sets how long the Rested buff lasts; chests hold what a Viking cannot carry; and lights push back the dark. Beyond that, trophies on stands, stacks of metal bars and strings of flowers turn a shelter into a home. Every major update has added to the catalog, most recently the carved Timberwood furniture, Wardrobe and Grausten Chest of the Valheim 1.0 Release and the garlands of the February 2026 anniversary patch.

Comfort furniture

Most furniture belongs to a comfort group. Within ten meters of the player only the best piece of each group counts, so a room gains from variety rather than repetition; the rules are set out on Rested, Comfort and Sleeping. Thrones are worth 3, chairs 2, and stools and benches 1; large tables and rugs 2, small ones 1. EmmaTpotato's tests of the 1.0 build found that the Deep North pieces follow the same pattern, and that item stands, armor stands, Ashlands clay pots and the 2026 garlands now count too.

Group 1 comfort 2 comfort 3 comfort
Seats Stool, Wood Bench, Carved Bench Wood Chair, Darkwood Chair, Carved Chair Raven, Stone, Black Marble, Bone and Antler Thrones
Tables Table, Black Marble Table, Square Carved Table Round Table, Long Heavy Table, Long Carved Table None
Rugs Deer, Hare, Asksvin and Sealskin Rugs, jute carpets Wolf, Lox and Bearskin Rugs, Moose Hide Carpet None
Beds Bed, Ashwood Bed Dragon Bed None
Banners dyed banners jute curtains None

Banners take 6 Leather Scraps and 2 Fine Wood plus a dye, from Coal and Blueberries to a Bloodbag or Guck, in eleven colors and stripes. Rugs take four hides of their animal, from Deer Hide to Moose Hide. Only one rug counts for comfort, but builders overlap them, Lox rugs above all, to carpet whole rooms.

Chests and storage

Chests keep items indefinitely and are the usual way to hold spare gear beside a bed or portal. The Black Metal Chest of the Hearth & Home Update is the largest with a documented size. Version 1.0 added two big containers: the Grausten Chest, built from Ashlands stone and the skulls of Charred Warriors, and the Wardrobe, a Timberwood cupboard. Launch coverage called both "massive", but as of Sep 11, 2026 no source gave their capacity.

Container Materials Slots
Chest 10 Wood 10 (5×2)
Barrel 10 Wood, 1 Barrel Hoops bought from Haldor 12 (6×2)
Personal Chest 10 Fine Wood, 8 Iron 6 (3×2), opens only for its owner
Reinforced Chest 10 Fine Wood, 2 Iron 24 (6×4)
Black Metal Chest 10 Wood, 2 Tar, 6 Black Metal 32 (8×4)
Grausten Chest 10 Grausten, 5 Charred Warrior Trophy, 2 Flametal not documented
Wardrobe 10 Timberwood, 2 Tar, 6 Black Metal not documented

Since 1.0 materials can also be kept in the open. Every metal bar, Flint, Obsidian and Timberwood can be placed as a stack or pile, 30 bars to a metal stack and 50 of the others, as decoration or simply to free chest space. Wood, stone, coal, bone and coins had such stacks before (Materials and Resources).

Lighting

Light matters in a game of dark nights and darker dungeons. Early torches and sconces burn Resin and must be refuelled, and braziers also count as a fire for resting. The Deep North's Hooded Lantern, made from Timberwood and a Luminous Larva picked off the walls of the Winding Tunnels, throws a directional beam; Kysen lines the tunnels with them pointing back to the entrance, so that their light shows the way out.

Light Materials Notes
Standing Wood Torch 2 Wood, 2 Resin burns Resin
Sconce 2 Wood, 2 Copper, 2 Resin wall torch; 6 Resin last about 33 hours
Standing Iron Torch 2 Iron, 2 Resin Guck or Greydwarf Eyes give green or blue flames
Hanging and Standing Brazier 5 Bronze, 2 Coal, a Chain or 3 Wolf Claws a fire for resting; 1 comfort
Lava Lantern 1 Flametal, 1 Proustite Powder, 1 Sulfur Stone Ashlands; 2 comfort
Hooded Lantern 3 Timberwood, 1 Luminous Larva 1.0; directional beam
Snow Lantern 8 Snowballs 1.0; 2 comfort
Fey Lights 2 Fine Wood, 1 Thistle 2026; 1 comfort

The Snow Lantern, built from eight Snowballs, survives only in cold biomes such as the Mountain and the Deep North; placed anywhere warmer, it destroys itself.

Stands and trophies

Item stands (4 Fine Wood, 1 Bronze Nails), in wall and floor versions, display a single object: a trophy, weapon, shield, tool, food, bomb or egg (Valheim Wiki: Item stand). Hanging retired weapons and spare meads on the walls, and marking chests with a stand that shows their contents, are staples of decorating guides. The Armor Stand (8 Fine Wood, 4 Iron Nails, 2 Leather Scraps) holds a full outfit with weapon and shield. Version 1.0 added trophies for its new creatures, from the Seal and Moose to the Hexen and Krigen, and for the Frost and Lava Blobs (Deep North Creatures).

Stands briefly became a risk at launch. Steam hotfix 1.0.12 of Sep 11, 2026 stopped stands resetting the durability and upgrade level of what they held when an older world was first opened in 1.0; for worlds already opened, Iron Gate was still working on a fix and advised backing up before taking high-level items down (Iron Gate).

Rocky, the pet rock added on Apr 1, 2025, is the oddest display piece: finding a Mysterious Rock in the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp or Mountain teaches its recipe, and the placed rock changes expression, holds an item like a stand and, paired with another, slowly produces Stone (SnazzyGames; Iron Gate).

Working pieces double as decoration. Station extensions stay in place after their station is removed, so anvils and a forge cooler can dress a smithy, and meat left on a cooking station after its fire is taken away hangs there like a drying rack (Crafting Stations and Upgrades).

Deep North furniture

Timberwood, the dense wood of the Deep North, brought a new furniture set that Iron Gate described as chunkier than earlier pieces, with designs carved into the chair and tables, together with two rugs from the biome's animals and the two large storage pieces above (Iron Gate).

Piece Materials Comfort
Antler Throne 15 Timberwood, 5 Moose Hide, 1 Moose Trophy 3
Carved Chair 4 Timberwood, 1 Moose Sinew 2
Carved Bench 6 Timberwood, 1 Moose Hide 1
Long Carved Table 20 Timberwood, 2 Tar, 20 Iron Nails 2
Square Carved Table 6 Timberwood, 1 Tar, 6 Iron Nails 1
Moose Hide Carpet 4 Moose Hide 2
Sealskin Rug 4 Seal Pelt 1
Birds' Nest 2 Writhan Roots, 3 Acorns, 5 Thistle None

The biome's largest ornament is not built at all. Gammeltrolls, the aged trolls of the north, turn to stone when killed, and the petrified body can be left standing as a monument or built upon instead of being blasted apart for Petrified Tissue (KeenGamer; Metals and Smelting).

The Birds' Nest, unlocked by the roots of the Writhan, a new creature of the Swamp, hangs from a wall or tree and fills with up to four Feathers over time like a beehive, the first way to farm feathers (Farming and Taming).

Garlands and seasonal pieces

The fifth-anniversary patch of Feb 2, 2026 (0.221.10) added the first year-round garlands: the Flower Garland (2 Fine Wood, 1 Dandelion) and Fey Lights, a string of small lights (GamingOnLinux). In 1.0 each is worth one comfort, though the two share a comfort group. The Maypole and Yule Tree remain craftable only during Iron Gate's midsummer and midwinter events, but once placed they stay all year.

History

The first chest, bed, chairs, tables, rugs and banners date from the early-access launch of February 2021. The Hearth & Home Update of Sep 16, 2021 added the Black Metal Chest, the Darkwood Chair, a two-seat sitting log, the Stone Throne, the Round and Long Heavy Tables, the Hot Tub and decorative coin piles.

The Mistlands Update brought black-marble furniture and Dvergr lanterns; the Ashlands Update the Bone Throne, Asksvin Rug, Ashwood bed and bench, bone stacks, clay pots and the Lava Lantern; the Call to Arms Update the Bearskin Rug; and 1.0 the Deep North pieces, the material stacks and a rebuilt hammer menu with search and favorites (Deep North Update (1.0 Patch Notes)).
