Fuling

The Fulings of Valheim's Plains, the goblin people who worship Yagluth: Fuling warriors, Shamans and Berserkers with health, weapons and drops such as Black Metal Scrap and Fuling Totems, where they live, how to raid a village, the horde raid and 1.0's Jotun invasions.

The Fuling is a hostile goblin-like humanoid of the Plains in Valheim: small, green-skinned, long-eared and very fast, it lives in Fuling Villages, cackles as it fights and worships the dead king Yagluth. The game files call it simply "Goblin". It comes in three kinds, the ordinary Fuling warrior, the spell-casting Fuling Shaman and the troll-sized Fuling Berserker, and between them they guard the Plains' treasures: Black Metal Scrap, which no deposit yields, the barley and flax of their fields, and the Fuling Totems that summon Yagluth. The Plains bestiary is on Plains Creatures; this page covers the Fulings in depth.

Fuling types

The ordinary Fuling spawns with one of four weapons: a club (a third of them) or a sword (another third) for 85 blunt or slash, a spear thrown for 85 pierce from up to fourteen meters, or a torch for 45 blunt and 45 fire that sets the target burning. A third also carry a purely cosmetic wooden shield. Fulings circle their target, then dart in for three quick blows or a throw, and they hear unusually well, so felling a tree or mining near a village draws them. They swim badly and often fail to notice a ditch until they fall in (Fuling, Valheim Wiki).

Type Health (0/1/2 stars) Attacks Main drops (0 stars)
Fuling 175 / 350 / 525 Club, sword or spear 85; torch 45 + 45 fire 1 Black Metal Scrap, 5-9 Coins (25%), trophy 10%
Fuling Shaman 100 Fireball 20 + 100 fire; staff poke 100; shield 1 Black Metal Scrap, 1 Bukeperries, 20-39 Coins (25%), trophy 10%
Fuling Berserker 800 / 1,600 / 2,400 Club 130 blunt, 100 chop; triple slam 130 each 3-4 Black Metal Scrap, 5-19 Coins, Fuling Totem 10%, trophy 5%

Starred fulings and berserkers drop double and quadruple scrap (Fuling, Fuling Shaman and Fuling Berserker, Valheim Wiki).

The Shaman is the first target in any fight. It opens by casting a barrier on every ally within six meters that absorbs 100 damage or lasts 40 seconds, then lobs fireballs every three seconds at anyone within twenty meters; JP Valheim estimates that a shaman shielding eight fulings effectively triples their health. Enough damage breaks a shield, and the moment a shaman raises its staff to recast is the moment to rush it.

The Berserker, as big as a troll, swings its club in a four-meter arc every two seconds, sometimes with a slight delay, and every twenty seconds roars and brings it down three times in a row, stepping forward with each slam. Every blow can be parried, but a missed parry on the triple slam is usually fatal (Aggressive creature strategies, Valheim Wiki). Old School Game Snob found its charge slow enough to shoot it down while backing away.

Where Fulings live

Fuling Villages range from a couple of fenced fields to something close to a town of hide-and-bone huts, watchtowers and large bonfires visible at night. They hold patches of ripe barley and flax, Plains chests and, beside each bonfire, a 50% chance of a Fuling Totem on an altar (Fuling Village, Valheim Wiki). Fulings also garrison Fuling Outposts, stone towers whose restored variant always holds a totem, and Berserkers guard the Plains' Stonehenges (Fuling Outpost and Stonehenge, Valheim Wiki). Village spawns are placed once and do not return, but the open Plains keep producing fulings, two per area by day and five at night, and once Yagluth is dead groups of three roam most biomes after dark.

How to raid a Fuling village

The first step is to clear the deathsquitos flying around the village, which would otherwise join any fight, and to check that none are left. Fulings have no weakness except their modest health, and a crowd of them can kill a Viking in seconds, so the wiki recommends iron armor and weapons at the least.

The core tactic is to fight one fuling at a time. JP Valheim shoots a single fuling from a hilltop out of the village's sight, lets it come, and kills it with an Abyssal Razor; a third hit usually staggers a fuling, opening it to more. Shamans and the sentries in towers are shot first, and Berserkers are left for last.

Spear throwers are the real danger. Their spears fly fast and far, and a one- or two-star thrower can kill a player in light armor before melee begins, so they should be dropped at range or avoided.

Frost arrows are the best ammunition: they slow fulings almost to a halt, and fired from stealth with an upgraded Huntsman Bow or Draugr Fang, frost or Needle arrows can kill an unaware zero-star fuling in one shot. Ooze bombs work well on fulings that are chasing the player, and fulings wading through a river are easy targets (Aggressive creature strategies, Valheim Wiki; Bows, Crossbows and Arrows). In melee, a fully upgraded silver sword or crystal battleaxe staggers a zero-star fuling with one swing.

Fuling drops

Black Metal Scrap is the reason to raid. It weighs 10 per piece, cannot pass through a normal portal and smelts into Black Metal in a Blast Furnace, the metal of the Plains tier (Black Metal Scrap, Valheim Wiki; Metals and Smelting). Five Fuling Totems on Yagluth's altar summon the boss; besides Berserkers (10%), villages, restored outposts and, rarely, Stonehenge chests supply them (Fuling Totem, Valheim Wiki). The Fuling trophy makes Stingy fishing bait, which catches Grouper, and the Berserker trophy the Evasion Mantle, a trinket of 5 Black Metal and 10 Linen Thread that halves block stamina, adds 50% parry bonus and 20 Dodge for two minutes once 60 adrenaline is built (Bait and Evasion Mantle, Valheim Wiki; Fishing). Since the Valheim 1.0 Release rare enemy drops are rolled so that long unlucky streaks are less likely (Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!, Steam).

Fuling raids

After Moder dies, and until Yagluth does, "The horde is attacking!" can fall on a base in the Meadows, Black Forest or Plains for two minutes. Embr counts eight fulings, two Berserkers and a Shaman, arriving in staggered waves because each has only about a half chance of spawning every ten or twenty seconds; with no weaknesses to exploit, walls and ditches matter (Events, Valheim Wiki; Raids and Events). Returning Hildir's bronze chest from the Sealed Tower adds "They were bros, man.", in which Zil and Thungr arrive with a horde of starred fulings (Hildir's Dungeons).

Fulings and Yagluth

Runestones and the totems, whose crowned heads resemble Yagluth, show the Fulings as his worshipers, and the most dangerous of them, the shaman Zil and the berserker Thungr, guard the bottom of Hildir's Sealed Tower. The name is roughly Swedish for "ugly one", and unlike most of Valheim's creatures the Fuling comes from general fantasy rather than Norse myth (Fuling, Valheim Wiki). Iron Gate's development news traces them through the 2020 beta: small "Goblin camps" in August, Fuling villages and the Berserker in September, and the Shaman in October (Beta info and development news and Development news and new content, Steam).

Version 1.0 brought winter to them. When a Jotun invasion lands in the Plains, the land around it turns to snow, Fuling camps included, and the invaders fight the local creatures until the Malicious Ice at its center is destroyed (Deep North). Yagluth himself returns in the gauntlet of bosses before Kall Fimbulbringer.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tame a Fuling? No. Fulings are always hostile and cannot be tamed.

What are Fulings weak to? Nothing. They are neutral to every damage type except spirit, to which they are immune, so raw damage, frost arrows that slow them and fighting them one at a time are the answers.

How do I get Fuling Totems? From altars beside the bonfires of Fuling Villages, from restored Fuling Outposts, as a 10% drop from Fuling Berserkers, and rarely from Stonehenge chests. Five summon Yagluth.

Where do I get Black Metal in Valheim? From Fulings, which drop Black Metal Scrap, and from chests in the Plains; the scrap is smelted into Black Metal in a Blast Furnace.

Do Fulings respawn in villages? No. A village's inhabitants are placed once, but fulings keep spawning in the open Plains, so a cleared village is only safe for a while.
