The Bog Witch
The Swamp's Greydwarf trader, added in patch 0.219.13 on Oct 29, 2024: her hut and its dome, her sweeping broom, the potion ingredients and feast spices she sells, and the Cooking and Farming skills her update introduced.
The Bog Witch is the third trader in Valheim, found in a domed hut in the Swamp between 3,000 and 8,000 meters from the center of the map. She is a female Greydwarf with pale blue eyes who keeps a small wooden hut full of bottles and candles, with an ordinary Greydwarf sitting by the door and an animated broom sweeping the floor. She sells the ingredients for the game's second wave of potions and the spices needed for feasts, and her arrival in patch 0.219.13 on Oct 29, 2024 also brought three new skills, two crafting stations and the Scythe (Patch 0.219.13 – The Bog Witch, Iron Gate on Steam; Valheim Wiki: The Bog Witch). Like Haldor and Hildir she cannot be harmed, and her stock grows as the world's bosses fall. The full changelog is on The Bog Witch Update.

Finding her
The Bog Witch is placed by the same rule as the other two traders. When a world is generated, up to ten candidate sites are chosen for her, all inside Swamp biomes, each at least 1,000 meters from the others and all between 3,000 and 8,000 meters from the center of the map. The first candidate a player approaches becomes her permanent home and the rest are discarded, and a cauldron icon appears on the map when she is discovered (Valheim Wiki: The Bog Witch). The icon appears at a distance of roughly 300 meters, so the trader-hunting method that works for Haldor works for her too: sail along the coasts of Swamps in the middle band of the world and watch the map.
Because her band starts at 3,000 meters she is rarely in the first Swamp a new character finds, but she is within reach of a Karve, and guides recommend carrying portal materials so a distant hut can be linked to base at once (Portals). On worlds where every Swamp has already been explored she will not appear unless the genloc console command regenerates locations (Console Commands, Cheats and Mods).
The hut and the Kvastur
The hut is surrounded by a shimmering, transparent dome that no creature can cross and that cannot be destroyed, a safe retreat in a biome that is otherwise hostile day and night (Swamp Creatures). Inside, the hut counts as Comfort level 3, so a player can sit by her fire and pick up the Rested buff (Rested, Comfort and Sleeping). The broom sweeping the floor is a creature called the Kvastur. It is neutral: it shoves players out of its way, defends itself if attacked and fights monsters that come near the hut. It has 700 health, hits for 80 blunt, takes double damage from fire, and drops a Kvastur trophy, Wood and Resin; a new broom appears a minute later (Valheim Wiki: Kvastur). The trophy is purely decorative and does not sweep when placed at home.
What she sells
Almost everything on her table is an ingredient rather than a finished item: a spice that completes a feast, or a curious material that completes a potion. Only the Love Potion and the Serving Tray are usable as bought. Her stock unlocks in stages tied to the bosses, and Seafarer's Herbs appear only after a Serpent has been killed (Valheim Wiki: The Bog Witch).

She also buys valuables at Haldor's rates: Amber for 5 Coins, Amber Pearls for 10, Rubies for 20 and Silver Necklaces for 30, and since 1.0 the Deep North's loot as well: Ancient Coins for 10 each and the four gems from Jotun chests, Grimvarn for 55, Solryth for 95, Veydris for 135 and Draumyx for 175, so a Deep North haul can be sold in the Swamp without the trip to Haldor (Valheim Wiki: The Bog Witch, read Oct 27, 2026). The Corked Vial, the container for Blob bombs, joined her stock in a later patch (see Call to Arms Update). Her dialogue is entirely wordless: she answers with sounds such as "Hm..." and "Kgk."
Potions
Before her update every mead restored health, stamina or eitr or resisted an element. The eight potions of patch 0.219.13 do stranger things. Six need one of her ingredients plus ordinary materials, the Lightfoot Mead needs none, and the Love Potion is bought ready-made and cannot be brewed. Four ingredients are on sale from the first visit, so the Tonic of Ratatosk, Mead of Troll Endurance, Draught of Vananidir and Brew of Animal Whispers can be brewed as soon as the player has the fish, honey or berries their recipes also ask for; the Berserkir Mead and Anti-Sting Concoction wait for Moder (Mead and Potions).
| Potion | Her ingredient | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Tonic of Ratatosk | Cured Squirrel Hamstring | +15% movement speed, +10 Run skill |
| Mead of Troll Endurance | Powdered Dragon Eggshells | +250 carry weight |
| Draught of Vananidir | Fresh Seaweed | −80% swimming stamina use |
| Brew of Animal Whispers | Pungent Pebbles | Animals are tamed more readily |
| Berserkir Mead | Toadstool | −80% attack, block and dodge stamina; weak to slash, blunt and pierce |
| Anti-Sting Concoction | Fragrant Bundle | Deathsquitos leave the drinker alone |
| Lightfoot Mead | (none) | +20% jump height, −30% jump stamina; moved here from the Feather Cape |
| Love Potion | bought outright | Nearby Trolls show hearts and spawn stronger |
The same patch split the Cauldron's work three ways. Cooked dishes stay at the Cauldron; mead bases moved to the new Mead Ketill, built at a Forge from 4 Tin, 6 Copper and 2 Leather Scraps and hung over a lit fire; and uncooked foods, doughs, raw fish, bait and feasts moved to the Food Preparation Table, built at a Workbench from 5 Iron, 20 Fine Wood and 15 Leather Scraps (Valheim Wiki: Mead Ketill; Food Preparation Table; Crafting Stations and Upgrades). Bases still go into a Fermenter and still yield six meads, except the Berserkir base, which yields three.
The Love Potion's description, "All's fair in love and war", explains nothing, and players spent the first days of the public test trying to tame Trolls with it. It does not tame anything: while it is active nearby Trolls display hearts above their heads and keep attacking, and the wiki records its actual effect as increased Troll spawning, which makes it a Troll-hide farming tool rather than a romance (Valheim Wiki: The Bog Witch).
Feasts and the Serving Tray
A feast is a large dish cooked once and then placed in the world, where it is eaten in servings. Each is made at the Food Preparation Table from a stack of ordinary cooked food, some raw produce and one of the Bog Witch's spices, and the single item that results must be set down with the Serving Tray before anyone can eat from it. A placed feast has ten servings and visibly empties at six, three and none; the empty platter is picked up with the tray's remove function, and a half-eaten feast picked up early is lost (Valheim Wiki: Feast; Food and Cooking).
Every feast lasts 50 minutes, about twice as long as the individual foods it is made from, and each one levels its biome's health and stamina to the same figure. Eight shipped with the update, one per biome from the Meadows to the Ashlands plus one for the Ocean, and a ninth, Northern Morning Fare, arrived with the Deep North in 1.0 (Valheim Wiki: Feast; Northern Morning Fare).
| Feast | Health | Stamina | Eitr | Healing/tick | Ingredients | Spice |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whole Roasted Meadows Boar | 35 | 35 | None | 2 | Cooked Deer Meat ×2, Cooked Boar Meat ×5, Dandelion ×4 | Woodland Herb Blend |
| Black Forest Buffet Platter | 35 | 35 | None | 3 | Deer Stew ×3, Thistle ×5, Queen's Jam ×4 | Woodland Herb Blend |
| Swamp Dweller's Delight | 35 | 35 | None | 3 | Sausages ×8, Bloodbag ×4, Turnip Stew ×2 | Woodland Herb Blend |
| Sailor's Bounty | 45 | 45 | None | 3 | Cooked Fish ×5, Thistle ×4, Cooked Serpent Meat ×2 | Seafarer's Herbs |
| Hearty Mountain Logger's Stew | 45 | 45 | None | 3 | Wolf Skewer ×2, Onion Soup ×3, Carrot ×4 | Mountain Peak Pepper Powder |
| Plains Pie Picnic | 55 | 55 | None | 4 | Bread ×3, Lox Meat Pie ×2, Cloudberries ×5 | Grasslands Herbalist Harvest |
| Mushrooms Galore á la Mistlands | 65 | 65 | 33 | 5 | Misthare Supreme ×1, Cooked Seeker Meat ×3, Yggdrasil Porridge ×1 | Herbs of the Hidden Hills |
| Ashlands Gourmet Bowl | 75 | 75 | 38 | 6 | Cooked Asksvin Tail ×3, Vineberry Cluster ×5, Scorching Medley ×2 | Fiery Spice Powder |
| Northern Morning Fare | 85 | 85 | ( | ) | Cooked Moose Meat ×3, Poteitr ×5, Oat Flour ×2 | Seasoning of the Gourd |
The Serving Tray is the other half of the system. Equipped like a hammer, it opens a build menu listing every consumable in the player's inventory, and any of them, a sausage, a stack of meads or a feast, can be placed on the ground or a table. Placed food steams, and anyone who walks up and presses use eats or drinks it directly, so a longhouse table can be laid with supplies that no one has to carry. It costs 140 Coins, and the Cooking skill reduces the stamina it uses (Valheim Wiki: Serving Tray; Furniture and Decoration).
The Cooking skill
Cooking is one of three homesteading Skills the update added, and it covers the Cauldron, the Food Preparation Table and the Mead Ketill alike. As it rises it cuts crafting time at those stations by up to 60 percent and gives up to a 25 percent chance of one extra product per craft, a bonus that also applies when cooked meat is lifted from a cooking station or bread from a Stone Oven. Experience comes from every step: 0.25 for crafting a food, 0.1 for placing something on a fire or in an oven and 0.15 for taking it off (Valheim Wiki: Cooking (skill)). Because raw dough is affected twice, once at the table and once at the oven, bread is the usual food for leveling it.
The patch's other convenience, crafting five at once by holding Shift or the left stick, compounds the skill: bonus rolls accumulate across the batch, so five crafts can yield +1, +3, +6, +10 or +15 extra items, and at maximum skill a batch averages 37.5 percent more than its ingredients (Valheim Wiki: Cooking (skill)).
The Farming skill and the Scythe
Farming is earned at 0.25 experience for every swing of the Cultivator, including plain grass-planting, every crop harvested by hand and every use of the Scythe; picking wild berries and mushrooms counts too. It lowers the Cultivator's stamina cost and durability loss by up to half, and gives a chance of up to 25 percent for a bonus crop, seed, mushroom or berry on every harvest, judged by the skill of whoever picks the plant rather than who planted it (Valheim Wiki: Farming (skill); Farming and Taming).
The same patch gave Hildir three garments for it: the Harvest Tunic, Harvest Dress and Straw Hat, unlocked when Brenna's chest is returned to her. Either body piece with the hat forms the Harvester set, worth +25 Farming (Hildir; Armor and Capes).
The Scythe is the skill's tool. Its handle is a post-Moder item at 200 Coins, and with 6 Silver at a level-2 Forge it becomes a two-handed harvester that clears a cone of crops in one swing and does no damage as a weapon. Its reach grows with Farming from 1.5 to 2.5 meters while its stamina cost falls by a third; it can be upgraded twice with Silver, and it does not work on Jotun Puffs or Magecaps (Valheim Wiki: Scythe).
The third skill, Crafting, is the counterpart for the workshop: it shortens crafting times, slows the wear of hammers and other crafting tools, and reduces the stamina cost of placing build pieces (Patch 0.219.13 – The Bog Witch). All three skills are covered in more detail on Skills.
In 1.0
The Valheim 1.0 Release extended her stock to the Deep North: after Kall Fimbulbringer falls she sells the Seasoning of the Gourd, the spice for Northern Morning Fare, a feast of Cooked Moose Meat, Poteitr and Oat Flour that gives 85 health and 85 stamina; a bundle of five costs 220 coins, the most of any spice (Valheim Wiki: Northern Morning Fare). Iron Gate's 1.0 notes also list a purchasable Crown of Roots among the new armor, sold separately from the Crown of Valheim that the final boss's Crown Jewel crafts (Valheim 1.0 patch notes); the Witch Crown trinket of the same update is unrelated to her and is crafted, not bought. The Crown of Roots goes on sale once a Writhan has been killed, for 3,000 coins, by far the dearest thing she stocks, and it gives only 1 armor: it is a crown to wear for its looks.
Frequently asked questions
Where do you find the Bog Witch? In a Swamp between 3,000 and 8,000 meters from the center of the map. Up to ten candidate sites are chosen when a world is generated and the first one a player approaches becomes hers, so the method is to sail along the coasts of Swamps in the middle band of the world and watch for the cauldron icon, which appears at about 300 meters.
What does the Bog Witch sell? Almost entirely ingredients: the spices that complete feasts and the odd materials that complete potions, plus Candle Wicks, Ivy Seeds, Corked Vials, the Scythe Handle, the Serving Tray and the Love Potion. Her stock unlocks in stages as the world's bosses fall.
Can you kill the Bog Witch? No. Like Haldor and Hildir she cannot be harmed. The Kvastur sweeping her floor can be killed, but it has 700 health and a new broom appears a minute later.
What does the Love Potion actually do? It does not tame anything, despite the hearts. While it is active nearby Trolls display hearts above their heads and keep attacking, and its real effect is to increase troll spawning, which makes it a troll-hide farming tool.
How much is the Crown of Roots? 3,000 coins from the Bog Witch, on sale once a Writhan has been killed in the Deep North. It gives 1 armor, so it is bought for its looks.
Does the Bog Witch buy Deep North gems? Yes. Since 1.0 she pays the same as Haldor: Ancient Coins 10 each, Grimvarn 55, Solryth 95, Veydris 135 and Draumyx 175.
What is a feast? A large dish made at the Food Preparation Table from cooked food, raw produce and one of the witch's spices, then set down with the Serving Tray and eaten in servings. Each feast lasts 50 minutes, about twice as long as the foods it is made from, and has ten servings (Food and Cooking).
