Deep North Update (1.0 Patch Notes)

The patch that took Valheim to version 1.0 on Sep 9, 2026: the Deep North biome and final boss, 40+ weapons, four armor sets, 80+ build pieces, bigger pockets, achievements, the Forge of Potential, alternate biomes and chunked saves, plus the 2026 patches before it.

Valheim: 1.0 Out Now

The Deep North Update is the patch that took Valheim out of early access on Sep 9, 2026. Iron Gate's notes call the build simply "1.0"; the previous live version was 0.221.12 from February 2026. Besides the ninth and final biome, the Deep North, and the last boss, Kall Fimbulbringer, it changed systems across the whole game, from inventory size and building menus to world generation and saving. There was no public test: the same build shipped on every platform on the same day, free to existing owners (Iron Gate, Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!; Valheim 1.0 FAQ). The launch itself, its price change and its reception are covered on Valheim 1.0 Release.

The road to 1.0

Three patches in 2026 came first. Patch 0.221.10, "Five Years of Valheim", marked the fifth anniversary of early access on Feb 2 with a Celebratory Cap, the Early Axes, crafted from two rare axe heads found in Meadows chests, Frosted Sweetbread, the Flower Garland and Fey Lights, three hairstyles and a radial emote menu with two new emotes. It also moved the game to Unity 6000.0.61f1, reworked the graphics settings and gave the Steam Deck a 60 fps performance preset (Patch 0.221.10 – Five Years of Valheim!). Patch 0.221.12 on Feb 19, which fixed Vulkan crashes and gamepad crouching, was the last early-access build to go live (Patch 0.221.12).

Patch 0.221.13 reached only the public-test branch, on May 6, 2026. It introduced a world save system that splits a world into chunks, writes only the chunks that have changed and checks each save afterwards, to make saving faster and corruption rarer. Iron Gate asked players to test it before launch, and it shipped in 1.0 (Patch 0.221.13 (Public Test); Word From the Devs: Summoning Our Champions!). Monthly developer posts revealed the rest piece by piece before the release date was announced on Jun 7 (Development History).

The Deep North content

Iron Gate's abbreviated notes list the new biome, more than 40 weapons, new bombs and ammunition, four armor sets, two capes, two trinkets, new tools, more than ten creatures, more than 80 buildable pieces, five crafting-related build pieces, more than 30 materials, more than 20 foods, new locations, music, events and mechanics, upgradeable pockets and achievements (Valheim 1.0 patch notes, Steam).

In the Deep North, snow lies too deep to build on until it is cleared with the Snow Shovel, frozen seas and ponds are slippery underfoot, and a Grappling Hook helps with its towers. The patch's creatures are the Barka, Elaking, Eyeless One, Fallen Warrior, Gammeltroll, Hexen, Krigen and three kinds of Pulp, the tameable and rideable Moose, the Seal and the Writhan. It added two dungeons, the Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla, locations such as abandoned villages, stave halls, ice ponds and memorial sites, and a Jotun invasion with two events, "The Jotun have found you" and "They emerge from below…" (Deep North Creatures; Raids and Events; Carts, Mounts and Vehicles).

Crafting in the biome runs through a new chain. Bloodgold is smelted from Petrified Tissue blasted out of the stone corpses of Gammeltrolls with Ember Charges, whose Embers gather at the Eternal Pyre built from Fader's relic. Moulds found in the Winding Tunnels and villages are made into casts; the Frigid Kiln turns Ice into Liquid Frost, which the Frost Foundry uses to turn a cast into gear. The Black Forge gained Smith's Aprons, the Cauldron a Smoker and the Galdr Table a Standing Loom (Metals and Smelting; Crafting Stations and Upgrades).

The weapons come in three tiers of the same twelve classes, from sword and knucklechains to bow and crossbow: plain Nord weapons, fire-and-frost Frostfire weapons and lightning Thunderblood weapons. Four staves (Echo Spike, Spirit Caller, Northern Vengeance and Lightning Strike), four shields including the Shield of Roots, Bloodgold arrows, bolts, missiles and payloads, and the Ember Charge bomb complete the arsenal. The armor sets are the heavy Protector, medium Vanguard, mage Caller and light Lox Fur; the capes are the Moose Hide Cape and Cape of the Caller; the trinkets are the Neckstabber and Witch Crown; and the Crown of Valheim is crafted from the final boss's Crown Jewel (Weapons and Shields; Magic and Staves; Armor and Capes; Tools).

Builders received a 67-degree roof angle for wood, Ashwood, shingle and thatch; timber and decorated timber poles and beams; fifteen Scalewood wall pieces; three drawbridges and two gates; Ice Blocks and a stone fence; furniture such as the Antler Throne, carved chairs and tables, a Grausten Chest and a Wardrobe; and stacks for every metal bar. Farms gained Kale, Oats, Poteitr and plantable Timberwood, and kitchens more than twenty foods, among them pancakes, meatballs and a feast, Northern Morning Fare (Building and Structural Integrity; Furniture and Decoration; Farming and Taming; Food and Cooking).

Changes across the game

Two upgrades sold by Haldor, Deeper Pockets and Wider Pockets, each add a permanent row to the inventory. The hammer and Serving Tray menus were rebuilt with categories, material filters, recent pieces, favorites and a search box, and every build piece's description was rewritten.

Sixteen Protection and Battle Idols, in eight tiers from wood to Bloodgold, now turn up in chests across the world. At the Forge of Potential, a hidden forge in the Mountain biome with up to ten possible sites per world, they raise an armor piece or weapon beyond its normal maximum level, at the risk of destroying it.

Traveling towards the edge of a world can now turn up alternate versions of earlier biomes, such as a Black Forest with its trees already felled or ground thick with mushrooms. Like all new terrain they generate only in unexplored areas, which is why Iron Gate recommends starting a fresh world (World Map, Generation and Seeds; Valheim 1.0 FAQ).

Achievements arrived, 53 on Steam, along with animated cinematics that play when a player first sleeps after defeating each boss and can be rewatched from the main menu. Tracking starts only once 1.0 is installed; most console commands mark a character and world as ineligible, and items spawned by cheats are labeled in the inventory (Steam store API; Console Commands, Cheats and Mods).

Among the technical changes, a Draw Distance setting lengthens or shortens the simulation distance, and an optional window shows who built each piece. The chunked save system arrived, world generation became much faster, audio and textures were optimized and a minimap memory leak was fixed. Capes and other cloth now use the Magica Cloth system, player movement animations were overhauled, every hair and beard style became available in the character creator rather than only at the barber, and the Unity engine was upgraded again. Controllers gained vibration and Ukrainian became an official language.

The balance changes cut the health of the bear, Bjorn, and its spawn chance in the Black Forest; raised the durability of Mistlands and Ashlands gear; lowered the chance of several Ashlands enemies spawning together while shortening the time between Charred spawns; widened the mist-clearing range of the Wisp Light, Wisp Torch and Mistwalker and let every Mistlands weapon clear mist; changed rare drops so that long unlucky streaks are less likely; and made it easier to climb out of water. The Ocean was left unchanged (Game8; KeenGamer; Valheim 1.0 FAQ). Every achievement and its requirement is on Achievements, and the inventory upgrades are on Wider and Deeper Pockets.

Hotfixes

On Sep 11, 2026 Iron Gate released the first post-launch fixes. Patch 1.0.10, for all platforms, made the Deep North's heavy armor repairable, corrected the damage and healing of Greydwarf Shamans in the biome, stopped punches from clearing snow and added new sounds for the snow and several creatures. Patch 1.0.12, on Steam first and cross-play compatible, stopped the Forge of Potential unlocking the wrong recipes, stopped items on stands losing durability and upgrade levels in worlds not yet loaded in 1.0, fixed a crash and ban-list problems, and added a developer command that lets players who had used cheats opt back into achievements (Hotfix 1.0.10 & 1.0.12). Four more patches followed by Oct 6, 2026: 1.0.14 added a one-key dodge and more key rebinding, 1.0.15 made the Deep North armor moulds easier to find, 1.0.16 stopped terrain changes in the biome from reverting, and 1.0.17 fixed a rare save bug that could erase every object in parts of a world. All of them are covered on Patches Since 1.0.

Frequently asked questions

What version number is the Deep North Update? 1.0. Iron Gate's notes call the build simply "1.0"; the early-access version it replaced was 0.221.12, live since February 2026.

Is the Deep North Update free? Yes for anyone who already owned the game: the same build shipped on every platform on the same day and existing copies updated in place.

Do you need a new world for the Deep North? Old worlds still load, but terrain fixed in the world generates only where nobody has been, so the Deep North, the alternate edge biomes and the Forge of Potential may be missing from an explored map. Iron Gate recommends starting a fresh world.

What did 1.0 change outside the new biome? Deeper and Wider Pockets from Haldor, rebuilt hammer and Serving Tray menus, 16 idols and the Forge of Potential, alternate versions of earlier biomes at the world's edge, 53 achievements with boss cinematics, a Draw Distance setting, the chunked save system and a long list of balance changes.

Were there hotfixes after launch? Yes. The first two came on Sep 11, 2026: Patch 1.0.10 on all platforms and Patch 1.0.12 on Steam, which fixed the Forge of Potential unlocking the wrong recipes and items losing durability on stands. Patches 1.0.14, 1.0.15, 1.0.16 and 1.0.17 followed by Oct 6; see Patches Since 1.0.
