Call to Arms Update

Patch 0.221.4, live on Sep 9, 2025 after a Gamescom public test, reworked Valheim's combat with adrenaline, 13 trinkets, free perfect blocks, a Perfect Dodge Roll and rebalanced Forsaken Powers, and added the bear, the Vile, two armor sets and 18 weapons.

Call to Arms trailer

The Call to Arms Update was the last major content update of Valheim's early access and the only one devoted to Combat. It entered public testing as patch 0.221.3 on Aug 20, 2025, while Iron Gate presented it at Gamescom, and went live as patch 0.221.4 on Sep 9, 2025, exactly a year before the Valheim 1.0 Release. It introduced adrenaline and trinkets, a new type of equippable item; made perfect blocks free and added a Perfect Dodge Roll; rebalanced every Forsaken Power; and added a bear, its undead counterpart the Vile, two armor sets and 18 weapons. The abbreviated notes also list one new skill, one food, eight materials, three build pieces, three hairstyles, five beards, one location and a Unity engine upgrade (Iron Gate, Patch 0.221.4 – Call To Arms).

Development and release

A combat update was already in the works in mid-2025. In a June 2025 interview relayed by YouTuber Jade PG, art lead Robin Eyre said he wanted to learn the game's base difficulty before considering difficulty settings, and that the studio was working on a combat update because combat had to be well polished; the aim was to smooth out its bumps without making it too hard or too complex. Looking back after 1.0, Eyre told PCGamesN: "We never thought we were going to make the combat update, but that came out of necessity for the community" (PCGamesN).

Iron Gate revealed the update at Gamescom in Cologne, where Robin, Andreas and Emilia from the studio met players, and opened the public-test branch the same day with patch 0.221.3 and a new trailer (Patch 0.221.3 – Call To Arms (Public Test); Word from the Devs: Ready For A Fight!). A second test build, 0.221.4, followed on Sep 3: it tuned adrenaline gain and the new creatures, moved trinket crafting from the Workbench to the Forge and Black Forge, let bears swim, and renamed the training dummy "Battle Brother" to T.W.I.G. (Patch 0.221.4 (Public Test)). The same version went live on Steam and Xbox on Sep 9, with a warning that Nvidia users needed current drivers to avoid crashes (Game Rant).

Adrenaline and trinkets

Adrenaline is the update's central system. While wearing a trinket, a player gains adrenaline by landing hits, triggering a Forsaken Power, using certain magic attacks, and performing perfect blocks and perfect dodge rolls. When the bar fills, an adrenaline surge grants a temporary perk defined by the trinket and the bar starts again; outside combat it drains away.

Thirteen trinkets shipped, two for each biome from the Black Forest to the Ashlands plus one for the Ocean, from the Heart of the Forest and Bronze Pendant to the Jörmundling and Brimstone. Most are built around a creature trophy that previously had no use, and their perks range from health, stamina or eitr regeneration to swimming speed, weapon-skill bonuses and instant healing (Game Rant; NickRawcliffe).

Combat changes

A Perfect Block, the game's parry, no longer costs any stamina, and the new Perfect Dodge Roll skill returns part of the stamina spent when a roll avoids an attack that would have hit. The movement-speed penalty of battleaxes, sledgehammers and tower shields was cut, and "vertical fighting improvements" made enemies on slopes easier to hit, a long-standing complaint (Gamepressure). Overencumbered players can no longer dodge.

The three new build pieces serve practice and comfort: an Archery Target that scores each shot, T.W.I.G., a combat dummy that fights back with feeble blows so that players can rehearse parrying, and a Bearskin Rug (Building and Structural Integrity). A small combat ruin was added to the Meadows as the update's one new location.

Forsaken Powers

Every boss power was rebalanced, most by adding a second effect:

Boss Power after Call to Arms
Eikthyr 60% less stamina for running, jumping and swimming
The Elder 60% more chopping and mining damage, 30% faster health regeneration
Bonemass 25% resistance to pierce, slash and blunt; blocking costs no stamina and returns 5
Moder Constant tailwind, +300 carry weight, 10% faster movement, 50% frost resistance
Yagluth 50% lightning resistance, +25 Farming, 10% more damage
The Queen Double eitr regeneration, free sneaking, 50% poison resistance
Fader Double adrenaline gain, 50% less stagger, 50% fire resistance

Moder inherited the carry-weight bonus Fader had given since the Ashlands Update, while Bonemass's physical resistance fell from 50 to 25 per cent, the change Game Rant singled out as a nerf.

Creatures, armor and weapons

Two creatures were added: a bear, which Iron Gate's later notes call Bjorn, in the Black Forest, and the Vile, its undead double, which appears only at night in the Plains. Both drop Bear Hide and Bear Meat, the update's one new food, and their own trophies; the bear also drops paws and the Vile a ribcage. The ghost received a visual overhaul and, for the first time, loot: Ectoplasm and a Ghost Trophy (Meadows and Black Forest Creatures; Plains Creatures).

Their drops make two armor sets: the bear set (Headdress, Patterns and Loincloth of the Bear) for the early game and the Vilebone set (Visage, Cage and Drapes) for the Plains, both trading physical protection for regeneration and damage. Hildir began selling a cosmetic Sweat Band (Armor and Capes).

Half of the 18 weapons are wooden practice versions of existing classes, meant for sparring with friends without hurting them. Five Bottled Blobs, made with Blob Vials bought from The Bog Witch, are thrown to release a poison blob, oozer, tar growth, lava blob or frost blob. The Paws of the Bear and Vilebone Maulclaws are fist weapons, and the Black Metal Battleaxe and Skull Splittur filled gaps in the battleaxe line (Weapons and Shields).

The update also added three hairstyles (Mullet, Castellan and Vinland Shave) and five beards, let many more items hang on item stands in new orientations, rewrote the server list, upgraded Unity to 6000.0.46 and added a setting to enable the developer console (Console Commands, Cheats and Mods).

Reception and aftermath

Community creators were enthusiastic: NickRawcliffe called it a game-changer that was "a lot more than just bears", and SnazzyGames titled its video on the test build "Most TRANSFORMATIVE Valheim Update EVER". Game Rant's Christine Miller wrote that Call to Arms was reason enough to introduce a friend to the game (Game Rant). Players returned: SteamCharts' September 2025 average was 43 per cent above August's, with a peak of 49,088 concurrent players (SteamCharts).

On Sep 18 Iron Gate said more tweaks might follow as it watched how players took to the changes, but that the team was now focused solely on the Deep North and 1.0 (Word From the Devs: We Fight On!); the PlayStation 5 version had been announced two days earlier (Platforms and System Requirements). The Five Years of Valheim patch of February 2026 brought the Carapace Buckler's perfect-block adrenaline into line with other shields, and 1.0 cut the bear's health and Black Forest spawn chance and added two trinkets, the Neckstabber and Witch Crown (Deep North Update (1.0 Patch Notes)).

Frequently asked questions

What are trinkets? A new type of equippable item, thirteen in all, two for each biome from the Black Forest to the Ashlands plus one for the Ocean. Most are built around a creature trophy that previously had no use, and each defines the perk its wearer's adrenaline surge grants.

Did Call to Arms change the Forsaken Powers? Yes, every one was rebalanced, most by gaining a second effect. Moder inherited the carry-weight bonus Fader had given since the Ashlands Update, and Bonemass's physical resistance fell from 50 to 25 per cent.
