Mountain

The fourth biome of Valheim, a snowbound highland where the Freezing effect drains health, wolves and drakes hunt the slopes, silver lies buried under the snow, Frost Caves hide a wolf cult, Moder waits at her altar, and the 1.0 Forge of Potential spawns nowhere else.

The Mountain is the fourth biome in the progression of Valheim, the cold, snow-covered highland that follows the Swamp and precedes the Plains. It is the first region that attacks the player with the weather itself: without frost resistance a Viking on the slopes is under the Freezing effect, which stops health regeneration and drains one health per second. The biome supplies silver and obsidian, the wolf and drake materials for the Mountain tier of gear, the Frost Caves added in March 2022, and the altar of the fourth boss, Moder. Since the Valheim 1.0 Release it is also the only biome in which the Forge of Potential can generate.

Geography and weather

Mountains generate wherever the terrain rises high enough, so small ones can appear near the starting Meadows as well as on large continents. The biome's contents are tied to altitude: snow and wolves begin at roughly 50 meters, obsidian, drake nests and drakes appear from about 100 meters, and silver veins and Stone Golems are found only on the tallest peaks above about 120 meters (Samo's Mountain guide; Valheim wiki). Only fir trees grow here, and blizzards snuff out unsheltered campfires. Ruined towers, forts and abandoned cabins dot the slopes; their chests can hold obsidian, amber, frost arrows and onion seeds, and towers usually house the Vegvisir runestones that mark Moder's altar.

Cold and frost resistance

Entering the biome without protection applies Freezing: health regeneration is reduced by 100 percent, stamina regeneration by 60 percent, and the player loses 1 health per second (Freezing, Valheim wiki). The warmth of a fire cancels it and shelter downgrades it to the milder Cold effect, but none of the resistances below work while the player is Wet, so rain, swimming and snowmelt are as dangerous as the temperature. See Weather, Cold and Wet for the general system.

There are three ways to stay warm. Campfires cancel Freezing while the player stands beside them, which makes a chain of fires up a slope a viable but fiddly first ascent. The Frost Resistance Mead, brewed from 10 honey, 5 thistle, 2 bloodbags and a greydwarf eye and fermented into six meads, grants ten minutes of resistance per drink and also halves the damage of a drake's ice spit (Frost resistance mead, Valheim wiki; see Mead and Potions). Finally, the Wolf Fur Cape (6 wolf pelts, 4 silver and a wolf trophy), the Wolf Armor chest piece, the Fenris Coat, the Lox Cape and later capes carry permanent frost resistance (Armor and Capes).

Creatures

Wolves are the biome's signature threat. They run in packs, hit hard for their 80 health, and howl to draw others in; at night twice as many spawn, including one- and two-star variants with up to 240 health. They drop wolf meat, pelts, fangs and occasionally a trophy, and they are neutral to every damage type, so any good one-handed weapon and a shield will do (Wolf, Valheim wiki). Wolves can also be tamed with raw meat over about thirty minutes, after which they breed, guard bases and can be brought to boss fights (Farming and Taming).

Drakes are small, male frost wyrms that circle the higher slopes and spit three balls of ice for 90 frost damage each. They have only 100 health, take 50 percent extra damage from fire and drop a Freeze Gland, used for frost arrows, Frostner and the stamina food Eyescream, plus a 10 percent chance of the Drake Trophy that crafts the Drake Helmet. They spawn in groups of up to three around drake nests, each of which holds a Dragon Egg (Drake, Valheim wiki).

Stone Golems lie disguised as boulders on the highest peaks and rise when approached. With 800 health, immunity to fire, frost, poison, spirit and chop damage, and a sledge or spike variant each, they are the biome's tank; their weakness is the pickaxe, which deals double damage. They drop 8 to 11 Crystal and cannot climb steep cliffs, so a switchback path is an effective escape (Stone Golem, Valheim wiki).

Fenrings are werewolf-like night hunters with 300 health and a leaping attack that closes distance instantly; they despawn at dawn and, like most of the biome's creatures, take extra damage from fire (Fenring, Valheim wiki). Their four-legged cousins the Ulv and the fire-throwing Cultists live only in the Frost Caves. The full bestiary is on Mountain Creatures.

Creature Health Weak to Notable drops
Wolf 80 / 160 / 240 Nothing (neutral) Wolf meat, Wolf pelt, Wolf fang, Wolf trophy (10%)
Drake 100 Fire Freeze gland, Drake trophy (10%)
Stone Golem 800 Pickaxe (x2) Crystal 8-11, Stone, trophy (5%)
Fenring 300 Fire Wolf fang, Fenring trophy (10%)
Ulv 50 Poison Wolf fang, Ulv trophy
Cultist 200 Poison Red jute 1-2, Cultist trophy (10%)
Bat 10 – Leather scraps

Silver and obsidian

Silver is the reason to climb. Veins lie fully buried beneath the snow of the tallest mountains and are almost never visible from the surface, so the standard tool is the Wishbone dropped by Bonemass, which pulses faster and louder as the player nears buried ore; it also reacts to buried chests at mountain graves, so not every ping is silver. A vein needs an Iron Pickaxe or better, each ore weighs 5, and ore cannot pass through Portals unless the ore-teleport option among the World Modifiers is switched on. Digging a vein free of all surrounding ground and then striking it shatters the whole vein at once (Silver, Valheim wiki).

Smelted in the ordinary Smelter, silver unlocks the Wolf Armor set, the Wolf Fur Cape, the Silver Sword, Silver Shield, Draugr Fang bow and Frostner; the wiki counts 214 silver for one of everything in the tier and about 730 for a fully upgraded set (Metals and Smelting; Weapons and Shields).

Obsidian is the easier prize: dark boulder-like nodes on the higher slopes, mined with an Iron Pickaxe, that weigh only 2 each, stack to 50 and pass through portals. It is the material of Obsidian, Frost and Poison arrows and of the Workbench's tool-shelf upgrade (Obsidian, Valheim wiki; Bows, Crossbows and Arrows). The biome also yields Crystal from golems and cave walls, thistle, onion seeds from chests and Dragon Eggs from drake nests.

Frost Caves

The Frost Caves are the biome's dungeon, instanced like the Black Forest's Burial Chambers and the Swamp's Sunken Crypts. Their entrances are spiky rock formations fringed with large blue icicles, in a rounded and a wolf-snout variant, and are easiest to spot while walking along a slope rather than looking down from above. Inside, sheets of blue ice block passages until broken, icicles fall from the ceiling, and vertical shafts drop through as many as three or four floors; Iron Gate's Smiffe told Jiroc the caves can be up to 60 meters deep (Frost Caves, Valheim wiki).

The caves belong to a wolf cult. Bats and packs of Ulv roam the passages, and behind blood-stained wooden doors wait the Cultists, red-hooded fenrings with 200 health that throw fire and are immune to it; all three are weak to poison, which makes the Draugr Fang and ooze bombs the tools of choice (Cultist, Valheim wiki). Rare variants include a Tetra lake, the only source of that fish, and a frozen lake guarded by Stone Golems where a dead fisherman's rod can be looted; Hildir's Howling Caverns, marked by two blue braziers outside, are a harder variant tied to Hildir's quest.

The loot is Fenris hair, hung from wooden frames and laid on pedestals, and Fenris claws. Together with the Cultist Trophy they craft the Fenris armor, the game's fast light set: the coat (20 hair, 5 wolf pelts, 10 leather scraps), leggings and hood each add 3 percent movement speed, the coat carries frost resistance, and wearing all three grants fire resistance and +15 to the Unarmed skill, pairing with the Flesh Rippers fist weapon (10 hair, 6 claws, 10 silver). Iron Gate's advice, relayed by Jiroc, is that the caves were tuned for a player fresh out of the Swamp in iron gear.

The caves arrived in the Mountain update, patch 0.207.20 of Mar 1, 2022, after two weeks on the public-test branch as 0.207.15 (DualShockers; NME), alongside the new creatures and gear, red jute decorations, the bat raid, controller support and Steam Deck optimization. Co-founder Henrik Törnqvist said the goal was to give the Mountains the close-quarters challenge the Swamp and Black Forest already had (PCGamesN). It was the surviving piece of the "Cult of the Wolf" entry on the 2021 roadmap that Iron Gate canceled in May 2021 (PCGamesN roadmap; GamesRadar), and it only generates in mountains that were unexplored when the patch was installed. See Frost Caves Update.

Moder

The biome's boss is Moder, a frost dragon with 7,500 health (Physgun boss checklist). Her altar is revealed by Vegvisir runestones in mountain towers or Frost Caves, and she is summoned by placing three Dragon Eggs on it. Each egg weighs 200, does not stack and cannot go through a portal, so players rely on the nests near her altar, a cart, or the Megingjord belt from Haldor (Moder, Valheim wiki).

Moder alternates between the air and the ground. Aloft she fires a barrage of sixteen icicles; landed she bites, claws and breathes a 30-meter cone of frost that also carries chop and pickaxe damage, which is why she shreds structures. She is immune to frost, spirit and stagger, which rules out Frostner, and weak to fire, though Obsidian arrows still out-damage fire arrows on her. A pillar of earth raised with the hoe survives her breath indefinitely and gives cover from the barrage, and fights started at dawn avoid the night spawns of fenrings and starred wolves.

Because she is weak to fire, one popular low-risk method is to dig a pit no more than four meters deep, fill it with bonfires, cover it with floor tiles and wait for her to land on it; packs of fifteen or more starred tamed wolves are another. See Moder for every method and Combat for the underlying damage rules.

Moder drops her trophy and 10 Dragon Tears. Hung on her sacrificial stone the trophy grants the Forsaken Power that forces a tailwind while sailing for five minutes, with bonus carry weight, movement speed and frost resistance (Forsaken Powers). The Dragon Tears unlock the Artisan Table, the station that leads on to the Plains' black metal tier (Crafting Stations and Upgrades). Her death also unlocks the "A cold wind blows from the mountains" drake raid (Raids and Events) and, since 1.0, one of Haldor's two new pocket inventory upgrades.

Changes at 1.0

The 1.0 release of Sep 9, 2026 gave the Mountain an exclusive: the Forge of Potential, also called the Hidden Forge or ancient upgrade station, spawns only in this biome. Like the traders it has ten possible sites per world, of which the first the player approaches becomes the real one, marked on the map by an idol icon when within roughly 300 meters (Game8; Game Rant). On worlds created before 1.0 it only generates in mountains that were still unexplored.

The forge consumes Battle Idols, which upgrade weapons, tools and staves, and Protection Idols, which upgrade armor, capes and shields. The idols come in eight material tiers matching the biomes, from Wooden through Bronze, Iron, Silver, Black Metal, Black Marble and Flametal to Bloodgold, and turn up rarely in chests, roughly matched to the biome they are found in; Silver idols are the Mountain's tier. Each successful attempt raises an item one quality level past the ordinary cap of four, and Jade PG reached quality 10 without touching a crafting station.

The catch is the gamble: a failed attempt destroys the item and returns only a portion of its base materials. SnazzyGames puts the failure chance at roughly 35 percent; Iron Gate has not published the formula. A destroyed Dyrnwyn hands back its three fragments, so the one-per-world sword cannot be lost outright. See Forge of Potential.

The rest of the biome is untouched by 1.0's headline changes, which concentrate on the Deep North, a colder region beyond the Ocean whose snowstorms deal freezing damage and whose deep snow must be shoveled before building. The Mountain remains the place to learn the cold before going there.

The Mountain's own Silver idols come from Frost Caves chests and abandoned log cabins; the rest are on Battle and Protection Idols.

Frequently asked questions

How do you survive the cold in the Mountain? Stand by a campfire, drink Frost Resistance Mead for ten minutes of protection, or wear a piece with permanent frost resistance such as the Wolf Fur Cape, the Wolf Armor chest, the Fenris Coat or the Lox Cape. None of them works while the player is Wet, so rain, swimming and snowmelt matter as much as the temperature.

How do you find silver in Valheim? Veins lie fully buried beneath the snow of the tallest peaks, so the standard tool is the Wishbone from Bonemass, which pulses faster as the player nears buried ore. A vein needs an Iron Pickaxe, and digging it free of all surrounding ground shatters the whole vein at once.

What is a Stone Golem weak to? The pickaxe, which does double damage. Golems have 800 health and are immune to fire, frost, poison, spirit and chop, but they cannot climb steep cliffs, so a switchback path is a reliable escape.

How do you beat Moder? Summon her with three Dragon Eggs and fight from cover: a pillar of earth raised with the hoe survives her frost breath indefinitely and blocks her icicle barrage. She is weak to fire and immune to frost, spirit and stagger, which rules out Frostner, and starting at dawn avoids the night spawns of fenrings and starred wolves.

Where is the Forge of Potential? Only in the Mountain. Like the traders it has ten possible sites per world, the first one a player approaches becomes the real one, and an idol icon appears on the map from roughly 300 meters. On worlds made before 1.0 it generates only in mountains that were still unexplored.
