Valheim 1.0: The Deep North out forSince Sep 9, 2026

1Month23Days

Materials and Resources

The non-metal raw materials of Valheim by biome: the seven woods, stone and its variants, hides and fibers, essences and the 30-plus Deep North materials added by 1.0, with where each is gathered and what it is for. Metals have their own page.

Materials are the raw items that every recipe in Valheim consumes: the wood and stone that go into buildings, the hides and threads that become Armor and Capes, the creature parts and plant fibers that unlock Weapons and Shields, Tools and Food and Cooking. Almost all of them are tied to one biome, so the list of materials a player has touched is effectively a record of how far they have traveled. The Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026 rebuilt the hammer menu so that build pieces can be sorted and filtered by material, and added more than thirty new materials for the Deep North (Valheim 1.0 patch notes, BisectHosting). Ores and ingots are covered on Metals and Smelting.

A large grid of wooden, thatch and stone building-piece icons fills the screen over a Viking standing on a paved courtyard beside a shingled house, fences and two hanging braziers; the tabs across the top read Misc 19, Crafting 30, Building 73 and Furniture 43

Woods

Plain Wood is the first material a Viking gathers, from branches on the ground and from beech and fir trees felled with a stone axe. The Meadows also grow oak and birch, but those only fall to a bronze axe or better, and they yield Fine Wood, the material of the finewood bow, most furniture and the Karve. Every tree also gives a chance of Resin, Feathers and its own seed, and a clumsy woodcutter can bring a beech down on an oak to get Fine Wood early (Valheim Wiki: Materials).

The Black Forest adds Core Wood from its pine trees. It unlocks the cultivator, the bronze pickaxe and the finewood bow, and its long log poles and beams carry more weight than plain wood in a building, which is why they appear in almost every support column. The Swamp contributes Ancient Bark from its ancient trees, a dark timber used in the iron-age weapons and in the Ancient Bark Spear and Draugr Fang bow.

The Mistlands have no ordinary forest: their native wood is Yggdrasil Wood, chopped from the glowing Yggdrasil shoots with a black metal axe. It is the backbone of the Mistlands weapons and of the biome's build pieces, alongside Black Marble, which is mined from the giant remains or taken from Dvergr buildings (Valheim Wiki: Materials).

In the Ashlands, the scorched trees give Ashwood and Charcoal Resin and can be felled with any axe, while the rocks and ruins are mined for Grausten, the biome's building stone. The Ashlands update brought more than thirty crafting materials of its own (Game Rant); most are creature drops, such as Asksvin hide and bladders, Bonemaw teeth, Volture eggs and Celestial Feathers, and are covered on Ashlands Creatures.

Timberwood is the wood of the Deep North, cut from the tall Timberwood trees and from the big fallen chunks that lie between them; an axe and a pickaxe do about the same damage to a log. Picking up the first piece unlocks a whole family of Timberwood walls, beams, doors and the late-game Timberwood drawbridge, and the 1.0 notes list it among the plantable crops, so it can be farmed at home instead of hauled south (AllThings.How). It goes into most Deep North gear too: the Moose Saddle, the Smith's Aprons, the Hooded Lantern and many of the Nord weapon casts (Jade PG).

Stone and its relatives

Stone is picked up from the ground in every biome, mined from boulders with a pickaxe and dropped by Greydwarfs and Stone Golems. It becomes the stone axe and hammer on day one and, once a Stonecutter exists, the stone blocks, arches and stairs that give a base real Building and Structural Integrity. Large amounts are gathered most quickly by knocking the base out of a Black Forest ruin or a Plains stone pillar and letting the rest collapse (Valheim Wiki: Materials). Flint lies near water in the Meadows, Obsidian is mined on the Mountain, Black Marble belongs to the Mistlands and Grausten to the Ashlands; Crystal drops from Stone Golems and is mostly decorative.

Hides, pelts and fibers

Each biome's animals provide the hide for its light armor. Boars drop Leather Scraps and deer drop Deer Hide in the Meadows; trolls drop Troll Hide in the Black Forest; wolves drop Wolf Pelts and Wolf Fangs on the Mountain; Lox drop Lox Pelts on the Plains; hares drop Scale Hide in the Mistlands; and bears and Asksvin drop Bear Hide and Asksvin Hide in the Ashlands. Sets built from them are listed on Armor and Capes, and the creatures on the creature pages such as Meadows and Black Forest Creatures and Mountain Creatures.

Plant fibers arrive with the Plains. Flax grows in Fuling villages and is spun into Linen Thread at the Spinning Wheel, an Artisan Table station that needs the Dragon Tear from Moder; Linen Thread and black metal together make the padded armor and the black metal weapons. Barley from the same fields becomes Barley Flour at the Windmill. The Mountain's Frost Caves add Red Jute and Fenris Hair, and Haldor's Ymir Flesh and Thunder Stone are the only materials bought rather than found (Valheim Wiki: Materials). See Farming and Taming and Haldor.

Other biome materials

Beyond wood, stone and hide, every biome has a handful of signature drops. In the Black Forest, Surtling Cores from Burial Chambers build the Charcoal Kiln and Smelter, and Greydwarf Eyes and Ancient Seeds come from the greydwarfs and their nests. The Swamp adds Guck, mined from the green sacks on its trees, plus Ooze, Bloodbags, Entrails and Roots; the Mountain gives Freeze Glands from Drakes; the Plains give Tar from tar pits and Needles from Deathsquitos. The Mistlands Update introduced more than twenty materials (MassivelyOP), among them Sap from extractors on ancient roots, Soft Tissue from the giant skulls, Black Cores from Infested Mines, Wisps from the Wisp Fountain and Carapace from Seekers; Sap and Soft Tissue refine into Refined Eitr, the ingredient of every Magic and Staves recipe (Valheim Wiki: Materials).

Many of these regenerate or can be farmed. Greydwarf nests can be walled into a pit that yields wood, stone, resin and eyes while the player stands by; tar pit growths respawn every couple of hours; and trees planted from seeds and cones grow into a renewable forest. Boars, wolves, Lox, hens and, since 1.0, Moose breed for a steady supply of meat and hide, as described on Farming and Taming.

Deep North materials

The 1.0 patch notes list twenty-five new material entries, and the count is "30+" once Moulds and Casts are counted separately: Bloodgold, Crown Jewel, Dead Pulp, Elaking Hair Bundle, Embers, Frostcore, Frostfire Essence, Frozen Branch, Hook, Ice, Leather Straps, Liquid Frost, Long Claws, Moose Hide, Moose Meat, Moose Sinew, Moulds and Casts, Nornathread, Petrified Tissue, Seal Blubber, Seal Pelt, Seasoning of the Gourd, Thunderblood Essence, Timberwood and Writhan Roots (BisectHosting; KeenGamer). Two of them are found before the biome: Embers are gathered from the Eternal Pyre, a wisp-fountain-like piece unlocked by the Fader Relic, and the Hook turns up in Mistlands Infested Mine chests and unlocks the Grappling Hook.

Seals lie on the coast where a boat first lands. Adults drop Seal Blubber and Seal Pelts; cubs drop nothing (Valheim Wiki: Seal). Blubber is cooked or goes into Seal Meat Soup, and two Seal Pelts with one Embers make ten Ember Charges at an ordinary workbench, the explosive that breaks ice sheets and, more importantly, petrified trolls. Seal Pelt is also part of the Moose Saddle, together with Bloodgold and Timberwood.

Petrified Tissue is the ore of the Deep North. Gammeltrolls turn to stone when killed and cannot be mined; an Ember Charge at each foot blows the statue apart, and the golden-flecked tissue is smelted in a Blast Furnace into Bloodgold, which is described on Metals and Smelting. Like the other ores it cannot pass through a wooden portal.

Moose drop Moose Hide, Moose Meat and Moose Sinew, and are the biome's tameable animal, won over with Lingonberries. Moose Hide makes the Moose Hide Cape, the Smith's Aprons that add a level to the Black Forge, and the Moose Hide carpet (Jade PG); the meat is smoked at the new Smoker for the biome's health foods. The Barka, a frozen tree-creature resembling The Elder, drops Frozen Branch, which the greatsword cast requires (Valheim Wiki: Barka); a felled one also scatters Timberwood and Ice.

The Winding Tunnels under the abandoned villages hold three materials. Frostcore, floating blue orbs on the walls, unlocks the Frigid Kiln and Frost Foundry, each of which needs ten, so guides advise collecting at least twenty (Postmode). Luminous Larvae build the Hooded Lantern with Timberwood. Elaking, the tunnels' pack hunters, drop Elaking Hair Bundles, and their brute, the Eyeless One, drops Long Claws, which unlock a weapon cast. Moulds, the new pattern items, drop from the tunnels' debris and from Elaking and Krigen, and are consumed when combined with their ingredients into a cast. See Deep North Creatures and Crafting Stations and Upgrades.

Ice is the fuel of the whole forging chain. It is picked up from frozen cadavers on the shore, mined from ice sheets and frozen ponds, and dropped by the biome's frozen Skeletons and Greydwarfs (Game Rant). The Frigid Kiln turns 25 Ice into 5 Liquid Frost, and the Frost Foundry spends 5 Liquid Frost to harden one cast into a finished weapon, key or piece of armor, so every Nord item costs 25 Ice on top of its mould and Bloodgold.

The Jotun of the Gates of Mörkhalla carry the remaining crafting materials. Hexen drop Nornathread, "spun from the power of the world tree itself", the ingredient of the four Deep North staves and of the Standing Loom that upgrades the Galdr Table (Valheim Wiki: Hexen). Krigen drop Leather Straps, Memorial Coal and, rarely, armor moulds. The Hexahedric Pulp and its Shapeless and Tiny offspring leave Dead Pulp, needed for a new blood-magic bomb. Frostfire Essence and Thunderblood Essence, which turn a Nord weapon into its fire or lightning version, are a 20 percent drop from the Fallen Warrior summoned with Memorial Coal at a Memorial Site.

The two essences are the only Deep North materials with no fixed source: each summoning at a Memorial Site produces a different ghost with a different weapon, and the essence it drops decides which elemental weapons a player can make. The Crown Jewel, dropped by Kall Fimbulbringer, crafts the Crown of Valheim.

One 1.0 material is not northern at all. Writhan Roots drop from the Writhan, a rare undead root-creature added to the Swamp that explodes when badly hurt. The roots go into the Shield of Roots, the Lox Fur Hood and the Birds' Nest, a wall-hung piece (2 Writhan Roots, 5 Thistle, 3 Acorns) that produces feathers over time like a beehive and holds four at once (Game8). See Swamp Creatures. Seasoning of the Gourd is listed in the notes as a purchasable cooking ingredient.

Frequently asked questions

How many kinds of wood are there in Valheim? Seven, one per biome that has trees: Wood, Core Wood, Fine Wood, Ancient Bark, Yggdrasil Wood, Ashwood and Timberwood.

How do you get Fine Wood in Valheim? Fell the Meadows oaks and birches, which only a bronze axe or better will cut. A clumsy woodcutter can get it earlier by dropping a beech onto an oak.

Where do you find Timberwood? In the Deep North, cut from the tall Timberwood trees and the fallen chunks between them, and picked up from roots inside the Winding Tunnels. It is also plantable, so it can be farmed at home instead of hauled south: since Patch 1.0.21 of Oct 28, 2026 Deep North trees drop Timberwood cones, which grow into a huge tree that drops more Timberwood when planted in a gentler biome (Iron Gate).

How do you get Bloodgold? Kill a Gammeltroll, which turns to stone, blow the statue apart with an Ember Charge at each foot, and smelt the Petrified Tissue in a Blast Furnace. Ember Charges come ten at a time from one Embers and two Seal Pelts.

Can materials go through portals? Most can, but ores cannot pass a wooden portal, Petrified Tissue among them, which is why hauling metal still means sailing.
