Black Marble
Black Marble is the Mistlands building stone of Valheim, mined from giant remains with a Black metal pickaxe or salvaged from Dvergr structures. Where to find it, fast ways to mine it, its fire-proof build pieces and every recipe that uses it.
Black Marble is a building and crafting stone in Valheim, mined in the Mistlands from the petrified skeletons of giants with a Black metal pickaxe or salvaged from Dvergr buildings, and used for the Mistlands crafting stations and a set of build pieces that fire, frost and lightning cannot damage. It weighs 2, stacks to 50 and, unlike ore, can be carried through portals (Black marble, Valheim Wiki; Materials and Resources). Its description calls it solid stone seamed with shifting colors.

Where to find Black Marble
The main source is the giant remains that lie half-buried across the Mistlands, which a runestone names as the bones of the Jotunn. Each is a skull, a ribcage or both, and only a Black metal pickaxe or better can break them. Every node gives two to four marble: a skull averages about 387 and a ribcage about 396 when fully mined, and the brain-shaped deposit inside a skull gives about 59 soft tissue for refined eitr (Giant Remains, Valheim Wiki; Eitr). Ticks guard many of them, and Hugin's advice on first sight is to pick their bones.
The Dvergr also built with marble. Their outposts can be mined, or deconstructed with a Stonecutter nearby, though breaking warded pieces angers any Dvergr still living there (Dvergr Outposts). The ruined viaducts are easier: nobody defends them, and each pillar holds about 150 marble, 48 iron and 8 copper scrap. wak4863 takes them apart with a Stonecutter, then builds a Forge to break the iron cage inside, and the rest of the bridge collapses into loot (Dvergr viaduct, Valheim Wiki).
Killed Dvergr rogues and mages drop marble half the time, and some features of the Infested Mines and the Queen's citadel break into it. A Seeker Soldier's slam counts as pickaxe damage, so a Soldier can smash marble deposits for a player who has no black metal yet (Seeker soldier, Valheim Wiki; Mistlands Creatures).
How to mine Black Marble fast
Chipping a skeleton node by node is slow and loud. Jason Plays uses the same trick as for silver veins: dig away all the earth around the ribs or skull, and any roots or rocks touching them, until they float free, then strike once. With nothing supporting it the whole structure shatters, dropping hundreds of marble at once. The brain inside a skull is a separate object and has to be struck on its own.
Black Marble building pieces
Marble pieces are built and repaired within range of a Stonecutter. They have 1,500 durability and are weak only to pickaxes, immune to fire, frost, lightning, poison and spirit, and never damaged by rain. The wiki's stability table gives marble a maximum support of 1,500 against stone's 1,000, and it loses only half its support per horizontal step where stone loses all of it, so marble can span and overhang where stone cannot (Black marble structures, Building stability, Valheim Wiki; Building and Structural Integrity). NickRawcliffe singles out the new angled pieces and pillars for giving a base the look of an ancient temple.
| Piece | Marble | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Floor | 4 | 2×2 |
| Floor, triangle | 3 | 2×2 |
| Stair | 8 | 2×2 |
| Block 1×1×1 | 2 | 1×1×1 |
| Block 2×1×1 | 4 | 2×1×1 |
| Block 2×2×2 | 8 | 2×2×2 |
| Cornice / cornice corner | 5 / 6 | 1×2×2 / 2×2×2 |
| Plinth / plinth corner | 5 / 6 | 1×2×2 / 2×2×2 |
| Quarter spire | 2 | 1×1×1 |
| Column, small / wide | 2 / 4 | 1×1×1 / 2×2×1 |
| Arch | 5 | 2×1×2 |
| Bench / table | 6 each, plus 3 copper | 3×1 / 2×3 |
| Throne | 20, plus 4 scale hide, 2 deer hide, 5 copper | 1×2 |
| Black marble pile | 50 | Storage stack |
Marble's elemental immunity is its best-known use. The Eitr Refinery throws off lightning and poison discharges while it works, and dropped refined eitr keeps discharging, which wears down wood and ordinary stone; marble walls and floors, like iron and copper cage pieces, take no damage, so refineries are usually cased in marble (Eitr refinery, Valheim Wiki).

Ceramic plates tie marble to the Ashlands: the Drakkar that crosses its boiling sea needs 30, and every shield core for a shield generator needs 5 (Ceramic plate, Drakkar, Valheim Wiki; Sailing and Ships).
History
Black marble arrived with the Mistlands Update, patch 0.212.7 of Dec 6, 2022, along with the giant remains, the Dvergr buildings and the marble building set (Patch 0.212.7 – Mistlands!, Steam). Later updates kept finding it uses: the Unfading Candles of Hildir's Request Update in 2023, and the Metal Cutter, Artisan Press and ceramic plates of the Ashlands Update in 2024. The Ashlands' own grausten is stronger still, with a maximum support of 2,000.
