Yggdrasil Wood

Yggdrasil wood is the Mistlands' wood in Valheim, chopped from Yggdrasil shoots with a Black Metal Axe. It builds the Black Forge, Galdr Table and Eitr Refinery, many Mistlands weapons, three staves, Dvergr build pieces, the Drakkar and, since 1.0, the Grappling Hook.

Yggdrasil wood is the native wood of the Mistlands in Valheim, chopped from the spindly Yggdrasil shoots with a Black Metal Axe and needed for the biome's crafting stations, many of its weapons and its staves. Its in-game description, "Godflesh, wood from the Great Tree", ties it to Yggdrasil, the world tree whose branches arch across Valheim's sky (Lore and Setting). Like other wood it weighs 2, stacks to 50 and passes freely through portals, but it cannot be burned into coal in a Charcoal Kiln (Yggdrasil Wood, Valheim Wiki).

Where to find Yggdrasil wood

Yggdrasil shoots grow almost everywhere in the Mistlands, among the rocks, the glowing ancient roots and the giant skeletons (Mistlands). A felled large shoot always drops 20 pieces of wood, split at random between ordinary Wood and Yggdrasil wood with an average of ten each, and its stump gives two more Wood. Small shoots give only two or three pieces, each with a 17 percent chance of being Yggdrasil wood, which is why NubbQueen's guide tells players to ignore the saplings and look for full-grown shoots (Yggdrasil Shoot, Valheim Wiki). Breaking certain Dvergr structures in the biome also yields small amounts (Dvergr Outposts).

How to chop Yggdrasil wood

Shoots take damage only from a Black Metal Axe or better, so Yggdrasil wood comes after the Plains. The axe needs 6 Fine Wood, 20 Black Metal and 5 Linen Thread at a level 4 Forge; the Mistlands' Jotun Bane also fells shoots (Black Metal Axe, Valheim Wiki; Tools; Metals and Smelting).

There are two workarounds. A Seeker Soldier can knock down even large shoots, which lets a player skip the Black Metal Axe and go straight to the Jotun Bane; and once a Black Forge stands, small shoots can be broken with Mistlands weapons such as the Skoll and Hati knives, which have no chop damage at all (Yggdrasil Shoot, Valheim Wiki).

The first piece picked up unlocks new recipes, among them the Black Metal Pickaxe, the Wisp Torch and the Yggdrasil wood stack. The pickaxe, 3 Yggdrasil wood and 25 Black Metal at a level 2 Forge, is the first priority: it is needed to mine Black Marble from the giant remains and to reach the Soft Tissue inside their skulls, and it is the last pickaxe in the game (Black Metal Pickaxe, Valheim Wiki; Black Marble).

What Yggdrasil wood builds

Most of the Mistlands' infrastructure is built from it:

Build piece Yggdrasil wood Other materials Purpose
Black Forge 10 10 Black Marble, 5 Black Core Mistlands metal crafting station
Galdr Table 20 10 Black Metal, 5 Black Core, 5 Refined Eitr Magic crafting station
Rune Table 5 10 Black Marble, 10 Refined Eitr Galdr Table upgrade
Eitr Refinery 10 20 Black Marble, 5 Black Metal, 5 Black Core, 3 Sap Turns Sap and Soft Tissue into Refined Eitr
Sap Extractor 10 5 Black Metal, 1 Dvergr Extractor Draws Sap from ancient roots
Ballista 10 10 Black Metal, 3 Mechanical Springs Defensive turret
Wisp Torch 1 1 Wisp Permanent mist-clearing light
Drakkar 25 100 Iron Nails, 30 Ceramic Plates, 50 Fine Wood Ashlands longship

The Sap Extractor shows how the chain works. It needs a Dvergr Extractor looted from the component crates of Dvergr outposts plus Yggdrasil wood, which FireSpark81 notes is easy to come by because shoots grow all over the biome; set on an ancient root, it slowly fills with Sap (Crafting Stations and Upgrades).

The Sap goes into the Eitr Refinery, again part Yggdrasil wood, which combines one Sap and one Soft Tissue into one Refined Eitr, the ingredient of most Mistlands weapons and of the staves that draw on a player's Eitr (Magic and Staves).

The Dvergr-style build pieces need it too, with a Black Forge nearby: the spiral staircases and Hexagonal Gate take 8 Yggdrasil wood plus Copper, the stakewall 8 and the sharp stakes 5 plus Iron. They count as hard wood for Building and Structural Integrity (Dvergr Wood Structures, Valheim Wiki).

About half the Mistlands weapons do without it: the Mistwalker, Krom, Skoll and Hati, the Spinesnap and the Arbalest (Weapons and Shields; Bows, Crossbows and Arrows).

The Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026 gave the wood a new job. The Grappling Hook, 1.0's climbing tool for cliffs and dungeon towers, is made from Yggdrasil wood, Refined Eitr, Mandibles and a Hook, and the Hook cannot be crafted or bought: Kysen's launch guide finds it only in loot chests in the Mistlands, and picking it up unlocks the recipe (Carts, Mounts and Vehicles). The 1.0 patch also raised the durability of Mistlands gear and made every Mistlands weapon clear mist (Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!, Iron Gate).

History

Yggdrasil wood, the Yggdrasil shoot and the wood stack arrived with the Mistlands Update, patch 0.212.7 of Dec 6, 2022, after a public test that began on Nov 22 (Patch 0.212.7 – Mistlands!, Iron Gate). The Ashlands Update of 2024 added the Drakkar and 1.0 the Grappling Hook; the Deep North builds with its own plantable wood, Timberwood.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I chop Yggdrasil shoots? They take damage only from a Black Metal Axe or better; bronze and iron axes do nothing. Forge the Black Metal Axe at a level 4 Forge from Fine Wood, Black Metal and Linen Thread.

How much Yggdrasil wood does a shoot give? A large shoot drops 20 pieces of wood, on average ten of them Yggdrasil wood; small shoots give two or three pieces with only a 17 percent chance each.

Can you get Yggdrasil wood without a Black Metal Axe? Yes. Seeker Soldiers can knock shoots down, Mistlands weapons such as Skoll and Hati break small shoots, and some Dvergr structures drop a little when destroyed.

What should I craft first with Yggdrasil wood? The Black Metal Pickaxe, then the Black Forge, Sap Extractor and Eitr Refinery that the rest of the Mistlands gear depends on.
