Deep North Creatures
The creatures added by Valheim 1.0 for the Deep North: hostile Barka, Elaking, Eyeless One, Gammeltroll, Fallen Warrior, Jotun Krigen and Hexen and the three Pulps; tameable Moose; passive Seals and the Writhan; with their drops and trophies.
The Deep North creatures are the roster of animals and enemies that arrived with the Deep North biome in the Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026, listed in Iron Gate's patch notes as ten enemies, two tameable animals and three other creatures: Barka, Elaking, Eyeless One, Fallen Warrior, Gammeltroll, Hexen, Krigen, Hexahedric Pulp, Shapeless Pulp and Tiny Pulp; Moose and Moose Calf; Seal, Baby Seal and Writhan (Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!). The biome's boss, the frost giant Kall Fimbulbringer, has his own page. Frost-covered Greydwarfs, Greydwarf Shamans and Skeletons also roam the snow and drop Ice (Game8). Compared with the Ashlands, the creatures are larger but far rarer, a contrast Iron Gate told previewers was deliberate.

Health and drop figures are read from the 1.0 game files by Physgun's Valheim tools and the Valheim Wiki; star levels raise both.
Seal and Baby Seal
Seals are the first Deep North creature most players meet, lying on the ice and shores of the coast. They are passive, like the deer of the Meadows, and starred Seals grow horns; they cannot be bred (Kysen). An adult (400 HP, weak to fire) drops 2–3 Seal Pelt and 2–3 Seal Blubber and has a 10% chance of a Seal Trophy; a Baby Seal has 200 HP and drops at most a single Blubber, which is why every guide says to leave the pups alone (Physgun; Sportskeeda).
One Ember and two Seal Pelt make ten Ember Charges at a workbench, the only thing that breaks a petrified Gammeltroll; the pelt also goes into the Moose Saddle, the Cape of the Caller and the Lox Fur set. Blubber is cooked and used in foods such as Seal Meat Soup; see Food and Cooking. Full page: Seal.
Moose and Moose Calf
The Moose is the Deep North's answer to the Lox: a large antlered animal of the Timberwood forests that charges anyone who comes near, kicks hard, and has 1,000 HP with resistance to blunt, slash and frost and a weakness to fire (Physgun). Killed, it drops 4–6 Moose Meat, 2–3 Moose Hide and 2–3 Moose Sinew, plus a 10% Moose Trophy; the hide makes the Moose Hide Cape and the Smith's Aprons upgrade.
Moose Calves (also 1,000 HP) roam with the adults and are just as aggressive. A Moose is tamed like a Wolf or Lox, penned and fed the one food it eats, Lingonberries, until hearts appear; tamed Moose breed, and calves inherit a parent's star level (Sportskeeda). The Moose Saddle is made at a level-2 Artisan Table from 4 Bloodgold, 5 Seal Pelt, 5 Timberwood and 15 Linen Thread, and a saddled Moose is the fastest mount in the game (12.6, against 9 for the Asksvin and 7 for the Lox). See Farming and Taming and Carts, Mounts and Vehicles. Taming and riding step by step: Moose.
Elaking
Elaking are the biome's common enemy: small, white-furred hunters that run in packs, claw, bite and leap, and are most active on the surface at night (Sportskeeda). With 350 HP they die quickly, but even a one-star Elaking hits hard. Their real home is the Winding Tunnels beneath every Abandoned Village, where wardrobe-like shafts in the walls act as spawners and release several at once when broken. Elaking is Swedish for a mean person, as SnazzyGames points out.
Every Elaking drops 1–2 Elaking Hair Bundle, a white fur used in the Deep North armor casts, and one in five carries the Mould for the Intricate Key that opens the Gates of Mörkhalla (Physgun). They are weak to fire, resist frost, and return in numbers during a Jotun Invasion. Full page: Elaking.
Eyeless One
The Eyeless One is the brute of the Winding Tunnels, an ogre-like humanoid with no eyes that erupts from the tunnel floor without warning and slashes with long claws. It has 1,400 HP, resists frost, and its blows carry poison as well as blunt and slash damage (Physgun). It can be parried once its timings are learned, but is deadly when Elaking swarm at the same time.
It drops 1–2 Long Claws, the material for the Nord Knucklechains fist weapon, and has a 50% chance of a Mould: Intricate Key, the surest source of keys (Sportskeeda). Its internal name is ElakingMole (Valheim Wiki). Full page: Eyeless One.
Barka
Barka are giant frozen tree-creatures that stand still among the Timberwood until a player approaches, when they resemble a thinner, icy version of The Elder. Iron Gate told PC Gamer that a Barka is what a Greydwarf becomes just before it turns into an Elder (PC Gamer). They are slow but reach far: a forward slash, a charge, an overhand double-handed strike, and ice projectiles that leave a frostburn effect (Sportskeeda).
With 2,200 HP, resistance to every physical type plus frost and lightning, and immunity to poison and spirit, a Barka is among the tankiest things in the biome; fire is its only weakness (Physgun). It always drops a Frozen Branch, with wood and Ice, and has a 10% chance of the Barka Trophy, "the frozen head of a once-living tree" (Valheim Wiki). SnazzyGames rates it the most dangerous surface creature in the Deep North. Full page: Barka.
Gammeltroll and Petrified Gammeltrolls
The Gammeltroll (Swedish for "old troll") is the largest creature in Valheim. In the game's lore these are the trolls of the Black Forest grown old: as they age they grow bigger and bearded, and when their time comes they walk north to die (SnazzyGames). A Gammeltroll hurls a stream of whole logs at range, which then lie in the snow and can be chopped for wood, and stomps anything that closes in. It has 3,000 HP, is immune to fire and spirit, resists blunt, slash, pierce and frost, and takes extra damage from pickaxes, double on the head (Valheim Wiki).
A dead Gammeltroll drops no loot; it petrifies where it stands. The statue becomes part of the terrain, can be built on or left as decoration, and only Ember Charges break it. Charges planted at the legs bring the body down for Petrified Tissue, the raw form of Bloodgold, which a Blast Furnace refines; the wiki counts 52 segments per statue and about 43 tissue per troll, the rest of each blast being Stone (Valheim Wiki). Petrified Gammeltrolls also generate naturally, half-buried in the snow, so a player who avoids the fight can still gather tissue (EmmaTpotato). See Metals and Smelting.
Hexahedric, Shapeless and Tiny Pulp
The Pulps live behind the doors of Mörkhalla and work as one creature in three stages. The Hexahedric Pulp is a cube with 600 HP that does not attack but spawns a Shapeless Pulp every five seconds while it stands; Shapeless Pulps (150 HP) are fast blobs whose blows carry heavy poison damage, and each one killed breaks into Tiny Pulps (50 HP), which do not attack (Valheim Wiki; EmmaTpotato). Poison resistance mead is the standard advice.
The blobs are weak to blunt, frost and lightning, resist slash, pierce and fire, and are immune to poison; the cube is instead weak to fire and frost (Physgun). They drop Dead Pulp and, rarely, the Pulp Trophy, both used for the Pulp Bomb, the Deep North's entry in the blob-bomb line; the cube also breaks into Scrap Iron, Timberwood and Lingonberries. Full page: Pulp.
The Jotun: Krigen and Hexen
Krigen are the Jotun's foot soldiers, tall warriors resembling the Swamp's Draugr, who garrison the Gates of Mörkhalla in single- and dual-wielding forms with swords and battleaxes. Their attacks are telegraphed apart from a quick lunge and a headbutt when a player backs away, but they come in groups, sometimes led by a multi-star elite (Sportskeeda). A Krigen has 1,300 HP, no weakness, resistance to pierce and frost and immunity to poison (Physgun).
The densest crowd of Krigen guards the Malicious Ice at the bottom of every Mörkhalla. Each drops 1–3 Leather Straps, one in five carries Memorial Coal, and there is a 5% chance per piece of the Vanguard armor moulds, with the two-handed variant carrying the heavy Protector set's moulds instead; the Jotun are the only source of the Deep North armor moulds (SnazzyGames). Patch 1.0.15 of Sep 18, 2026 raised the chance of finding them by making both kinds of Jotun warrior drop both the medium and the heavy moulds (Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.15). See Armor and Capes.
Hexen are the Jotun's witches: floating casters that whirl around the dungeon, teleport away when approached and hurl lightning that knocks the player back. Melee builds struggle with them; bows, crossbows and fire staves are the usual answer (Sportskeeda). A Hexen has 800 HP, is weak to fire, takes a quarter damage from frost, and is immune to poison and spirit. She drops 1–3 Nornathread, the thread for the Standing Loom, the Caller mage set and the Cape of the Caller, with a 10% chance of a finished Intricate Key and 5% chances of each Caller mould (Physgun). Each has its own page: Krigen and Hexen.
Jotun Invasions
Smashing the Malicious Ice at the bottom of a Mörkhalla starts a Jotun Invasion somewhere else in the world. Unlike a raid, it begins without the player present and never ends on its own: the land around the marker turns to snow under falling meteors, and Krigen, Hexen and Elaking spawn continuously and fight whatever lives there (SnazzyGames). Destroying the larger Malicious Ice at the center ends it and drops the Malicious Blood that summons Kall Fimbulbringer.
Because the spawning never stops, Kysen suggests leaving one invasion running after the game is finished as a permanent farm for Jotun drops. Two new raid events, "The Jotun have found you" and "They emerge from below…", also bring the Jotun to a player's base; see Raids and Events. Full page: Jotun Invasion.
Fallen Warrior
The ghosts that wander the Abandoned Villages, talking among themselves, are harmless and cannot be fought. The Fallen Warrior is their hostile form, summoned at a Memorial Site by placing Memorial Coal on the altar; a random spirit such as Krossulfr the Skald appears with one of several weapon types and fights until defeated, then kneels and declares the player proven (EmmaTpotato). It belongs to the Undead faction with 750 HP, is weak to spirit damage, immune to poison, and resists blunt, slash, pierce and fire (Physgun).
It exists for its loot: Frostfire Essence and Thunderblood Essence, the materials that turn Nord weapons into their elemental forms. The game files give each a 50% chance (Physgun), though the June preview build reported about 20%, and Sportskeeda saw melee spirits give Thunderblood and magic spirits Frostfire. Several can be summoned at once. See Weapons and Shields. Full page, with the Memorial Sites: Fallen Warrior.
Writhan
The Writhan is the one 1.0 creature that sources cannot agree on. Iron Gate's patch notes file it under "Creature" rather than "Enemy", beside the Seals and the Moose Calf, and add a Writhan Trophy and the material Writhan Roots (Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!). Datamined databases describe an undead creature of the Swamp with 400 HP, weak to slash and resistant to blunt and fire, dropping 1–2 Writhan Roots, "the gnarled body parts of a strange, offputting creature" (Physgun); the Valheim Wiki lists it among the Deep North's hostiles but has no page for it. The roots go into two recipes, the Shield of Roots and the Lox Fur Hood. Patch 1.0.15 of Sep 18, 2026 made the Writhan spawn more often and in more areas (Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.15). See Swamp Creatures. The Valheim Wiki has since documented it as a rare Swamp creature whose death unlocks the Crown of Roots at the Bog Witch; the details are on Writhan.
Trophies
Eleven creature trophies were added at 1.0: Barka, Elaking, Eyeless One, Hexen, Krigen, Moose, Pulp, Seal and Writhan, plus Frost Blob and Lava Blob trophies for the blobs of earlier biomes (KeenGamer). At 1.0 each dropped at 10%. Trophies were the most common complaint after launch, and Patch 1.0.20 of Oct 15, 2026 made "Trophy drop chance" rise with "star level of monsters" and stopped the pseudo-random drop logic from resetting between play sessions, so rare drops even out over long play (Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.20). The Valheim Wiki's drop tables, read on Oct 23, 2026, now double the chance with each star:
| No star | One star | Two stars | Used in | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seal | 10% | 20% | 40% | Decoration |
| Moose | 10% | 20% | 40% | Headdress of the Caller, Neckstabber, Spirit Caller, Antler Throne |
| Eyeless One | 10% | 20% | 40% | Decoration |
| Krigen | 10% | 20% | 40% | Decoration |
| Writhan | 10% | 20% | 40% | Decoration |
| Lava Blob | 10% | 20% | 40% | Decoration |
| Elaking | 10% | 20% | no two-star form | Decoration |
| Hexen | 10% | 20% | no two-star form | Northern Vengeance, Witch Crown |
| Barka | 10% | never starred | never starred | Decoration |
| Frost Blob | 10% | never starred | never starred | Decoration |
| Pulp | 10% | 10% (wiki) | 10% (wiki) | Blob Bomb: Pulp |
Starred creatures are therefore the quickest way to a trophy: Krigen and Hexen carry stars in Jotun Invasions, and tamed Moose can be bred for starred calves. The Pulp Trophy comes from the Shapeless stage and doubles as a bomb ingredient; the wiki still lists it at 10% at every star. Any trophy also hangs on an item stand or breaks down into one Coal in an Obliterator (Valheim Wiki: Trophies). Kall Fimbulbringer leaves no trophy; his Sacrificial Blood hangs below the Sacrificial Stones instead. Since patch 1.0.14 of Sep 17, 2026 the ballista accepts every Deep North enemy's trophy, along with those of Bjorn and the Vile (Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.14). See Furniture and Decoration.
Frequently asked questions
How do you tame a Moose in Valheim? Pen or pit one and feed it Lingonberries, the only food it eats. Tamed moose breed, calves inherit a parent's star level, and a hurt moose heals when fed; riding one needs the Moose Saddle (Farming and Taming).
How do you kill a Gammeltroll? It has 3,000 health, is immune to fire and spirit and resists blunt, slash, pierce and frost, but takes extra damage from pickaxes, double on the head. It drops nothing and petrifies where it falls; Ember Charges planted at the legs bring the statue down for Petrified Tissue.
What is a Jotun Invasion? Smashing the Malicious Ice at the bottom of a Mörkhalla starts one elsewhere in the world. It begins without the player present and never ends on its own: the land turns to snow under falling meteors while Krigen, Hexen and Elaking spawn continuously. Destroying the larger Malicious Ice at its center ends it and drops the Malicious Blood that summons Kall Fimbulbringer.
Where do the Deep North armor moulds come from? Only from the Jotun. At launch Krigen carried the Vanguard moulds, or the heavy Protector set's moulds in their two-handed form, at about 5% a piece, and Hexen the Caller moulds at the same rate. Since patch 1.0.15 of Sep 18, 2026 both kinds of Krigen drop both the Vanguard and the Protector moulds (Patches Since 1.0).
What is the trophy drop chance for Deep North creatures? 10% for a creature with no star. Since Patch 1.0.20 of Oct 15, 2026 the chance rises with star level: the Valheim Wiki lists 20% at one star and 40% at two for Seals, Moose, Eyeless Ones, Krigen and the Writhan, and 20% for a one-star Elaking or Hexen. Barka never carry a star and stay at 10%.
Should you kill baby seals? Guides say no. A Baby Seal has 200 health and drops at most one Seal Blubber, while an adult gives 2–3 Seal Pelt and 2–3 Seal Blubber and a 10% chance of the trophy.
