Ashlands Creatures

The creatures of Valheim's Ashlands, added in May 2024: the undead Charred and their spawners, Voltures, Lava Blobs, the tameable Asksvin, the rolling Morgen, the Fallen Valkyrie, the Bonemaw Serpent and the Skugg turrets, plus what 1.0 changed about how they spawn.

Ashlands gameplay trailer

The creatures of the Ashlands are the bestiary of the burning biome that Valheim added on May 14, 2024: more than ten of them, the largest any single update had brought (Game Rant; Steam patch notes). Most of them belong to one of two groups: the Charred, an undead army in four kinds that holds the coast and the fortresses, and the beasts of the lava fields inland. Only one, the Asksvin, can be tamed. Together with the miniboss Lord Reto and the boss Fader, they make the biome the most dangerous place in the game before the Deep North. Unusually for Valheim, friendly fire between Ashlands creatures is deliberate: a Morgen's swipe or a Lava Blob's explosion hurts the Charred standing next to it (Valheim Wiki).

The whole roster shares a few rules. Nearly everything here shrugs off fire, so the fire arrows and Staff of Embers of earlier biomes lose most of their value, while nothing in the biome resists lightning. The Charred are weak to spirit; the beasts and the serpent are mostly weak to frost, and the slow that frost applies is as useful as the damage against the hordes the biome throws at once. See Combat for damage types and Weapons and Shields for the Ashlands weapons made to fight them.

The Charred

The Charred are burnt skeletons that fight as a coordinated army. The weakest and most common is the Charred Twitcher, which lobs a rock from a distance and then closes in to scratch. It has 220 health at zero stars, resists pierce, takes only a quarter damage from fire, and drops a single Charred bone with no trophy (Valheim Wiki). Twitchers rarely arrive alone: the day-time spawn limit in the middle of the biome is four, rising to five at night.

The Charred Warrior is the line infantry, a greatsword-wielder with 600 health whose four attacks include a swing, a thrust and feint versions of both that look almost identical to the real thing, which makes it hard to parry. The Charred Marksman has only 200 health and no melee attack at all; it fires single arrows inside twenty meters and, from further away, a volley of ten arrows at once. Both drop one or two Charred bones and have a 5% chance of a trophy (Charred Warrior; Charred Marksman). After Fader has been killed, Warriors and Marksmen can also appear at night in other biomes, and before that they form the raid "The undead army marches" (Raids and Events).

The fourth kind, the Charred Warlock, is mostly found inside Charred Fortresses and at the Effigies of Malice in their courtyards. It fires a green fireball every eight seconds that deals pierce, blunt and fire damage and leaves a burning patch where it lands, and every ten seconds it summons green Summoned Twitchers, weaker copies of the ordinary kind, up to ten across all loaded Warlocks. It has 600 health, shares the other Charred's resistances and adds one to frost (Valheim Wiki). The Warrior, Marksman and Warlock trophies can be combined on three vertically stacked item stands to make a decorative piece.

Monuments of Torment are the Charred spawners: charred stone pillars with 400 durability that wake when a player comes within 60 meters and try to spawn something within four meters every ten seconds, a Twitcher five times out of six and a Warrior otherwise. They resist every physical and elemental damage type except pickaxe and chop, so a pickaxe is often the fastest way to bring one down; breaking one drops Grausten or a Charred Skull. A rare Elite monument at the "mysterious locations" that hold Dyrnwyn fragments spawns only two-star Charred (Valheim Wiki).

Charred Health (0★) Main attacks Trophy
Twitcher 220 Scratch 100 slash; thrown rock 75 pierce none
Warrior 600 Swing 150 slash; thrust 160 pierce; feints 5%
Marksman 200 Arrow 90 pierce; volley of 10 × 60 pierce 5%
Warlock 600 Fireball 100 pierce + 20 blunt + 70 fire; summons Twitchers 5%

All four are weak to spirit (×1.5), resist pierce (×0.5), take a quarter damage from fire and are immune to poison. Health doubles at one star and triples at two (Valheim Wiki).

Voltures

Voltures are carrion birds that circle the rock spires on the approach to the biome and roost on the coast. They spawn at sea level in groups, often three or four, and are among the fastest creatures in the game: they can outrun a lightly armored player using Wind Run, and they try to get behind their target. Each has 200 health and a single talon attack of 110 slash damage; they are weak to frost and drop Volture meat, and half the time an egg or feathers, with a 10% chance of a trophy (Valheim Wiki).

Their nests are piles of Asksvin bones. Mining the bones with a pickaxe yields the Asksvin neck, skull, ribcage and pelvis used in the Bone Throne and other furniture (Furniture and Decoration), and underneath lie more Volture eggs, an ingredient of several of the biome's foods (Food and Cooking). Small cave mouths ringed with the same bones are Putrid Holes, the biome's dungeon, each guarded by a buried Morgen.

Lava Blobs

Lava Blobs are the Ashlands cousins of the Swamp's Blobs and Oozers (Swamp Creatures). They slide and leap toward a player in the same way, but instead of a poison cloud they swell and burst: a six-meter explosion of 70 blunt and 30 fire damage that also carves the terrain, triggered whenever the blob faces a target in range and again when it dies. A blob cannot explode until it has turned to face its target, so it visibly rotates first. It has 300 health, is weak to blunt, frost and lightning and immune to fire, and drops one Sulfur and one Proustite Powder, the ingredients of Basalt and Smoke Bombs (Valheim Wiki). The usual advice is to shoot them at range or bait the explosion and dodge through it. 1.0 gave the Lava Blob a trophy it had lacked since release.

Asksvin

The Asksvin, whose Swedish name means "ash swine", is a scaled, lizard-like beast that fills the role the Lox holds in the Plains. Wild Asksvin roam the interior in packs of two or three and charge at anything they see, with a bite, a headbutt and a pounce that closes distance fast. An adult has 800 health, resists fire and poison and is immune to spirit but not to pierce, which makes pierce-and-lightning weapons such as the Himmin Afl unusually good against it. It drops Asksvin hide, tail and bladder, and a trophy one time in ten. Two-star Asksvin spawn only at night (Valheim Wiki).

It is the only tameable creature the update added. Taming follows the rules for boar, wolves and lox (Farming and Taming): the animal must be penned or trapped in a pit, left unalerted, kept within about 64 meters of a player, and fed. Asksvin eat only Smoke Puffs, Vineberry Clusters and Fiddleheads, all gathered in the Ashlands; each item feeds it for ten minutes, and progress runs at 1% every 18 seconds, so an uninterrupted tame takes half an hour. Red-beard Dvergr wandering into the pen will attack the captives.

Tamed Asksvin breed like other animals but lay eggs: a pregnant female produces an Asksvin egg after 90 seconds, and the egg must be dropped, unstacked, within range of a heat source, where it hatches after 30 minutes of uninterrupted warmth into a calf that grows up 50 minutes later. Star levels are inherited, so breeding a two-star pair yields two-star offspring with double the drops.

The Asksvin Saddle, made at the Black Forge from six Flametal, twenty Linen thread and four Morgen sinew (Valheim Wiki), turns a tamed Asksvin into a mount. A ridden Asksvin takes no damage from lava or from the boiling sea, which makes it the safest way to reach Flametal pillars and get back. It runs at a speed of 9 against the Lox's 7; the Deep North Moose introduced in 1.0 is faster still at 12.6 (Sportskeeda). Riding raises the Riding skill and, as with the Lox, weapons cannot be used from the saddle. See Carts, Mounts and Vehicles.

Morgen

The Morgen is the biome's troll: a round-bodied, many-limbed brute that moves by rolling and is far quicker than its size suggests. It has 1,600 health and four attacks: a lunging bite of 160 pierce, a roll to the left or right that deals 50 blunt to players and heavy chop and pickaxe damage to anything built in its way, and swipes of 160 pierce in a wide arc. (A fifth attack, a body slam, exists in the game's data but never plays because of an animator bug.) It resists all three physical damage types and fire, is weak only to lightning, and staggers at 30% of its health, low enough to stun with heavy blows. It drops Morgen sinew, a Morgen heart four times in five and a trophy at 5% (Valheim Wiki). The heart is needed for the Flametal Breastplate (Armor and Capes); the sinew goes into the Asksvin saddle, the Ashen Cape and Asksvin Cloak, the Slayer and Ripper, and the Gem Cutter (Morgen sinew).

Morgen are very rare in the open, with a limit of one in the middle of the biome, and more often met in Ashlands ruins and Putrid Holes, where they start buried in the ground, like a Swamp Abomination, and burst out only after a player has walked in. Those one-off spawns can be starred. A Morgen turns slowly, so staying behind or beside it is much safer than facing it.

Fallen Valkyrie

A Fallen Valkyrie descends on a lone Viking Iron Gate Studio

The Fallen Valkyrie is the biome's second flier and its most dangerous ordinary creature. It hovers over land, periodically flying off to a new spot as if scouting, and, unlike Moder, never lands. From range it spits three projectiles that burst into two-meter pools of fire, each dealing 80 fire and 18 poison; up close it swoops to claw for 105 slash and 55 pierce, or spins for 80 blunt and 140 pierce. It has 1,500 health, cannot be staggered, resists fire, is immune to poison and is weak to spirit, and becomes almost invisible during heat storms. It spawns alone, never starred, with a limit of one, and drops two or three Celestial Feathers, used for the Staff of the Wild, the Dundr and the Feathery Wreath (Magic and Staves), plus a trophy at 5% (Valheim Wiki). Spirit-damage arrows and frost arrows, which slow it for a moment on every hit, are the standard answer; see Bows, Crossbows and Arrows.

Bonemaw Serpent

The Bonemaw Serpent patrols the boiling sea around the biome and is usually the first Ashlands creature a Viking meets. It is a much larger version of the Ocean's Serpent: 1,100 health against 400, immune to fire, spirit and stagger, resistant to poison and weak to frost. Besides the bite of 140 slash it has a ranged attack the Ocean serpent lacks: it dives, rears up out of the water and spits a barrage of three fireballs that deal blunt damage plus burning and poison. It spawns alone and rarely, with a limit of one (Valheim Wiki). It drops six or seven Bonemaw meat and eight or nine Bonemaw teeth, which float, and a trophy a third of the time, which sinks, so the trophy is only recovered by killing it in shallow water or on shore. See Sailing and Ships for the Drakkar that survives these waters.

Skugg

The Skugg is not an animal but a bone ballista, one mounted on each corner of a Charred Fortress. It detects players and tamed creatures up to 40 meters away within a 75-degree cone and fires a bolt of 120 pierce every two seconds. It has 400 health, resists pierce, fire and lightning, and cannot be rebuilt. Destroying one drops bone fragments and a Charred Cogwheel, the part that unlocks the Catapult (Valheim Wiki); since Skuggs only exist on fortresses, every first assault has to be made with the Battering Ram instead.

Neutral and passive life

Not everything in the Ashlands attacks on sight. Red-beard Dvergr keep outposts in the biome, as their kin do in the Mistlands, and stay allied unless a player hits them or breaks their equipment (Mistlands Creatures). Ash crows wheel over the wasteland, and Magmafish swim in the biome's waters and are caught with Hot fishing bait (Fishing; Valheim Wiki). The Charred-summoning miniboss Lord Reto and the boss Fader are covered on the Fader page.

Spawn changes in 1.0

The Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026 rebalanced the biome without adding to it. Its patch notes "reduced chance of multiple enemies spawning together" and "changed the timing of Charred monster spawns", raised the durability of Mistlands and Ashlands equipment, and added a Lava Blob trophy alongside the new Deep North trophies (KeenGamer; Iron Gate on Steam). The change targets density rather than any single creature: the notes leave the creatures' stats and drops as they were, and the Asksvin remains the mount of choice for the lava fields even though the Moose is faster. See Deep North Update (1.0 Patch Notes) for the full notes.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Charred weak to? Spirit damage, at 1.5 times. All four kinds resist pierce, take only a quarter damage from fire and are immune to poison.

Can you tame an Asksvin? Yes, and it is the only tameable creature the Ashlands Update added. Pen or trap it unalerted and feed it Smoke Puffs, Vineberry Clusters or Fiddleheads; progress runs at 1% every 18 seconds, so a clean tame takes half an hour.

What is the toughest creature in the Ashlands? Apart from Fader, the Morgen with 1,600 health and the Fallen Valkyrie with 1,500, which cannot be staggered and never lands.

How do you stop Charred from spawning? Break the Monument of Torment that is making them. The pillars resist every damage type except pickaxe and chop, so a pickaxe is usually the fastest way down.

Did Valheim 1.0 change the Ashlands creatures? Only how thickly they arrive. The patch notes reduced the chance of several enemies spawning together, changed the timing of Charred spawns and gave the Lava Blob a trophy, leaving stats and drops alone.
