Stone Golem

The Stone Golem is the rock giant of Valheim's high Mountain peaks: 800 health, 110-damage slams that also wreck buildings, immune to fire, frost, poison and spirit but very weak to pickaxes. It drops 8 to 11 Crystal for crystal walls, the Crystal Battleaxe and the Crystal Heart.

The Stone Golem is a hulking, snow-covered giant of living rock that lies disguised as a heap of boulders on the highest peaks of the Mountain biome in Valheim, rising to attack anyone who comes close. With 800 health, blows of 110 damage and immunity to fire, frost, poison and spirit, it is the toughest ordinary creature of its biome, yet it has an unusual flaw: it takes double damage from a pickaxe. Its attacks also carry chop and pickaxe damage, so a golem flattens walls and terrain as easily as Vikings. Killing one yields a heap of Crystal and Stone. The biome's other creatures are compared on Mountain Creatures (Stone Golem, Valheim Wiki).

Sledge and spike golems: attacks

Stone Golems come in two equally common builds. The sledge golem has boulder fists: its ground slam raises one arm and brings it down eight meters out, and its double smash raises both, holds a moment and slams them together. The spike golem has a blade-like arm: it leans back and thrusts seven meters straight ahead, or draws the spike back and sweeps it across a 104-degree arc. Every attack deals 110 damage (the thrust as pierce, the rest as blunt) plus 100 chop and 100 pickaxe damage, on eight-second cooldowns, fifteen for the sweep (Stone Golem, Valheim Wiki). A golem throws up to three attacks, then wanders briefly before re-engaging, which gives a few free hits (Aggressive creature strategies, Valheim Wiki).

Where Stone Golems spawn

Golems spawn in the middle of the tall mountains above about 120 meters, one per zone, and occasionally from a spawn point in front of an Abandoned Cabin above 100 meters. Out of combat they look like a cluster of odd, snow-capped rocks, and when a player approaches they heave themselves upright, shaking the screen of anyone nearby. A rare Frost Cave room holds an underground frozen lake with one to three golems on watch, near a runestone and a dead fisherman's rod (Frost Caves, Valheim Wiki; Frost Caves).

Weaknesses and resistances

The golem shrugs off fire, frost, poison and spirit entirely and halves slash and pierce, so swords, axes, spears and arrows all struggle. Blunt and lightning do normal damage, which makes a mace the ordinary choice. Pickaxe damage counts double: Jiroc the Viking climbs onto a golem's head and mines it, jumping to avoid the shockwave of the two-handed slam (Stone Golem, Valheim Wiki; Combat).

How to kill a Stone Golem

The pickaxe method suits a player with little else. Iceberg Gaming fights on flat ground, dodge-rolls through each attack and answers with an Iron Pickaxe; the thrust is easy to read, while the sweep must be dodged later than it looks. In 2021 he found that only a Black Metal shield could block a golem's blows. The wiki notes that pickaxes lose a third of their damage when the swing clips the ground, and that they rule out a shield (Aggressive creature strategies).

The parry method needs a shield. CappuccinoDragon brings a level-four Iron Mace and a Banded Shield, Iron Buckler or Silver Shield, parries the single slam or the spike thrust, and hits during the stagger; the double smash and the sweep are too slow and delayed to time, so he steps away from them. The wiki's favorite combination is the same parry followed by the three-hit combo of an Iron Mace or Porcupine, which can take half a golem's health in one stagger (Parrying and Blocking).

Players whose block skill is too low to parry can use the wander method: hold the shield up through the attacks, then strike while the golem ambles off between bursts. It is slower but reliable.

Two cheaper tricks finish the list. Bonemass's Forsaken Power cuts physical damage taken, and a golem lured to a pit dug with a pickaxe, or dragged in with the Abyssal Harpoon, can never climb out, so the player can mine its head in safety or leave it there, where it blocks other golems from spawning nearby (Forsaken Powers). A good archer with obsidian arrows behind a trench will also win eventually (Aggressive creature strategies).

Stone Golem drops: Crystal and what it makes

Drop Amount Used for
Crystal 8–11 Crystal Wall, Crystal Battleaxe, Crystal Heart, Dvergr lantern
Stone 5–9 Building
Stone Golem Trophy 5% Crystal Heart trinket

Source: Stone Golem and Crystal, Valheim Wiki.

A golem is the richest source of Crystal, which otherwise comes one to three at a time from clusters in the Frost Caves. Crystal Walls are transparent building pieces used as windows (Building and Structural Integrity). The Crystal Battleaxe, forged from 40 Ancient Bark, 30 silver and 10 Crystal at a level-three Forge, is a two-handed axe with 90 slash and 30 spirit damage (Crystal battleaxe, Valheim Wiki; Weapons and Shields). The trophy, with five silver and five Crystal, forges the Crystal Heart, a trinket from the Call to Arms Update that grants 25 per cent resistance to blunt, slash and pierce for 50 seconds once 80 adrenaline has built up; it does not stack with Bonemass's power (Crystal Heart, Valheim Wiki).

Golems, buildings and other creatures

A golem's chop and pickaxe damage makes it a demolition machine against player structures, although it cannot break silver veins or obsidian, so it is no help as a miner. A golem cannot scale a sheer rock face or squeeze along a narrow ledge, which is why players reach their peak-top bases by zig-zag paths. The wiki places them in the Forest faction rather than the Mountain one, so they fight wolves and drakes on sight; Samo notes that a golem and a drake can keep each other busy almost indefinitely, and that a golem trapped in a hole, being immune to frost, is a safe target for training magic with the Staff of Frost (Magic and Staves).

History

Stone Golems have stood on the Mountain since the early-access launch of Feb 2, 2021 (Development History). Their Crystal had no use until the Hearth & Home Update of Sep 16, 2021 added Crystal Walls and the Crystal Battleaxe, and the Call to Arms Update of September 2025 gave the trophy a purpose in the Crystal Heart (Version history, Valheim Wiki). The Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026 listed no change to Stone Golems; the Mountain's 1.0 addition is the Forge of Potential (Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!, Iron Gate).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best weapon against a Stone Golem? A pickaxe does double damage, and a mace such as the Iron Mace does full damage while letting the player carry a shield to parry; swords, axes and arrows do half.

Where do you find Stone Golems? On the highest Mountain peaks above about 120 meters, looking like a pile of rocks, and occasionally by Abandoned Cabins or in Frost Caves.

What does a Stone Golem drop? 8 to 11 Crystal, 5 to 9 Stone and, one time in twenty, the Stone Golem Trophy.

Can Stone Golems destroy your base? Yes. Every attack carries 100 chop and pickaxe damage, so a golem that reaches a base wrecks it; switchback paths and cliffs keep them away.
