Haldor
The Dvergr trader of the Black Forest, who sells the Megingjord, Ymir flesh, fishing gear and eggs for coins, buys valuables, and since Valheim 1.0 sells the Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets inventory upgrades.
Haldor is the first merchant most players meet in Valheim: a Dvergr, or dwarf, in a brown cloak, gold belt and cape, who keeps a camp somewhere in the Black Forest and trades in Coins. He sells a short list of items that cannot be crafted or found anywhere else, including the Megingjord carry-weight belt, the Dverger circlet, Ymir flesh, the fishing rod and, after later bosses fall, eggs and the two inventory expansions added in Valheim 1.0 Release; he also buys the amber, rubies and other valuables that pile up in dungeon chests (Haldor, Valheim Wiki). His sister Hildir runs a clothing stall in the Meadows, and The Bog Witch in the Swamp is the third trader.

Finding Haldor
Every world seed contains ten possible locations for Haldor, all of them in Black Forest at least 1,500 meters from the center of the map. The first of those locations that a player comes near is the one he settles in permanently; the other nine are discarded, and a small bag icon appears on the map (Haldor, Valheim Wiki). The wiki puts the trigger distance at 320 to 453 meters, roughly twice the radius of the default minimap, because it fires when the surrounding zones are generated; guides round it to about 300 meters, which means a player can register Haldor without ever seeing his camp (Trader, Valheim Wiki (weirdgloop)).
Of the three traders Haldor has by far the widest range: anywhere from 1,500 meters out to the edge of the world, except the far north and south where only the Deep North and Ashlands lie. Hildir spawns only between 3,000 and 5,100 meters, and the Bog Witch between 3,000 and about 6,500 meters, so Haldor is usually the closest to the starting island. He never appears on the central island itself, which is why finding him almost always means a boat (Sailing and Ships).
Because the map icon fires at long range and Valheim's landmasses tend to be long and thin, the standard advice is to sail close along the coasts of Black Forest islands rather than walk their interiors, carrying portal materials so the camp can be linked to home the moment it is found (Portals). Haldor is often found by accident while hunting for Burial Chambers or The Elder's altar, since all three share the biome (World Map, Generation and Seeds).
Players who would rather not search can use a seed map, which plots all ten candidate positions, or pick a seed known for its traders; the caveat is that approaching any other candidate first cancels the one they wanted (SnazzyGames, The BEST Valheim Seeds).
The camp
Haldor's camp is a large wooden wagon with a propped-up canopy, barrels, tables and a campfire, decorated with spears, swords, shields, helmets and food. The wagon is pulled by a tamed lox named Halstein, who lies feeding from a bowl beside it. A shimmering, transparent dome surrounds the whole camp: hostile creatures cannot enter it, players can, and it cannot be destroyed, so the camp doubles as a safe zone in a biome full of greydwarfs and trolls (Haldor, Valheim Wiki; Meadows and Black Forest Creatures). The protection stops at the dome's edge, however, and a portal placed outside it needs walls or stakes of its own.
Haldor can be talked to at any hour, and his lines mix salesmanship ("Commerce is the only thing that separates us from the beasts") with bleak commentary on Valheim ("Fight, build, explore. It all ends in the grave"). He calls himself "short for a dwarf", complains that "mining is just so boring", and says the fancy stuff is "my sister's area of expertise" (Haldor, Valheim Wiki; Lore and Setting).
Coins and selling
Trading with Haldor uses Coins, which weigh 0.1 each, stack to 999 and pass through portals. They come from chests, above all in dungeons such as Burial Chambers, Troll Caves and Sunken Crypts, and as drops from trolls, Fulings and Dvergr (Coins, Valheim Wiki (weirdgloop)). The other route is to sell him valuables. The sell button empties every valuable in the inventory in one go, with no way to pick and choose, so anything a player wants to keep has to be dropped first.
| Valuable | Coins each | Stack | Coins per stack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amber | 5 | 20 | 100 |
| Amber pearl | 10 | 50 | 500 |
| Ruby | 20 | 20 | 400 |
| Silver necklace | 30 | 20 | 600 |
Source: Trader, Valheim Wiki (weirdgloop). All three traders pay the same prices and accept every valuable, and sold items cannot be bought back.
In the bronze age the reliable way to raise the 950 coins for the belt is to clear Burial Chambers, whose chests hold both coins and amber. Later biomes are richer: Fuling villages in the Plains drop coins directly, and the Mistlands Dvergr carry them too.
Valheim 1.0 added a new tier of valuables in the Deep North. The Gates of Mörkhalla dungeon holds ancient coins and four gems, which can be pickaxed off its walls, looted from chests or dropped by its imprisoned Fulings, and whose only purpose is sale to a trader. Launch-week guides list the gems as Solryth, Grimvarn, Veydris and Draumyx, at roughly 95, 55, 135 and 175 coins each, with ancient coins at 10 apiece (SnazzyGames, Valheim 1.0 overview; Kysen, Deep North Full Guide); the wikis had not yet documented their prices as of Sep 11, 2026.
What Haldor sells
His stock starts small and grows with world progression: some items are always listed, others appear only after a particular Forsaken boss has been killed in that world. Purchases are unlimited except for the two 1.0 pocket upgrades, which each character can buy once (Haldor, Valheim Wiki).

Megingjord
The Megingjord is the item most players come for. Named after Megingjörð, the belt of Thor, it "gives the wearer superhuman strength" and raises the carry limit from 300 to 450. It weighs 2, gives no armor and occupies the accessory slot, so it cannot be worn together with the Wishbone from Bonemass or the Wisplight of the Mistlands, a trade-off that shapes silver mining in the Mountain and every trip into the mist (Megingjord, Valheim Wiki (weirdgloop)). The 1.0 pocket upgrades add slots but not weight, so the belt has kept its place.
Dverger circlet and Yule hat
The Dverger circlet, "a portable perpetual lightsource for the dungeon explorer", casts a cone of light wherever the wearer looks, never runs out and gives 2 armor, at the cost of the helmet slot and of any sneak bonus. On an item stand it becomes a lamp that needs no fuel (Dverger circlet, Valheim Wiki (weirdgloop); Furniture and Decoration). The Yule hat, "a red cap in the style of house gnomes", is a joke item with 1 armor (Armor and Capes).
Fishing gear
Haldor is effectively the only source of the fishing rod: the one alternative is a pickable rod beside the frozen lake in a rare Frost Cave room. His basic bait catches perch and pike in the Meadows and Black Forest, and twenty of it combined with a creature trophy at a food preparation table makes the advanced baits for every other biome, down to the Frosty bait for the Deep North's Northern salmon (Bait, Valheim Wiki (weirdgloop); Fishing).
Ymir flesh and Thunder stone
Ymir flesh, "the earthy remains of the giant Ymir", is a crafting material for two iron-age weapons, the Iron sledge and the frost hammer Frostner (Weapons and Shields). It unlocks once the Elder is dead; before patch 0.213.4 it required Bonemass instead (Ymir flesh, Valheim Wiki (weirdgloop)). The Thunder stone, "crackling with energy", weighs 10 and is the key ingredient of the Obliterator, the lightning-powered bin introduced in the Hearth & Home Update that destroys unwanted items (Thunder stone, Valheim Wiki (weirdgloop)).
Eggs
After Yagluth falls Haldor adds eggs at 1,500 coins each. Placed under shelter within range of a fire, an egg hatches into a chicken after thirty minutes of warmth, and two are needed to start a flock; hens then lay eggs of their own, and an egg can also be found in the Sealed Tower dungeon of the Mistlands Update (Egg, Valheim Wiki (weirdgloop); Farming and Taming).
Barrel hoops
The Bog Witch Update of October 2024 gave Haldor barrel hoops, three for 100 coins, "perfectly round, suitable for holding a barrel together. Just add wood!" They are the metal part of the Barrel storage piece (Barrel hoops, Valheim Wiki (weirdgloop)).
The 1.0 pocket upgrades
"Upgradeable pockets" was a headline item in Iron Gate's 1.0 notes, and the answer to the most requested quality-of-life change of early access: a bigger inventory (Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!, Iron Gate). The two upgrades are sold by Haldor. Wider Pockets, 1,000 coins, appears after Moder is defeated; Deeper Pockets, 2,000 coins, after The Queen. Each adds a permanent row of eight slots, taking the 8Ă—4 grid of 32 slots (the top row being the hotbar) to 8Ă—6 and 48 (Inventory, Valheim Wiki (weirdgloop); KeenGamer, How to Increase Your Inventory Space).
The purchase is per character rather than per world, can be made once, and does nothing to carry weight, which still needs the Megingjord or the Mead of Troll Endurance (Mead and Potions). Guides recommend buying both before the Deep North, whose dungeons demand "several inventory fulls" of loot (Kysen, Deep North Full Guide). The upgrades are why Haldor, a Black Forest character, stays relevant to the endgame, where the Forge of Potential and the Deep North's own stations otherwise replace him (Crafting Stations and Upgrades). Haldor and Hildir
Haldor was Valheim's only trader from the early-access launch of February 2021 until the Hildir's Request Update of August 2023 introduced his sister Hildir, "a merchant who has run into troubles with missing stock" and who deals solely in fashion (PCGamesN, Hildir's Request patch notes). She spawns in the Meadows by the same ten-location rule, keeps two lox of her own, and is found by the same coastal sailing. The Bog Witch followed in October 2024. Haldor's remark that he comes "from a family of entrepreneurs" is the only in-game acknowledgement of the relationship.
History of the stock
Haldor's inventory has grown with almost every major update. The Yule hat, circlet, Megingjord, Ymir flesh and fishing rod were in his wagon in February 2021 (Kysen, How To Find + Use The Trader, recorded Feb 23, 2021); the Hearth & Home Update (September 2021) added the Thunder stone; the Mistlands update (December 2022) reworked fishing around purchasable bait, added the egg and moved Ymir flesh from a Bonemass unlock to an Elder unlock; the Bog Witch update (October 2024) added barrel hoops; and 1.0 (Sep 9, 2026) added Wider and Deeper Pockets. The name Haldor is Old Norse, glossed by the wiki as "Thor's rock", and "Dvergr" is the Old Norse word for dwarf (Haldor, Valheim Wiki).
Frequently asked questions
Where do you find Haldor in Valheim? In a Black Forest at least 1,500 meters from the center of the map, never on the starting island. Every seed holds ten possible camps and the first a player approaches becomes the real one, so the usual method is to sail along Black Forest coasts and watch for the bag icon, which appears from roughly 300 meters away.
How do you get Coins in Valheim? From chests, above all in Burial Chambers, Troll Caves and Sunken Crypts, from troll, Fuling and Dvergr drops, and by selling valuables to a trader. Amber is worth 5, an amber pearl 10, a ruby 20 and a silver necklace 30.
How much does the Megingjord cost? 950 Coins. It raises the carry limit from 300 to 450, weighs 2 and gives no armor, and because it sits in the accessory slot it cannot be worn with the Wishbone or the Wisplight.
What does Haldor sell? The Yule hat, Dverger circlet, Megingjord, fishing rod, fishing bait and barrel hoops at all times, then Ymir flesh and the Thunder stone once The Elder is dead, eggs after Yagluth, and the two 1.0 pocket upgrades after Moder and The Queen.
How do you get more inventory space in Valheim? Buy Wider Pockets from Haldor for 1,000 coins once Moder is dead and Deeper Pockets for 2,000 once The Queen is. Each adds a permanent row of eight slots, taking the grid from 32 to 48, and each can be bought once per character rather than once per world.
