Console Commands, Cheats and Mods
Valheim's developer console: enabling it, devcommands and debug mode, the commands people actually use, the ones added in 1.0, how cheating flags a save against achievements and the hotfix that undoes it, plus BepInEx, Thunderstore and Iron Gate's stance on mods.
The developer console is Valheim's built-in command line, opened in-game and used for server administration, for debugging and, once devcommands is entered, for cheating: flying, spawning items and creatures, changing the weather, teleporting and building without materials. It exists on every platform, and since patch 0.221.4 of September 2025 it is switched on from a gameplay setting rather than a launch argument (Iron Gate). Mods are a separate thing: unofficial, PC-only, and loaded by a community tool rather than by the game.
Quick facts
| Enable the console | Settings, gameplay tab; the -console launch argument overrides it |
| Open the console | F5 on PC; L1 + L2 + Options on PS5; LB + LT + RB + RT + Menu on Xbox |
| Enable cheats | devcommands, then confirm; the same command turns them off |
| Works on | Single-player and in-game hosted worlds, not a dedicated server |
| Achievements | Most commands permanently flag the character and world; freefly is an exception |
| Undo the flag | The 1.0.12 devcommand yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway |
| Official mod support | None, on any platform, and no Steam Workshop |
| Mod loader | BepInEx, from Thunderstore and Nexus Mods |

How to enable cheats in Valheim
With the console open, devcommands turns cheats on and answers with the new state, devcommands true. Since 1.0 a confirmation is required (the console asks for confirmcheats) so that nobody marks a save as cheated by accident. The command has carried that name since patch 0.148.6 of March 2021, when it replaced imacheater (Iron Gate).
debugmode adds keyboard shortcuts: K kills nearby enemies, B is free building, L clears item drops, Z flies with space and control for height, and Ctrl with a middle click on the map teleports. Console players reach the same things by name: killenemies, nocost, removedrops, fly (Developer console, Valheim Wiki).

spawn is the one people come for, and the one that catches them out: an internal name is often not the name on the item, so Bloodstone is GemstoneRed. The console autocompletes with Tab, which is the only practical way to find an id.
forcedelete is the dangerous one. It removes everything in a radius (trees, ore and any build pieces standing there) and a careless radius can take a base with it. It is also one of the few ways to clear the mist of the Mistlands from one spot, because that mist is an object rather than weather.
The commands added in 1.0
The Valheim 1.0 Release came with a batch of new commands, listed in the patch notes as confirmcheats, achievements, getstat, haslocation, snow, updatecover, cinematic, cinematicsleep, inventorysize, inventoryclean, clearpopups, height, pevents, repairall, resetbuildui, biomeinfo, altbiomes, findbiome and findbiometp, their descriptions in the console's own help output (1.0 patch notes).
Two are worth knowing. inventorysize sets how many rows the inventory has, the same thing Haldor now sells as Deeper and Wider Pockets, and it works downwards too. findbiome and findbiometp search for a biome by name, which is how players hunt the alternate edge biomes 1.0 added.
Cheats, achievements and the opt-in command
Valheim gained achievements at 1.0 (53 on Steam) and a lock to go with them. Tracking starts the moment 1.0 is installed, so old deeds do not count, and "using most commands (such as 'spawn') will place a flag on your current character and world save, informing you that it is permanently locked from getting any achievements". Characters that cheated before 1.0 are marked the same way; camera-only commands such as freefly are exceptions (Iron Gate 1.0 FAQ).
Spawned items carry the flag. They are labeled "cheated item" in the inventory, and a clean character that picks one up enters a temporary cheat state, recovering eligibility by throwing every cheated item away (allthings.how). Hammer mode counts as a temporary cheat in the same way; see World Modifiers.
Two days after launch the studio relented. Patch 1.0.12 added a devcommand that re-enables achievements for a character that has used commands or mods, spelled out as yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway, with a note: "We will leave it to your own judgement whether or not to activate this function – Oden will surely know if you use it dishonourably" (Hotfix 1.0.10 & 1.0.12; PC Gamer).
The flag kept misfiring, and the next patches went after it. Patch 1.0.14 of Sep 17, 2026 fixed characters being wrongly marked as temporary cheaters, which had made the loot of the monsters they killed count as cheated, stopped cheated items stacking with clean ones (which had turned whole stacks cheated), and put the pevents command behind devcommands. Patch 1.0.15 a day later stopped marking items affected by dev commands for characters that have enabled what its notes call "the dev bypass command", renamed such items, and let them stack together again. For items still wrongly marked as cheated, Iron Gate promised a fix that has to ship on every platform at once so as not to break cross-play, and told players they could keep using such items normally until then; the notes of patches 1.0.16 and 1.0.17 do not mention it (Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.14; Iron Gate, Patch 1.0.15; Patches Since 1.0). The full list is on Achievements.
Mods: BepInEx and Thunderstore
Valheim has no official modding interface, so the community built one. Nearly every mod and modpack, client or server, loads through BepInEx, a few libraries dropped into the game folder that hook the game at startup and open a second window showing which plugins loaded and which failed.
Installing it by hand means closing the game, extracting the BepInEx pack into the folder behind Steam's Browse local files, and starting again; mods are zip files whose contents go into BepInEx/plugins, each writing its own file in BepInEx/config. Linux players launch start_game_bepinex.sh instead of the executable.
Most players use a manager. r2modman installs BepInEx and any mod with its dependencies, keeps profiles and edits configs in place, and Thunderstore's pages install into it in one click. Thunderstore's Valheim community opened on Feb 14, 2021, twelve days after the early-access launch, and by September 2026 held 11,522 packages with over 163 million downloads (Thunderstore). Nexus Mods hosts a large Valheim section too.
A dedicated server is modded the same way: the same files go into the server folder, plugins into its plugins folder, and the start script reports them as it boots. Whether a mod belongs on the client, the server or both is up to its author, and one put in the wrong place does nothing.
Mods, consoles and version breaks
Console players are shut out. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ is explicit: "since we have no mod support on PC, there will also be no mod support for consoles for 1.0, and there will be no Steam Workshop featured". The rule of thumb for mixed groups is that server-side mods usually still admit console players, while client-side mods that add assets or interface elements lock them out (Cross-Play).
Every large patch breaks mods, and 1.0 broke almost all of them at once: it upgraded the Unity engine, and with no public test branch, no author had a build to test against before release day. The BepInEx pack itself was ready (version 5.4.2350 went up at 12:30 UTC on Sep 9, 2026, minutes before the game went live (Thunderstore)) but plugins trickled in over the following days. The advice on patch day is to play the first session unmodded and add mods back one at a time.
The mods most often recommended are quality-of-life rather than cheats: crafting from nearby containers, a clock, a compass, extra inventory slots, an adjustable hoe radius and smoother ladders.
Iron Gate's stance on mods
Iron Gate has never supported mods officially, and said so again for 1.0: "Since we don't have any official mod support, we cannot guarantee that any mods will be functional when 1.0 releases" (1.0 FAQ). Its one statement of policy, "Regarding Mods" of May 2023, is friendly but firm: modding is "done at your own risk"; the studio "does not condone locking modded content behind a paywall"; and it asks that mods identify themselves as unofficial, using the pop-up the game provides, because joining a modded server can pull a mod down automatically (Iron Gate).
Frequently asked questions
How do you enable console commands in Valheim? Turn the developer console on in the settings, open it with F5 or the platform's controller combination, and type devcommands to unlock cheats. On Steam the -console launch argument still overrides the setting.
Do console commands disable achievements? Yes, most of them, permanently for that character and world. freefly is an exception, and since patch 1.0.12 the devcommand yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway turns achievements back on.
Do console commands work on a dedicated server? Only the admin ones: kicking, banning, saving and setting world modifiers. Cheats such as spawn work in single-player or a world hosted from inside the game.
Does Valheim support mods? Not officially, and there is no Steam Workshop. Mods are community-made, PC-only, and installed through BepInEx from Thunderstore or Nexus Mods.
Will my mods work in Valheim 1.0? Only once their authors rebuild them. The 1.0 engine upgrade broke most plugins on release day, and there was no public test branch beforehand.
