Skills

Valheim's skills rise from 0 to 100 through use, with no points to spend. Twenty-four of them cover weapons, movement, gathering, magic, cooking, farming and crafting; each level adds power or trims stamina, and death drains five per cent of every one.

Skills are the only character progression in Valheim that lives on the Viking rather than in a chest. There is no experience bar, level or talent tree; each activity has its own skill that climbs from 0 to 100 through use, and every level makes that activity stronger, cheaper in stamina or both (Wikipedia, Valheim). The system is deliberately modest, because Iron Gate Studio wanted gear and Food and Cooking to carry most of a character's power, but it is also the one thing death takes away, which makes it the most talked-about number on the character screen.

Quick facts

What they are Per-activity skills that climb from 0 to 100 through use, with no points to spend
Number Twenty-four in 1.0
Trained by Doing the thing: each hit landed, jump, second of running or sneaking, craft or harvest
Experience curve (current level + 1)^1.5 ÷ 2 + 0.5 to the next level, about 20,300 experience to reach 100
Multiplier The Rested effect raises all skill experience by 50 per cent
At level 100 About +141% average weapon damage and a third less stamina; Bows also draw 80% faster
Death penalty Every skill drops 5 per cent of its level on default settings, then No Skill Drain for ten minutes
Newest skill Dodge, added by the Call to Arms Update of September 2025

How skills level

Every skill gains experience from its own trigger and nothing else: landing an axe blow on a creature trains Axes, blocking an attack trains Blocking, seconds spent swimming train Swimming. The amounts are small fixed numbers (most melee hits give 1.5 experience, a jump 0.5, a second of running 0.2) and a level is reached when enough of them accumulate (Valheim Wiki, Skills). The requirement grows with the level: experience to the next level = (current level + 1)^1.5 ÷ 2 + 0.5, so level 1 costs a single point, level 50 about 177 and level 100 about 500, for a total of roughly 20,300 experience to max any one skill. Surplus experience does not carry over, and once a skill reaches 100 it stops gaining.

The one multiplier that matters is the Rested effect, which raises all skill experience by 50 per cent for actions the player performs (the exception is Blood magic, where a summoned skeleton's hits are counted on the skeleton's own rested state). Rested also speeds stamina regeneration, the real limit on how many swings, jumps or seconds of sneaking fit into a session; see Rested, Comfort and Sleeping for how the buff is built.

The skills

The Valheim wiki lists twenty-four skills in 1.0. Most effects scale linearly; weapon damage rises about 1.5 per cent per level to 75 and then more slowly, so that a level-100 weapon skill deals roughly 2.4 times its level-0 minimum damage and about 140 per cent more on average (Valheim Wiki, Skills).

Weapon and combat skills

Each weapon class has its own skill, so changing class means starting from that class's own level. Melee skills raise damage and knockback and cut stamina use by a third at level 100; Spears are the fastest to train, at 2.25 experience per primary hit against 1.5 for the rest. Bows is widely considered the most valuable skill in the game, because on top of the damage bonus it shortens draw time by up to 80 per cent, which the wiki works out as more than seven times the damage per second at level 100 compared with level 0 (Valheim Wiki, Skills; see Bows, Crossbows and Arrows).

Blocking gains half a point per blocked attack and a full point for a parry, and adds up to 50 per cent block armor. Sneaking trains by the second while crouched, far faster when a creature is nearby and has not noticed the player, and at 100 cuts both the stamina drain and the distance at which enemies see a crouched Viking (Combat covers the visibility meter).

Skill Trained by At level 100
Axes, Clubs, Swords, Knives, Polearms, Fists Hitting a creature (1.5 XP per hit; two-handed clubs 1) +141% average damage and knockback, -33% stamina
Spears Hitting a creature (2.25 XP primary, 1.5 secondary) +141% damage, -33% stamina
Bows Each arrow that hits (1.5 XP) +141% damage, -33% stamina, -80% draw time
Crossbows Each bolt that hits (1 XP) +141% damage, -50% reload time
Blocking 0.5 XP per block, +0.5 for a parry +50% block armor
Dodge 0.025 XP per roll, +0.25 if an attack is dodged -50% dodge stamina
Sneaking 0.05 XP per second, +0.45 near an unaware creature -60% base visibility, -75% stamina
Elemental magic Staff hits (1 XP for Embers and Wild, 0.2 for Frost) +141% damage, -33% eitr
Blood magic Summons hitting creatures (0.75), shields breaking (1) +200% damage, +250% protection, -33% eitr and health cost

Movement, gathering and magic

Running, Riding and Swimming are timed skills that tick every second the action is performed, whether or not the Viking gets anywhere. Running at 100 is 25 per cent faster and half as thirsty for stamina; Jumping gains half a point per jump and doubles jump height. Riding applies to every mount, including the Moose of the Deep North, the fastest in the game (Carts, Mounts and Vehicles).

Wood cutting and Pickaxes train on trees and rock respectively and only raise damage against them. Fishing, a skill since the Mistlands Update, gains a quarter point per second while reeling and another quarter with a fish on the line; at 100 it reels three times as fast for a fifth of the stamina. Guides call it the slowest skill to max; the Fishing Hat sold by Haldor helps, adding 20 levels to both Fishing and Swimming while worn (Valheim Wiki, Fishing hat; see Fishing).

The two magic skills came with the Mistlands. Elemental magic covers the fire, frost and lightning staves and levels much like a weapon; Blood magic covers the Dead Raiser and protective staves and is trained not by the caster but by what the caster summons, so its experience arrives whenever a skeleton lands a hit or a shield breaks under damage (Magic and Staves).

Skill Trained by At level 100
Running 0.2 XP per second running +25% speed, -50% stamina
Jumping 0.5 XP per jump +40% jump force (about double the height)
Swimming 0.3 XP per second -50% stamina
Riding 0.2 XP per second sprinting on a mount +25% sprint speed, -50% mount stamina
Wood cutting 1 XP per hit on a tree +141% damage to trees
Pickaxes 1.5 XP per hit on stone or ore +141% damage, -33% stamina
Fishing 0.25 XP per second reeling, +0.25 with a fish hooked +200% reel speed, -80% stamina

Cooking, Farming and Crafting

Three skills for peaceful work arrived with The Bog Witch Update (patch 0.219.13, October 2024). Cooking shortens the time to make food and mead bases and gives a growing chance of an extra portion; Farming reduces the stamina cost and wear of the Cultivator and gives a chance of bonus crops when harvesting; Crafting shortens crafting time, extends the durability of tools such as the Hammer and reduces the stamina cost of placing building pieces (Steam news, Patch 0.219.13; EIP Gaming). Hildir's Harvester clothing, added in the same patch, raises Farming while worn.

Farming is trained a quarter point at a time by planting, harvesting by hand, cultivating and using the Scythe, and the bonus-yield chance belongs to whoever harvests, not whoever planted. Guides measure it at roughly 7 per cent per plant at level 25 and about 27 per cent at 100 (see Farming and Taming). Yagluth's Forsaken Power, rewritten in 2025, adds 25 levels of Farming while active (Game Rant, Call to Arms patch notes).

Cooking awards 0.25 experience per recipe at a Cauldron, Food Preparation Table or Mead Ketill, 0.1 for placing an item on a cooking station or oven and 0.15 for taking it off, so a loaf of bread is worth about half a point from field to plate. Crafting earns a quarter point per craft, per placed build piece and for repairs in proportion to the durability restored, with a hidden counter that withholds experience from the next builds after pieces are deconstructed (Valheim Wiki, Skills; see Mead and Potions and Building and Structural Integrity).

Skill Trained by At level 100
Cooking 0.25 per recipe, 0.1 placing on a station, 0.15 collecting -60% food crafting time, 25% chance of an extra craft, -50% Serving Tray stamina
Farming 0.25 per plant, hand harvest, Cultivator or Scythe use 25% chance of extra harvest, +1 m Scythe range, -50% Cultivator stamina and wear
Crafting 0.25 per craft, 0.25 per build piece, up to 0.25 per repair -60% crafting time, 25% chance of an extra craft, -50% Hammer stamina and wear

The Dodge skill and the perfect dodge roll

The Call to Arms Update of September 2025 (patch 0.221.4) added the game's newest skill under the name Perfect Dodge Roll: a roll that evades an attack which would otherwise have landed now returns a percentage of the stamina it cost, and the same patch made perfect blocks free of stamina (DSOGaming, patch 0.221.4 notes). The skill itself is listed as Dodge: an ordinary roll gives almost nothing (0.025), a roll that actually dodges an attack gives ten times as much, and at level 100 rolling costs half the stamina (Valheim Wiki, Skills). Perfect dodges and perfect blocks also fill the adrenaline bar that drives the update's trinkets.

Skill loss on death

Dying is the only way to lose skill. On default settings every skill drops by 5 per cent of its level and progress toward the next level is wiped, so Swords at 50 respawns at 47.5. A No Skill Drain status effect then runs for ten minutes, long enough for a corpse run, during which further deaths cost nothing (Valheim Wiki, Skills). See Death and Corpse Runs for the rest of the penalty.

The size of the drain is the Death Penalty setting under World Modifiers. Casual and Very Easy reduce it to 1 per cent (Casual also keeps equipped gear on the body), Easy to 2.5 per cent, Normal is 5, Hard is 7.5 and Hardcore sets it to 100 per cent, erasing every skill on death (Valheim Wiki, World Modifiers). The 1.0 patch notes make no mention of these values.

The penalty has been argued over since early access. In a June 2025 Q&A recap recorded after two Iron Gate Studio developers visited the YouTuber Jade PG, the closing segment on skill loss calls the drain "too much of a punishment" while conceding that skills "were meant to be just to aid you a little bit", with food, armor and weapons meant to matter more.

Other ways to change a skill

Several items raise a skill while worn or while a trinket is triggered: the Fishing Hat (+20 Fishing and Swimming), the Wolf Sight trinket (+20 Bows and Spears), the Bracelets of the Brave (+20 Clubs) and the Evasion Mantle (+20 Dodge), while the Troll Leather, Root and Harvester sets carry set bonuses to Sneaking, Bows and Farming respectively (Valheim Wiki, Wolf Sight; Bracelets of the Brave; see Armor and Capes). On worlds with cheats enabled, the console commands raiseskill <skill> <amount> and resetskill <skill> set levels directly (capped at 100), at the cost of flagging the save as cheated for the achievements introduced in 1.0 (Console Commands, Cheats and Mods).

History

The early-access launch build had the weapon, movement and gathering skills. The Hearth & Home Update of September 2021 added Riding with Lox saddles; the Mistlands Update of December 2022 added Fishing, Crossbows, Elemental magic and Blood magic; The Bog Witch added Cooking, Farming and Crafting in October 2024; and Call to Arms added Dodge in September 2025. The Valheim 1.0 Release on Sep 9, 2026 added no new skill and its launch notes list no change to the system.

Frequently asked questions

How do you level up skills in Valheim? By using them, and only by using them: every skill gains experience from its own trigger, in small fixed amounts such as 1.5 for a melee hit or 0.2 for a second of running. The Rested effect adds 50 per cent to all of it, so resting before a session is the one general way to level faster.

What happens to your skills when you die? Every skill drops by 5 per cent of its level and progress toward the next level is wiped, so Swords at 50 respawns at 47.5. A No Skill Drain status effect then runs for ten minutes, long enough for a corpse run. The Death Penalty world modifier changes the size of the drain, from 1 per cent on Casual to 100 per cent on Hardcore.

Which skill is the most useful? Bows is widely considered the most valuable, because on top of the damage bonus it shortens draw time by up to 80 per cent, which the wiki works out as more than seven times the damage per second at level 100 compared with level 0.

How many skills does Valheim have? Twenty-four in 1.0, covering weapons, blocking, dodging, sneaking, movement, wood cutting, pickaxes, fishing, the two magic schools and the three peaceful skills, Cooking, Farming and Crafting.

Can you raise a skill without grinding it? Several items add levels while worn or triggered: the Fishing Hat (+20 Fishing and Swimming), the Wolf Sight trinket (+20 Bows and Spears), the Bracelets of the Brave (+20 Clubs) and the Evasion Mantle (+20 Dodge), while Yagluth's Forsaken Power adds 25 levels of Farming. The console command raiseskill sets a level directly but flags the save as cheated.
