Abomination
The Abomination is a walking tangle of roots in Valheim's Swamp that hides as a mossy stump: 800 health, three slams that also wreck buildings, weak to fire and immune to frost, poison and spirit. It drops five Root for the Root armor set and the Arbalest, plus Guck and a trophy.
The Abomination is a giant, tree-like undead creature of the Swamp biome in Valheim that lies disguised as a mossy stump until a Viking wanders close, then heaves itself up on four root legs to attack. With 800 health and slams that hit a wide area, it is the heaviest regular enemy of the Swamp, and its chop and pickaxe damage let it tear down walls and terrain. Fire is its weakness, while frost, poison and spirit do nothing to it. It is also the only source of Root, the material of the light Root armor set and the Arbalest crossbow. The Swamp's other inhabitants are compared on Swamp Creatures (Abomination, Valheim Wiki).

Abomination attacks
An Abomination has three attacks. The swing sweeps its right branch across a long, narrow arc for 60 blunt when the player is 2.5 to 6 meters away, every seven seconds; the slam raises its left branch and pounds it down, hitting everything within 4.3 meters of the impact every eight seconds; and the ground slam drops its whole body, hitting 5.4 meters around it every six seconds but only when the player is within three meters. The two branch attacks cannot reach a player pressed against its center, which leaves only the ground slam (Abomination, Valheim Wiki). Quicksand Riggs measured the right swing at about 55 damage on a player with no armor and the left slam and ground slam at about 75, falling to about 30 and 45 in bronze armor; he found the right swing much the easiest to parry and the body slam hard to escape once caught underneath.
Its reach is about six meters, and on top of the blunt damage every attack carries 100 chop and 60 pickaxe, which lets it knock down walls and gouge the ground within that radius. Quicksand Riggs found that a trench four meters deep nullifies every attack: an Abomination in a ditch that deep cannot hit anything at its edge (Building and Structural Integrity).
Where Abominations spawn
An Abomination can spawn anywhere in the Swamp, but at most one per zone, and after one is killed its zone stays empty for 4,000 seconds, about 66 minutes. Few spots meet the rules, so they seem to return to the same places. At rest one passes for a leaning, moss-covered stump in open water or among reeds, and the green Swamp gas drifting off it gives it away. The high side of the lean is its front: it stands up whenever a player comes within a set radius, whichever way it faces, but only targets someone it has seen, so approaching from the low side sets up a sneak attack, as long as the player does not wade deep enough to lose stealth (Abomination, Valheim Wiki).
Weaknesses and resistances
The Abomination is immune to poison and spirit, so the spirit damage of silver weapons is wasted on it. Blunt weapons do half damage and piercing ones only a quarter, which makes maces and plain arrows slow work, while slash and lightning do normal damage and fire does extra. The wiki lists it as immune to frost; Quicksand Riggs saw the frost slow flicker on it but found it too weak to matter (Abomination, Valheim Wiki; Combat).
How to kill an Abomination
In melee the answer is a shield and a slashing weapon. Kysen finds that frost arrows barely scratch it and fire arrows burn it but slowly, then parries a swing and cuts in with a sword, concluding that a sword is the weapon to carry into the Swamp. The wiki adds that a Banded Shield or better can parry its attacks, and that a tank with an iron tower shield and an axe can block every blow from beside the right leg, the side of the lighter attack.
NickRawcliffe shows how long a parried Abomination stays stunned: with a buckler and a sword, the sword's secondary attack deals heavy damage during the stagger, and a fresh character in level-one iron armor kills one easily the same way (Parrying and Blocking).
Players without the timing use fire, and Quicksand Riggs ranks three methods. Kiting it with fire arrows, or shooting from a fallen tree it cannot climb, is safe but slow; the burning still ticks in the rain. Bonfires, which unlike campfires stay lit in the Swamp's rain, burn a kited Abomination for about 25 damage a tick, as long as it keeps chasing the player rather than smashing the fire.
Best of all are the Swamp's indestructible fire geysers, which burn for about 35 a tick; parrying the Abomination while it stands in the flames lets the burning land as critical hits.
Terrain gives a cheaper win. x Topher x places a Workbench, uses it to jump onto the roof of a Sunken Crypt, where an Abomination can neither reach nor break anything, and lights bonfires in its path; indestructible fallen trees serve the same purpose, and the wiki notes that Abominations get stuck in deep ditches (Sunken Crypts).
Abomination drops
Each kill yields exactly five Root, three or four Guck and an even chance of the trophy. Picking up the first Root unlocks the Root armor recipes. If it dies in deep water the Guck sinks, while the Root and the trophy float (Abomination, Valheim Wiki).
| Drop | Amount | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Root | 5 | Root Mask, Root Harnesk, Root Leggings, Arbalest |
| Guck | 3–4 | Draugr Fang, green banners and fireworks, fuel for the green-burning iron torch |
| Abomination Trophy | 50% | Sticky Fishing Bait (Giant Herring) |

The Root set is made at a level-two Workbench from 10 Root and 10 Ancient Bark per piece, with 4 Leather Scraps for the mask and 2 Deer Hide each for the harnesk and leggings. Each piece gives 8 armor, rising to 14 at quality four, and the set costs only 4 per cent movement speed. The mask resists poison and the harnesk pierce, every piece makes the wearer weak to fire, and the full set adds +15 to the Bows skill, which is why it is the Swamp's archer armor and remains useful against the pierce attacks of the Plains (Root Set, Valheim Wiki; Armor and Capes). Crafting and fully upgrading all three pieces takes 66 Root, or 14 Abominations.
Root also goes into the Arbalest, the first crossbow of the Mistlands, at 4 Root with wood and iron (Arbalest, Valheim Wiki; Bows, Crossbows and Arrows). Guck, otherwise mined from sacks high in Swamp trees, is needed ten at a time for the Draugr Fang bow. The trophy makes Sticky Fishing Bait for Giant Herring (Fishing).
History
The Abomination was not in the game at the early-access launch of February 2021 (Development History). Patch 0.205.5 of Nov 25, 2021 introduced it with the announcement that something stirred in the Swamps, together with the Root armor set (Development Blog November, Iron Gate on Steam). Patch 0.206.5 of Dec 14, 2021 added the Guck drop, raised the spawn chance from 25 to 35 per cent while cutting the cap from two per zone to one, and shortened its stagger from 5.5 to 3 seconds (Version history, Valheim Wiki). The Mistlands Update of December 2022 gave Root its second use in the Arbalest. The Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026 listed no change to Abominations (Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!, Iron Gate).
Frequently asked questions
What is the Abomination weak to in Valheim? Fire. Fire arrows, bonfires and the Swamp's fire geysers all work; slash weapons do normal damage, while blunt and pierce are resisted and frost, poison and spirit do nothing.
How do you find an Abomination? Look for a slanted, mossy stump standing in open Swamp water and leaking green gas. Only one spawns per zone, and a cleared zone takes about 66 minutes to spawn another.
How many Abominations do you need for Root armor? Each drops five Root; the three pieces take 30 to craft and 66 to upgrade fully, so 14 kills.
Can you parry an Abomination? Yes. A Banded Shield or better parries its attacks, the right-branch swing being the easiest, and a parried Abomination stays stunned long enough for heavy hits.
