Rested, Comfort and Sleeping

How Valheim's Rested buff works, how fire, shelter and furniture build the Comfort level that sets its length, and how beds, spawn points and sleeping through the 30-minute day and night cycle fit together.

Rested is the single most valuable status effect in Valheim. It raises health regeneration by 50 percent, doubles stamina and eitr regeneration, and adds 50 percent to all skill experience (Valheim Wiki). It is earned by resting for twenty seconds beside a fire or by sleeping in a bed, and it lasts seven minutes plus one minute for every point of Comfort the surroundings provide. Building a comfortable hall is therefore not decoration: it is the difference between an eight-minute buff and one that lasts half an hour. The game runs on a day and night cycle (Wikipedia), and a claimed bed both sets the player's spawn point and lets them sleep the dangerous night away.

Quick facts

What Rested does +50% health regeneration, +100% stamina and eitr regeneration, +50% skill experience
Duration Seven minutes, plus one minute for every point of Comfort
How to earn it Twenty uninterrupted seconds of Resting beside a fire, or waking from a bed
Resting needs A heat source, no hostile creature nearby, and a player who is not Wet, Burning, Freezing or Poisoned
Comfort Fire alone is 1, shelter adds 2; only the best piece in each furniture group counts, within ten meters
Highest Comfort recorded 24 in a 1.0 hall, a 31-minute buff; the pre-1.0 ceiling was 17, or 19 with seasonal pieces
Beds 8 Wood at a Workbench; a claimed bed is the respawn point and needs a roof, a fire, dryness and no enemies
Day length 30 real minutes, 21 of daylight and 9 of night

The Rested effect

The in-game tooltip lists four bonuses; the skill-experience bonus is real but not shown (Valheim Wiki). Eitr is the resource spent by staves, so the buff matters as much to a mage as to a warrior; see Magic and Staves and Skills.

Rested bonus Value
Health regeneration +50%
Stamina regeneration +100%
Eitr regeneration +100%
Skill experience gain +50% (not listed in the tooltip)
Duration 7 minutes + 1 minute per Comfort level

Beginner guides for 1.0 put Rested alongside a full food bar and careful stamina use as the three habits that carry a Viking from the Meadows to the Deep North. Hugin the raven says the same thing in the opening minutes of a new world; see Getting Started and Food and Cooking.

Resting: fire, shelter and sitting

Rested is granted after twenty uninterrupted seconds of the weaker Resting effect. Resting requires no hostile creature nearby, the Fire effect from a nearby heat source, and that the player is neither Wet nor suffering from Burning, Freezing or Poison (Valheim Wiki). While Resting is active regeneration is far higher still, +200 percent health and +300 percent stamina and eitr, which is why a campfire in a dungeon entrance is a standard way to recover between fights. If an enemy approaches or the fire goes out, the twenty-second timer restarts.

Outdoors the player must sit down (default X) within range of a fire; the Resting icon then appears in the top right with a Comfort value of 1. Any heat source that gives the Fire effect works: campfire, bonfire, hearth, braziers, and even a lit smelter, kiln or blast furnace (Crafting Stations and Upgrades).

Under a roof the rules relax: a sheltered player rests standing up and Shelter itself is worth two Comfort points, so fire plus shelter gives Comfort 3 and a ten-minute buff before any furniture is placed. Shelter means about 80 percent cover from the sides and a roof overhead; a natural overhang or an abandoned house counts as well as anything the player builds (Building and Structural Integrity).

Wet is the usual obstacle. Rain, swimming and the permanent drizzle of the Swamp all apply it, it cuts health regeneration by a quarter and stamina and eitr regeneration by 15 percent, and it blocks both resting and sleeping. Standing by a fire burns the Wet timer down quickly. The one exception is the heated hot tub, the only place a Wet player can become Rested (Valheim Wiki); see Weather, Cold and Wet.

Comfort

Comfort does not make the buff stronger; it only makes it last longer. The number in brackets beside the Resting icon is the Comfort level, and the Rested duration in minutes is that number plus seven. Comfort 1 by a fire in the open gives eight minutes; a hall built for the purpose gives twenty-four or more (Valheim Wiki).

Furniture counts only within ten meters of the player, measured in all directions to the center of each piece, so upper floors and cellars contribute. Pieces belong to groups, and within a group only the single best piece counts: ten chairs are worth no more than one, and a stool beside a throne adds nothing. Variety across groups is what raises the level. The full list of furniture is on Furniture and Decoration.

Comfort by furniture group

The groups below combine the Valheim Wiki's table with in-game testing of the 1.0 build by the YouTuber EmmaTpotato, who found that several pieces added over the last two years had quietly been given Comfort values.

Group 1 point 2 points 3 points
Shelter ( Any qualifying roof and walls )
Fire (must be lit) Campfire, Bonfire, Hanging and Standing Brazier, Hildir's fire Hearth None
Bed Bed, Ashwood Bed Dragon Bed None
Seating Stool, Bench, sitting log Chair, Darkwood Chair, Carved Chair Raven Throne, Stone Throne, Antler Throne and other thrones
Table Table, Black Marble Table, small Deep North table Round Table, Long Heavy Table, large Deep North table None
Rug or carpet Deer, Hare, Straw and Jute rugs and the smaller Deep North piece Bearskin, Wolf and Lox rugs and the larger Deep North piece None
Banner or curtain Any banner Jute Curtains None
Hot tub (must be heated) ( Hot Tub )
Special lantern ( Lava Lantern, Jack-o'-turnip or Snow Lantern )
Stands Armor Stand, Item Stand ( )
Lights and garlands Fey Lights, Flower Garland ( )
Ashlands decoration Clay pots and similar pieces ( )
Seasonal Maypole, Yule Tree (each its own group) ( )

Seating is the richest group. A stool is worth one, a chair two and any throne three, and the Antler Throne, Carved Bench, Carved Chair and carved tables introduced in 1.0 follow the same pattern as their older equivalents (1.0 patch notes via BisectHosting). Two Deep North rugs, the Moose Hide Carpet and the Sealskin Rug, were added at the same time; one is worth a point and the other two, like the older small and large rugs.

The Hot Tub, which arrived with the Hearth & Home Update in September 2021, is fueled with wood and adds two Comfort while it steams. It costs 20 Wood, 6 Tar, 10 Iron and 8 Stone at a Workbench, and since it is its own group it stacks with the hearth (Valheim Wiki).

The Snow Lantern is the Deep North's contribution: two Comfort, but it can only stand in frost biomes such as the Mountain and the Deep North and destroys itself anywhere warmer.

Maximum comfort

Before 1.0 the wiki's ceiling was Comfort 17 without seasonal pieces, for a 24-minute buff, or 19 with a Maypole and a Yule Tree (Valheim Wiki). Filling a single 1.0 hall with shelter, a hearth, a Dragon Bed, a throne, a darkwood table, a wolf rug, jute curtains, a heated hot tub, a lava lantern, an item stand, clay pots, a Maypole, a Yule Tree and fey lights, EmmaTpotato reached Comfort 24, a 31-minute buff, with a Snow Lantern still to add in a cold biome.

The practical ceiling rises biome by biome. Wood and deer hide give a bed and rug in the Meadows; fine wood from the Black Forest unlocks banners, a chair and a table; iron and the stonecutter from the Swamp bring the hearth, the Raven Throne and the armor stand; the Dragon Bed needs wolf pelts from the Mountain; the darkwood tables need tar from the Plains; the hot tub and lava lantern follow in later biomes.

The Maypole and Yule Tree are craftable only during Iron Gate's midsummer and Christmas events, but once placed they persist all year. A few world seeds also generate a natural Maypole in a Meadows village; it cannot be moved, so some players build around it.

Beds and spawn points

The basic Bed costs 8 Wood at a Workbench and is usually the first piece of furniture in a new world. Looking at it and pressing E claims it; the most recently claimed bed is the player's respawn point after Death and Corpse Runs, and each bed can be claimed by only one player at a time. If the claimed bed is destroyed, the player respawns at the Sacrificial Stones (Valheim Wiki). Players put cheap beds in outposts beside dungeons and boss altars for exactly this reason.

To claim or sleep in a bed it must have a roof and roughly 80 percent cover, there must be a fire nearby, no enemies within range, and the player must be dry (Valheim Wiki). An abandoned house with an intact roof and a quick campfire will do, even in the Deep North; a raid or a wandering creature produces the familiar "There are enemies nearby" refusal.

There are three beds. The Bed and the Ashwood Bed from the Ashlands are single beds worth one Comfort; the Dragon Bed, unlocked with wolf pelts in the Mountain, is a double worth two and remains the best bed in the game even after 1.0.

The day and night cycle

A full day in Valheim lasts 30 real minutes: 21 minutes of daylight and 9 of night (Valheim Wiki). After dark, hostile creatures spawn more often, some appear only at night, such as the Swamp's Wraiths and the Mountain's Fenrings, and a player outdoors without frost resistance takes the Cold effect, which halves health regeneration and cuts stamina regeneration by a quarter (Valheim Wiki). See Weather, Cold and Wet and Raids and Events.

There is no clock on screen. Players read the time from the sun's position, or from the direction of shadows on the minimap, and some build a sundial of floor tiles and signs that reads off the minutes of daylight remaining.

Sleeping

From late afternoon onwards a claimed bed offers the Sleep prompt. Sleeping fast-forwards the world to shortly before dawn, so smelters, kilns, fermenters and other stations keep processing while the player sleeps, though raw food left on a cooking station burns (Valheim Wiki (Fandom)). Going to bed late skips less time, and sleeping has a cooldown so it cannot be used to skip day after day.

Waking from a bed grants Rested immediately, with no twenty-second wait, at the Comfort level of the room the bed stands in. Sleeping is therefore the cheapest way to start every day with the buff, and sleeping through the night at once avoids the Cold effect, the night spawns and the darkness.

The player may dream. The wiki lists 24 standard dreams and 5 boss dreams, each hinting at the next Forsaken to be summoned, with an average chance of about 38 percent per night once all are unlocked (Valheim Wiki (Fandom)); see Lore and Setting.

Keeping the buff

The countdown under the Rested icon starts the moment the player leaves the resting area or drops to a lower Comfort. Moving to a higher-Comfort spot without ever losing the Resting effect extends the timer at once; otherwise the player must rest for another twenty seconds or sleep, and the new duration only replaces the old one if it is longer. When it runs out the game reports that the player no longer feels rested.

Logging out discards the effect; it never survives into a new session (Valheim Wiki). Single-player games can be paused instead, which preserves it.

Everything in a maximum-Comfort room except the hot tub's iron and the lava lantern's flametal can be carried through Portals, so experienced players pack a full furniture set to any new base and never explore without the buff. Several furniture values have changed over the years, with the Mistlands Update stopping rugs from stacking with each other and the Ashlands Update adding the lava lantern, so older guides can overstate what a particular piece is worth.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get the Rested buff in Valheim? Rest for twenty uninterrupted seconds beside a lit fire, sitting down if you are outdoors and standing if you are under a roof, or wake from a bed, which grants it at once. Any heat source works, down to a lit smelter or kiln.

How long does Rested last? Seven minutes plus one minute for every point of Comfort, so a campfire in the open gives eight minutes and a hall built for the purpose gives twenty-four or more.

What is the maximum Comfort level? The Valheim 1.0 Release pushed it higher than the wiki's old ceiling of 17, or 19 with a Maypole and a Yule Tree; a fully furnished 1.0 hall has reached Comfort 24, a 31-minute buff, with a Snow Lantern still to add in a cold biome.

Why can I not sleep in my bed? Sleeping asks for a roof with roughly 80 per cent cover, a fire nearby, no enemies within range and a player who is not Wet, and the prompt only appears from late afternoon. A raid or a wandering creature produces the "There are enemies nearby" refusal.

Does Rested survive logging out? No. The effect is discarded at the end of a session and never carries into a new one, though a single-player game can be paused instead.
