Status Effects
Valheim's status effects are the timed buffs and debuffs shown at the top right of the screen: Rested, Resting, Shelter and Fire; Wet, Cold and Freezing; Burning, Poison, Frost and Smoked; Encumbered, Corpse Run and No Skill Drain; plus set bonuses, meads and 1.0's Royalty.
Status effects in Valheim are the temporary buffs and debuffs, shown as icons with timers at the top right of the screen, that change a Viking's regeneration, speed, resistances or health: from the Rested bonus earned beside a fire to the Wet, Cold, Freezing, Poison and Burning conditions the world inflicts. CaptRobGames' demonstration is typical: a swim leaves him Wet for two minutes, nightfall adds Cold, both slow his stamina, and a fire clears them. Most effects come from the environment and from enemy attacks; others from gear, meads and the Forsaken Powers (Status effects, Valheim Wiki).

Rested, Resting, Shelter and Fire
The positive effects chain together. Standing within range of a campfire, hearth, brazier or working smelter gives Fire; a roof with 80 percent cover gives Shelter. Fire plus either sitting down or Shelter, with no hostile creature near and no Wet, Burning, Freezing or Poison, starts Resting, and twenty unbroken seconds of Resting grant Rested. How furniture lengthens it is on Rested, Comfort and Sleeping.
Wet, Cold and Freezing
Wet comes from rain without a roof or from wading deep, and Lucky Ghost reads out its tooltip in his 1.0 guide: health regeneration −25, stamina and Eitr −15, resistant to fire but weak to frost and lightning. It blocks resting and sleeping, and standing by a fire runs its 120-second timer down fast. Being Wet makes Burning expire six times faster, and Burning dries a Wet Viking about sixty times faster, which is why SnazzyGames dives into water to put out flames (Burning, Valheim Wiki).
Cold arrives with the nine-minute night for anyone outdoors in the temperate biomes and ends at dawn or beside a fire. Freezing is its lethal form, applied in the Mountain and Deep North at any hour, during Moder's fight and her drake raid: health regeneration stops, a point of health drains every second, and only frost resistance from a mead, a cape or Moder's power prevents it. Shelter or a fire downgrades it to Cold; the 1.0 Deep North snowstorms freeze anyone who lacks resistance (Weather, Cold and Wet).
Burning, Poison, Frost and Smoked
Fire and poison attacks apply their damage as effects. Burning lasts five seconds and splits the fire damage into one tick a second, so a 10-point fireball burns for 2 a second, as SnazzyGames shows; fresh fire adds to what remains. Poison lasts longer the bigger the hit, and a new dose only replaces the old one if it is stronger. The ticks are pure, so armor and resistance count only when the effect is applied (Poison, Valheim Wiki; Damage Types).
Frost damage adds a slow that starts at full strength and fades, lasting longer the more of a Viking's health the hit took. Smoked is the silent one: standing in the smoke of an indoor fire costs 2 health a second with no sound cue (Smoked, Valheim Wiki).
Encumbered and other movement effects
Carrying more than the Carry Weight limit makes a Viking Encumbered: walking pace only, no running, jumping, dodging or blocking, 5 stamina a second while moving, and no stamina regeneration once the bar is empty (Encumbered, Valheim Wiki). Tar pits and the Plains' Growths leave a Viking Tarred and The Queen's spit Slimed: half speed and double damage from fire. Bukeperries and rotten meat cause Feeling sick, which empties the stomach on purpose (Food and Cooking).
Corpse Run and No Skill Drain
Death leaves two effects. No Skill Drain appears at the top right after dying and, for ten minutes, spares the skills from a second penalty; unlike every other effect it persists after logging out (No skill drain, Valheim Wiki). Corpse Run follows once the tombstone is emptied and makes the trip home fast and safe (Death and Corpse Runs; Stamina).
Buffs from gear, powers and meads
Gear with a set bonus shows it as a status icon: Sneaky for the Troll set, Improved Archery for Root, Fenris Blessing, Berserk for the Bear set, Vilebone Wrath, Ask's Endurance, and in 1.0 Boon of the Lox (+30 Sneak, +15 Bows) and the Vanguard bonus. Capes and utility items add Feather Fall, Wind Run, Megingjord and Wisplight (Armor and Capes). The 1.0 headline is Royalty from the Crown of Valheim: 5 percent more speed, 20 percent less stamina for attacking, swimming, sneaking and running, and creatures that will not harm its wearer, though SnazzyGames found bosses still fight (Game8). Forsaken powers, meads and the Staff of Protection's Magic Barrier also appear as effects, and allied Dvergr mages can heal a player 400 health over four seconds (Magic and Staves).
Tips for managing status effects
Resistance meads work only if drunk before the hit, since poison and burning are fixed when applied. A successful block stops on-hit effects such as poison from being applied at all (Blocking, Valheim Wiki; Parrying and Blocking). SnazzyGames' most controversial tip is that logging out clears every status effect, including damage over time, though it also throws away Rested.
Frequently asked questions
How do you get rid of Wet in Valheim? Stand by a fire, which runs the 120-second timer down ten times faster, and stay under a roof so the rain cannot renew it.
How do you stop Freezing in Valheim? Get frost resistance from a Frost Resistance Mead, a Wolf, Lox, Feather or Deep North cape, or Moder's power. Shelter or a nearby fire reduces Freezing to Cold.
Can you cure poison in Valheim? No; it runs its course. Drink a Poison Resistance Mead before fighting poisonous creatures, block their attacks, and heal with meads.
Why can't I get the Rested buff? Resting needs a fire, sitting or shelter, no nearby enemies, and no Wet, Burning, Freezing or Poison.

HealthHealth is Valheim's red bar: 25 points at base, raised only by food, restored every ten seconds by each food's healing value and faster when Rested, and worn down by damage that armor, resistances and blocking reduce. It also sizes the stagger bar. -
Mead and PotionsValheim's 21 brewed drinks: the Mead Ketill and Fermenter that make them, the healing, stamina and eitr meads, the frost, poison and fire resistance meads each biome demands, and the eight Bog Witch potions added in 2024. -
Forsaken PowersForsaken Powers are the timed buffs unlocked by hanging a boss trophy at the Sacrificial Stones. One is active at a time, lasts five minutes on a shared twenty-minute cooldown, and since Call to Arms triggering one also builds adrenaline. -
Rested, Comfort and SleepingHow Valheim's Rested buff works, how fire, shelter and furniture build the Comfort level that sets its length, and how beds, spawn points and sleeping through the 30-minute day and night cycle fit together. -
EitrEitr is Valheim's purple magic resource, spent by every staff. A Viking has none until they eat an Eitr food; it refills at 2 to 4 points a second, faster with mage armor, Rested and The Queen's power, and is distinct from the Refined Eitr used to craft magic gear.
