Parrying and Blocking
Blocking in Valheim raises a shield or weapon so its block armor absorbs a hit; a parry, or Perfect Block, is a block timed within a quarter second of impact that multiplies block armor, costs no stamina and staggers the attacker. Formulas, the stagger limit, shields and tips.
Blocking in Valheim is the defensive action of raising a shield or weapon so that its block armor absorbs an incoming hit, and parrying, which Iron Gate's patch notes call a Perfect Block, is a block pressed in the last quarter second before the hit lands: it multiplies that block armor, costs no stamina and staggers the attacker. Every weapon can block, even a torch or a bow, but shields block far better, and all shields except tower shields can parry (Blocking, Valheim Wiki). Lucky Ghost's 1.0 guide demonstrates both; the wider fighting system is on Combat.
Quick facts
| Parry window | Less than 0.25 seconds before the hit lands |
| Block stamina | Up to 10 per hit, in proportion to the damage let through; none for a parry |
| Stagger limit | 40% of maximum health |
| Largest hit you can hold | 40% of maximum health + block armor × parry bonus |
| Parry bonus | Round shields 1.5×, bucklers 2.5×, most weapons 2×, knives 4×, Flesh Rippers 6×, tower shields none |
| Blocking skill | +0.5% block armor per level, +50% at level 100 |
| After a parry | The attacker is staggered and takes double damage; bosses are immune |
How blocking works
A block resolves in four steps. First the item's block armor, raised by the Blocking skill, reduces the raw hit with the same formula armor uses. Second, the block costs up to 10 Stamina in proportion to the share of the hit that got through. Third, that leftover physical and lightning damage fills the stagger bar; if it overflows, the block fails, the Viking is staggered and the whole hit lands. Fourth, whatever survives is reduced again by worn armor. A block also stops poison and other on-hit effects (Blocking, Valheim Wiki). MalinaPlays sums it up as block armor plus 40 percent of maximum health against the size of the hit.
A worked example: a Viking with 100 maximum health, and so a 40-point stagger limit, blocks with 30 block armor. A 50-point hit leaks 50² ÷ (4 × 30), about 21, costs about 4 stamina and holds. A 100-point hit leaks 70, overflows the bar and breaks the block. If those 30 points belong to a buckler and the 100-point hit is parried, it meets 75 block armor, leaks only 33, costs nothing and staggers the attacker (Damage mechanics, Valheim Wiki).
How parrying works
A parry happens when block is pressed less than 0.25 seconds before an attack lands, marked by a red flash and a clang. The item's block armor is multiplied by its parry bonus, and the attacker is staggered at once without its stagger bar filling, opening a window in which it takes double damage; bosses and a few creatures are immune. Nazori's calculation starts from the tooltip's bracketed block armor, which includes the skill: 30 on his buckler, times 2.5, makes 75 (Blocking, Valheim Wiki).
A parry still has a ceiling. The largest hit a Viking can hold is 40 percent of maximum health plus the multiplied block armor, or, once the block armor is the larger of the two, 2 × √(0.4 × maximum health × block armor × parry bonus). By that formula a 350-health Viking parrying with a Carapace buckler at maximum quality (225 before the skill) holds a hit of about 355. Parrying also works against arrows and other projectiles, and a mistimed parry is simply an ordinary block (Combat).
The stagger bar: why blocks fail
The bar that appears beside the character when blocking is the stagger bar, and it is 40 percent of maximum health: Nazori's 85 health gives 34, which he adds to his 75 for a 109-point parry. It drains a fifth of its size each second, so several blocks in quick succession stack up, and a staggered Viking is stunned for about 1.2 seconds (Stagger, Valheim Wiki). Fire, frost, poison and spirit are reduced by block armor but never fill it. Because the limit follows maximum health, eating for Health makes every shield stronger, and Fader's power halves the stagger a Viking takes (Forsaken Powers).
Best shields and weapons for parrying
Nocturne Gaming's comparison shows why the parry bonus matters more than raw block armor: parrying with a sword gives 12 block armor × 2 = 24, parrying with his buckler 28 × 2.5 = 70, while tower shields have no parry bonus at all. Shields replace the block values of the weapon they are held with (Shields, Valheim Wiki).
| Shield | Type | Block armor at maximum quality | Parry bonus | Block armor when parrying |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze buckler | Buckler | 28 | 2.5× | 70 |
| Iron buckler | Buckler | 40 | 2.5× | 100 |
| Carapace buckler | Buckler | 90 | 2.5× | 225 |
| Carapace shield | Round | 108 | 1.5× | 162 |
| Flametal shield | Round | 126 | 1.5× | 189 |
| Flametal tower shield | Tower | 152 | none | cannot parry |
Figures are before the Blocking skill, from the wiki's shield list. The 1.0 Nord Buckler, Nord Shield, Nord Greatshield and Shield of Roots had no published block values on Sep 11, 2026 (Weapons and Shields). The wiki's own pages disagree on atgeirs, 2× or 3×.
When to block, parry or dodge
MalinaPlays treats blocking as the safe default for unfamiliar enemies: if block armor and health clearly outweigh the hit, a held block takes no stagger and allows an instant counter. Its costs are stamina, which runs out if the shield stays up too long, and the shared stagger bar, which several attackers fill faster than one.
Parrying suits single enemies whose wind-ups are learned, with a high-parry item such as a buckler, knife or fist weapon. Dodging is the answer to everything else: a roll ignores the block maths entirely, works against attacks that cannot be blocked and against groups, and since 2025 refunds half its cost when it slips a hit (Damage mechanics, Valheim Wiki).
Training blocking and parrying
The Blocking skill gains half a point of experience per blocked attack and a full point per parry, even when the block fails, and adds 0.5 percent block armor per level (Blocking (skill), Valheim Wiki; Skills). Since Call to Arms, T.W.I.G. offers a safer partner: a buildable dummy that swings back so that parry timing can be learned at home. The Evasion Mantle trinket raises the parry bonus by 50 percent during its surge, and the Staff of Protection's barrier lets a Viking parry without worrying about the stagger bar (Magic and Staves).
History
The present system dates from the Hearth & Home Update of September 2021. Iron Gate's shields spotlight that August previewed much more knockback for tower shields, the buckler as the parrying shield and round shields as the balanced choice, and the same update tied blocking to maximum health through the new stagger bar (MMORPG.com). The Call to Arms Update (patch 0.221.4, Sep 9, 2025) made the Perfect Block free of stamina, cut the tower shield's movement penalty (now 10 percent), made blocks free under Bonemass's power and added T.W.I.G. (Iron Gate, Patch 0.221.4). The Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026 added four shields and no rule changes.
Frequently asked questions
How do you parry in Valheim? Press block, the right mouse button by default, less than a quarter of a second before the attack lands, with any shield but a tower shield, or a weapon. A red flash and a clang confirm it.
Does parrying cost stamina in Valheim? No, not since the Call to Arms update of September 2025; an ordinary block costs up to 10.
What is the best shield for parrying? A buckler, with a 2.5× parry bonus; the Carapace buckler has the highest documented parry value.
Can you parry with a tower shield? No. Tower shields have the most block armor but no parry bonus.
Why did my block fail? Either the damage that got through overflowed the stagger bar, 40 percent of maximum health, or there was not enough stamina.
