Battle and Protection Idols
Where to find all 16 idols in Valheim, the eight tiers from Wooden to Bloodgold, which idol each weapon, staff and armor piece needs at the Forge of Potential, and how many idols a high upgrade takes.
Battle and Protection Idols are rare chest finds in Valheim, eight tiers of each from Wooden in the Meadows to Bloodgold in the Deep North, and each one buys a single upgrade attempt at the Forge of Potential. Battle Idols refine weapons, tools and staves; Protection Idols refine armor, capes and shields. They arrived with the Valheim 1.0 Release of Sep 9, 2026, whose notes tell players to "find mysterious idols scattered throughout the world" and carry them to a hidden forge (Iron Gate). An idol is spent whether the attempt succeeds or fails.

Where to find each idol
Idols do not drop from creatures in any guide checked here; they come from searching containers, and Kysen warns that "you will have to search a lot of chests". His Flametal Protection Idol came from a Jotun chest in the Gates of Mörkhalla. KeenGamer's list of Sep 12, 2026 is the fullest by location, and unless noted both kinds drop in the same places (KeenGamer):
| Tier | Biome | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden | Meadows | Chests in abandoned wooden houses and Stone Ship Settings |
| Bronze | Black Forest | Ruins, stone houses, Burial Chambers and Troll Caves |
| Iron | Swamp | Sunken Crypts chests, Swamp graves and ruined structures |
| Silver | Mountain | Frost Caves chests and abandoned log cabins |
| Black Metal | Plains | Fuling towers, Plains ruins, Hildir-related Plains chests and trash piles |
| Black Marble | Mistlands | Dvergr Treasure Chests in ruined guard towers (Dvergr Outposts), Morgen Holes and Charred Fortresses; the Protection Idol also in breakable pots in Charred Ruins |
| Flametal | Ashlands, Deep North | Deep North huts, lumber camps, villages, shipwrecks and Mörkhalla chests, and some Ashlands locations; the Protection Idol also in some Mistlands and Ashlands chests |
| Bloodgold | Deep North | Ancient and Jotun's Chests in Mörkhalla, Deep North Ship Settings and shipwrecks |
Which idol an item needs
An item generally takes the idol of the material it is made from, and the forge shows the requirement when the item is selected, so check there before carrying a stack up the mountain. There are exceptions: the Early Axes, a Meadows weapon, take Iron idols (Game Rant). Timesaver.gg's guide of Oct 25, 2026, checked on Patch 1.0.20, lists these (Timesaver.gg):
| Idol | Items |
|---|---|
| Wooden Battle | Club, Stone Axe, Flint Spear, Crude Bow |
| Wooden Protection | Leather and rag armor |
| Bronze Battle | Wooden Sword |
| Silver Battle | Frostner |
| Silver Protection | Fenris Coat, Hood and Leggings |
| Black Marble Battle | Mistwalker, Spinesnap, Krom, Arbalest, Splitnir |
| Flametal Battle | Staff of the Wild, Ripper |
| Bloodgold Battle | Nord Bow, Frostfire Bow, Thunderblood Knucklechains, the four Deep North staves |
| Bloodgold Protection | Breastplate of the Protector |
Tools such as the Hammer, Hoe, Cultivator, metal Pickaxes, Scythe and Snow Shovel take Battle idols but gain only durability, so they are the poorest use of one. Items with no quality level cannot be refined, and neither can the clothing sold by Hildir or trinkets (Forge of Potential).
How many idols you need
Guides put the odds at 65 percent success and 35 percent destruction an attempt, unchanged by level or skill, though Iron Gate has not published them (Timesaver.gg). Timesaver works that out as about 1.5 idols on average to take one item from quality 4 to 5 and 35 to reach quality 10, with a median of 26 and 75 or more for about one player in ten, because every break starts the climb again on a replacement. The full table is on Forge of Potential.
Low-tier idols may be worth more than they look: Anshostin argues that a Club refined with Meadows idols can reach the damage of Deep North weapons (Forge of Potential).
Frequently asked questions
Where do you find idols in Valheim? In chests and other containers across the world, matched roughly to biome: Wooden in Meadows houses, Bronze in Black Forest ruins and Burial Chambers, Iron in Sunken Crypts, Silver in Frost Caves, Black Metal in Plains towers, Black Marble in Dvergr chests, Flametal and Bloodgold mostly in the Deep North.
What is the difference between Battle and Protection Idols? Battle Idols refine weapons, tools, bows, crossbows and staves. Protection Idols refine armor, capes and shields.
Where are Bloodgold idols? In Ancient and Jotun's Chests in Mörkhalla and in Deep North Ship Settings and shipwrecks. KeenGamer describes them as the rarest tier.
How do you use an idol in Valheim? Carry it to the Forge of Potential in the Mountain, interact with the table, pick an item and press Attempt Refinement. The forge shows which idol the item needs.
Do you lose the idol if the upgrade fails? Yes, and you lose it on success too. Every attempt spends one idol, and a failure also destroys the item.
How many idols are there in a world? Iron Gate has not said. Anshostin says the number is fixed, which he warns invites hoarding on community servers (Forge of Potential).
