Dvergr Outposts

The black-marble towers, lighthouses, harbors and excavation camps of the neutral Dvergr in Valheim's Mistlands: who guards them, the Ward rules that turn them hostile, the crate holding the Dvergr extractor, the loot, and how to claim one without a fight.

Dvergr outposts are the fortified settlements of the Dvergr, a neutral dwarf people, in the Mistlands biome of Valheim: black-marble guard towers, lighthouses, harbors and excavation camps whose garrisons fight Seekers but turn on any player who damages them. Every Mistlands playthrough needs one, because the Dvergr extractor, the part that makes a Sap Extractor and therefore refined eitr possible, comes only from crates inside inhabited outposts (Dvergr, Valheim Wiki). The Dvergr are the people of the traders Haldor and Hildir; their combat statistics are on Mistlands Creatures.

Types of Dvergr outpost

Most outposts are black marble trimmed with Dvergr copper and wood, ringed by sharpened stakes, hung with blue jute drapes and lit by blue lamps that clear the mist for good (Dvergr Guard Tower, Dvergr Lighthouse, Dvergr Excavation Site, Dvergr Harbour, Valheim Wiki).

Structure What it looks like Component crate
Guard Tower Marble tower of one or two storeys, some with roof access or a basement Always one
Lighthouse Coastal two-storey tower behind a hexagonal gate, a big blue light upstairs Always one, upstairs
Excavation Site Stake-walled camp around a pit where Dvergr mine a giant's skull or ribs One, except when ruined
Harbour Wooden dock with a crane, sometimes leading to a small marble house Only in the house
Viaduct Ruined marble bridge on one to three pillars, no Dvergr None

Ruined towers, one excavation layout and every viaduct are held by Seekers instead. One kind of Infested Mines entrance resembles a one-storey tower but has no drapes and a marble spiral stair leading down.

The Dvergr Ward: what makes them hostile

Each inhabited outpost has a Dvergr Ward that blocks building and digging and counts the hits on anything under it. EmmaTpotato's tests found five hits on warded pieces are tolerated and the sixth angers the garrison; portalling away and back resets the count. Pickaxe hits on the Ward itself set them off after three, and destroying any warded piece angers them at once. Damage from a Gjall, a Seeker or a cart is never blamed on the player (Ward, Valheim Wiki).

Striking a Dvergr needs no count: every Dvergr within about 20 meters of it turns hostile, permanently. Hugin warns on the first visit that the Dvergr tolerate strangers but are quick to anger (Hugin, Valheim Wiki).

How to get the Dvergr extractor

The component crate has only 10 durability and always drops one Dvergr extractor, which weighs 5 and cannot pass through a wooden portal (Portals). With 10 Yggdrasil Wood and 5 black metal it builds a Sap Extractor, which draws one Sap a minute from an ancient root, the fuel of the Eitr Refinery (Dvergr extractor, Sap extractor, Valheim Wiki; Eitr).

The direct way is to fight. NickRawcliffe stays at range, shooting frost arrows and dropping bombs from a vantage point, because the mages' fireballs and frost bolts and the rogues' 110-pierce bolts hit hard and a support mage heals its allies (Bows, Crossbows and Arrows).

The Dvergr fight every hostile creature of the biome, so monsters can do the work. NubbQueen lures starred Seekers, Seeker Soldiers or a Gjall into the camp, since ordinary Seekers die too fast; NickRawcliffe notes that an outpost beside an Infested Mine is ideal.

NubbQueen also reports that pufferfish thrown at the Dvergr poison them without the garrison blaming the thrower (Fishing). A bomb that strikes a Dvergr directly, EmmaTpotato found, does count.

The peaceful route is the cart trick. The player builds a workbench just outside the warded area, makes a cart, pulls it inside and rams the Ward until it breaks, after softening it with up to five ordinary hits. A second cart built beside the crate then breaks that too (Dvergr component crate, Valheim Wiki; Carts, Mounts and Vehicles). The wiki adds that discharges from dropped refined eitr can destroy a Dvergr Ward.

Looting and claiming an outpost

With the Ward gone, everything can be dismantled or rebuilt freely as long as no Dvergr is struck. Lanterns can be picked up even while the Ward stands; they give light without wearing out. Crates give fine wood and soft tissue, grilles and doors copper, cranes chains, drapes blue jute, smashed lanterns copper or a surtling core, and the walls Black Marble with a Stonecutter nearby (Dvergr lantern, Valheim Wiki). Tables sometimes hold a Dvergr tankard. Since mages never respawn and the blue lamps keep the mist away, a claimed outpost makes a ready-made base, though The Bee Side warns that surviving Dvergr draw monsters to it.

Black cores and the Dvergr mines

Outposts never hold black cores; those lie in the treasure rooms of the Infested Mines, the Dvergr's abandoned workings (Black core, Valheim Wiki). In their idle chatter rogues curse the Seekers for smashing their cores, and mages talk of shipping their haul home to Myrkheim and wonder what became of Haldor (Dvergr rogue, Dvergr mage, Valheim Wiki; Runestones and Vegvisirs).

History

The outposts arrived with the Mistlands Update on Dec 6, 2022 (Patch 0.212.7, Steam). Patch 0.213.4 in February 2023 added a buildable Hexagonal Gate that players had requested since meeting the Dvergr, and fixed tankards falling through tower floors (Development Blog: Hold On To Your Hats!, Steam). The Ashlands update of 2024 added a red-bearded clan in Dvergr Charred Tower Ruins, with 1,000-health rogues and crates of Ashwood and Flametal ore (Dvergr Charred Tower Ruins, Valheim Wiki). The Deep North Update (1.0 Patch Notes) left the outposts alone.

Treasure chests in ruined guard towers can also hold Black Marble idols (KeenGamer; Battle and Protection Idols), and the Dvergr Extractor in their crates is the start of all crafting for Magic and Staves.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get the Dvergr extractor without angering the Dvergr? Ram the Ward with a cart built outside the warded area, then build a second cart beside the component crate and ram that. Cart damage is not blamed on the player.

Do Dvergr respawn at their outposts? No. The mages and the Dvergr placed with the building are one-time spawns; only rogues wander the Mistlands by day, at most two at a time.

Can you build inside a Dvergr outpost? Not while its Ward stands. Once the Ward is destroyed the building can be repaired, extended and used as a base.

Where are the black cores? In the Infested Mines, mostly behind hidden doors marked with blue runes, not in the outposts.

What do Dvergr drop? 2–14 coins, with a 50% chance of black marble, 25% of soft tissue and 5% of a Dvergr trophy.
