Mage Build Guide
How to build a mage in Valheim 1.0: when magic opens, which staves to make in the Mistlands, Ashlands and Deep North, the food and armor to wear, and how to fight, with each opinion credited to the player who gave it.
A mage build in Valheim starts in the Mistlands, where the first staves become craftable, and rests on three things: a Staff of Protection bubble to stay alive, two Eitr foods with one health or stamina food, and the mage robes of the current biome. Lucky Ghost's guide to 1.0 goes as far as calling mage builds the most powerful the game has to offer, while saying melee and bow builds are viable too, and points out that a character can switch at any time, since everyone plays melee or bow until the Mistlands anyway. How each staff works, with its recipe and cost, is on Magic and Staves; this page is about choosing.
Quick facts
| Starts | The Mistlands, once a Galdr Table is built |
| Keep up always | Staff of Protection (Lucky Ghost, SnazzyGames) |
| Damage to start | Staff of Frost close, Staff of Embers at range |
| Food | Two Eitr foods and one other; three Eitr foods leave too little health |
| Armor | Eitr-weave, then Embla, then Caller: +100%, +130% and +160% Eitr regeneration |
| Regeneration boost | The Queen's Forsaken Power, +100% (Forsaken Powers) |
| Skills | Elemental Magic and Blood Magic, leveled separately (Skills) |
| Upgrade past the limit | Battle Idols at the Forge of Potential (Battle and Protection Idols) |
Mistlands: the first kit
These first staves last. In his video on surviving the Ashlands, SnazzyGames calls spellcasting the easiest way through, using the Mistlands staves. His approach is two Eitr foods and one stamina food, a Staff of Protection bubble always up, the Staff of Embers for distant creatures and the slowing Staff of Frost to outmaneuver anything close.
Lucky Ghost picks the same two first. The Staff of Frost is his single-target weapon for the Mistlands, the early Ashlands and the fight with The Queen. The Staff of Protection is the one he says a mage must have, because a character in robes dies "ridiculously fast" when something connects.
| Staff | Why make it | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| Staff of Protection | The bubble that keeps a robed mage alive | Lucky Ghost, SnazzyGames |
| Staff of Frost | Cheap, steady single-target damage that slows | Lucky Ghost, SnazzyGames |
| Staff of Embers | Burst at range; 35 Eitr a cast, 24 at skill 100 | SnazzyGames |
| Dead Raiser | Skeletons to hold attention while you kite | Timesaver.gg |
Timesaver.gg's loop for this stage is to raise minions first, back away casting Frost for steady damage and Embers for burst, drop a bubble if cornered, and spend stamina only on dodging, since spells cost none. Its guide was checked on Patch 1.0.16 (Timesaver.gg).
Ashlands: two to make, one to skip
Sebatron's advice from before 1.0 is to skip the Staff of Fracturing, whose small area and low damage he calls the worst of the four, and to make the Staff of the Wild, whose rooted vines hold enemies in place and hit hard. His method is to run circles and lead enemies through the roots. He rates it useful in every biome and against any boss.
His favorite is the Dundr, in effect a short-range shotgun that costs little Eitr. The Trollstav's burning Troll fights for the caster but turns on the caster when no enemy is near, a warning Lucky Ghost repeats (Magic and Staves).
Sebatron's full loadout is a melee weapon in reserve for when Eitr or food runs out, the Dundr, the Staff of the Wild to open a fight and anchor enemies, and the Staff of Frost, which he finds still strong in the Ashlands. Jade PG agrees on that last point, calling the ice staff still "incredibly" powerful there (Jade PG).
Deep North: the 1.0 staves
Published opinion on the four staves of 1.0 is thinner, and this page found no measured ranking. SnazzyGames's first-look guide calls Lightning Strike his favorite and the one that "feels like the obvious most powerful of the four", expects Echo Spike to shine in tight places like the Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla, and thinks Northern Vengeance a worse version of the Staff of Protection, since it reflects damage instead of absorbing it, perhaps viable beside Spirit Caller.
| Staff | Cost | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning Strike | 40 Eitr | Single heavy hits: 300 lightning in a 3 m radius |
| Echo Spike | 25 Eitr | Groups in corridors; catching the return gives back 10 Eitr |
| Spirit Caller | 100 Eitr, 40% health | Summons to take attention |
| Northern Vengeance | 100 Eitr, 40% health | Returning frost damage; it absorbs nothing, so keep Protection |
Costs and effects are from Magic and Staves, and the two Blood Magic costs match BisectHosting's table. Their Moulds come mainly from the Winding Tunnels, so a mage has to go underground before the biome's staves exist, and Nornathread for every one of them drops from the Hexen.
Food
Three different foods at a time, and no Eitr bar without at least one Eitr food. The three strongest give 315 Eitr (Fish Soup, Meatballs and Poteitr, Oven Pancake, at 105 each), but Eitr explains why few mages run that: it leaves very little health. These mixes follow the two-plus-one rule, with figures from Food and Cooking:
| Biome | Eitr foods | Third food | Health, stamina, Eitr from food |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mistlands | Yggdrasil Porridge, Seeker Aspic | Misthare Supreme | Sebatron reports roughly 164 health and Eitr with it |
| Ashlands | Marinated Greens, Sparkling Shroomshake | Piquant Pie | Sebatron's choice; 105 health and 35 stamina from the pie |
| Deep North | Fish Soup, Meatballs and Poteitr | Seal Meat Soup | 182, 73, 210 |
| Deep North, more stamina | Oatmeal, Fish Soup | Meat In Bread | 186, 170, 190 |
The two Deep North rows are this page's arithmetic from the published food table, not a tested recommendation. Oatmeal is the unusual dish here, carrying 85 Eitr and 115 stamina at once. Since Patch 1.0.21 of Oct 28, 2026, the raw forms of Baked Poteitr and Oven Pancake are made at the Food Preparation Table instead of the Cauldron (Iron Gate). Carry a Minor Eitr Mead for emergencies and a Lingering Eitr Mead for long fights (Mead and Potions).
Armor, trinkets and powers
Wear the mage set of the current biome: Eitr-weave, then Embla, then the Caller set, whose Moulds drop only from Hexen (Armor and Capes). Each trades armor for Eitr regeneration, which is why the bubble matters. Patch 1.0.21 removed Moose Trophies from the cost of upgrading the Caller headdress, so a mage no longer spends them on that piece (Iron Gate).
Three trinkets suit casters: the Pulsating Earrings at the start, then the Jörmundling, which Sebatron runs for its 100 Eitr at 70 adrenaline and its boost to both magic skills, and 1.0's Witch Crown. The Queen's Forsaken Power adds 100 percent Eitr regeneration, which Timesaver.gg calls the biggest upgrade a mage can get (Forsaken Powers; Timesaver.gg).
Upgrading
Staves are upgraded at the Galdr Table, and the four Deep North staves stop at quality 3 there (Crafting Stations and Upgrades). Past that, each needs a Battle Idol at the Forge of Potential, with about a one-in-three chance per attempt of destroying the staff. Refine a spare, not the only copy. Staff of the Wild gains 40 projectile damage a level, but its vines scale with Elemental Magic rather than staff level, according to a community datamine Timesaver.gg reports, so a mage may gain more from leveling the skill (Timesaver.gg). The skills themselves also cut casting costs by about a third at level 100 (Magic and Staves).
Frequently asked questions
What is the best mage build in Valheim? No single build is settled, but guides agree on the frame: Staff of Protection always up, Staff of Frost for steady damage, two Eitr foods with one health or stamina food, and the current biome's robes. In the Ashlands, Sebatron adds the Staff of the Wild and the Dundr.
What is the best staff in Valheim? There is no measured ranking. Lucky Ghost calls the Staff of Protection essential, Sebatron's favorite is the Dundr, and SnazzyGames's favorite of the 1.0 staves is Lightning Strike.
When can you start using magic in Valheim? In the Mistlands, after you have the Sap, Soft Tissue and Black Metal for a Galdr Table. Steps are on Magic and Staves.
Is mage good in Valheim? Lucky Ghost calls mage builds the most powerful in the game at 1.0, and SnazzyGames calls spellcasting the easiest way to survive the Ashlands. The price is robes that offer little armor.
What food should a mage eat in Valheim? Two Eitr foods and one health or stamina food. Three Eitr foods give the largest bar, 315 in the Deep North, but leave very little health.
Which staff should you skip? Sebatron advises against the Staff of Fracturing, and SnazzyGames thinks Northern Vengeance is worse than the Staff of Protection. Both are opinions, not measurements.
