Reception and Sales

How critics and players received Valheim from its 2021 early-access debut to the 1.0 release of September 2026 and the month after: review scores, awards and nominations, sales milestones and Steam player-count records.

Valheim is one of the best-received survival games of its generation. It entered Steam early access on Feb 2, 2021 and became an immediate phenomenon, selling five million copies in its first month and reaching more than 500,000 concurrent Steam players; it went on to win Best Debut at the Game Developers Choice Awards and PC Gamer's Game of the Year. When the finished Valheim 1.0 Release arrived on Sep 9, 2026, it scored 89 on Metacritic and a rare 10/10 from IGN, with more than 17 million copies sold. This page covers scores, awards, sales and player numbers; launch-day logistics are on the 1.0 page.

Early access reception (2021)

Critics treated the early-access build as a finished game in all but name. IGN's Leana Hafer gave it 9/10 at launch and, reviewing 1.0 five and a half years later, recalled that it "was already a nine" and had "nowhere to go but up". Wikipedia's summary of the period records IGN Nordic praising the art and music for generating "endless exciting stories", and The Washington Post noting how the game's refusal to over-explain its world fed community theorizing (Wikipedia).

PC Gamer published an unscored early-access review by Christopher Livingston on Feb 26, 2021 that called the game "the rare exception" among unfinished releases, one that already felt refined after 70 hours of play (PC Gamer). The things critics singled out (the Building and Structural Integrity system, boss-gated progression, Sailing and Ships and the Food and Cooking loop) were all in place at the early-access launch, which is why the reviews read like verdicts rather than previews.

Player reviews were even warmer than the press. In Embracer's 2021 documentary about Iron Gate Studio, one of the team says the Steam reviews impressed him more than the sales figures: the game was still "sitting at 96 percent" positive months after release. Metacritic did not assign a metascore during early access, so the 89 that appears on the game's page today reflects the 1.0 reviews of September 2026 (Metacritic).

Early access sales

Nobody at Iron Gate expected the numbers. In the studio's 1.0 retrospective one of its leads recalls thinking the game "was going to be 20,000 sales", and staff describe being "in disbelief" as the total kept climbing. Publisher Coffee Stain Publishing had projected first-week sales that were surpassed within two hours of launch.

The early milestones came days apart. Valheim sold one million copies in its first week, passed three million in under three weeks and four million on Feb 24, 2021, five days after the three-million mark (Shacknews). Iron Gate announced five million copies on Mar 3, 2021, one month after release; Engadget reported 5.7 million by Mar 9, when Törnqvist called it a "once-in-a-lifetime hit" (Engadget).

Sales slowed after the spring of 2021 but never stopped. Embracer Group reported 6.8 million copies by May 20, 2021, ten million by April 2022 and twelve million at its annual general meeting in September 2023 (Game Developer, 2022; Game Developer, 2023). Steam's own "Best of 2021" round-up placed Valheim in the Platinum tier of top sellers by gross revenue and in the top tier of most-played games (PCGamesN). Iron Gate's Hearth & Home fireside chat, recorded in September 2021, discusses how far the game's reception exceeded the studio's expectations.

Steam player-count records

Valheim's concurrent-player peak is the statistic most often quoted about it. On Feb 21, 2021, three weeks after launch, SteamDB recorded 502,387 players online at once, which was at the time the fifth-highest peak in Steam's history, behind only Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, PUBG and Cyberpunk 2077 (Collider). Earlier records had fallen almost daily: 391,325, then 481,836 on the weekend of Feb 20 (Game Rant). Asked in Embracer's documentary when they realized the game was a hit, the studio's answer was "a few hours after release", when new players began pouring into its Discord server.

After the launch spike, the audience settled into a pattern typical of update-driven games: a baseline in the tens of thousands with spikes at each biome release. Speaking to GamesBeat before 1.0, Iron Gate described roughly 20,000 concurrent players on any given day as "healthy" for a game of its age (GamesBeat); SteamDB showed about 19,000 on the day before the 1.0 launch (Beebom).

Awards

Iron Gate Studio's debut collected nominations across the 2021 awards season and won two of the industry's own prizes the following spring (Wikipedia; NME on the Steam Awards; GamesRadar on the Golden Joysticks; University of Skövde).

The finished game opened a second awards season. When the 2026 Golden Joystick nominees were announced on Sep 25, 2026, Valheim was one of the games with three nominations, for PC Game of the Year, Best Indie Game and Best Multiplayer Game. Public voting runs until Oct 23, and the winners are to be announced on Nov 11 (GamesRadar; Iron Gate).

The game's home town honored it too. On Oct 3, 2024 Skövde inaugurated Sweden's first "Walk of Game" on Rådhusgatan, laying bronze plaques for five locally developed hits: Goat Simulator, Raft, Satisfactory, Valheim and V Rising. Inclusion requires at least three million copies sold and at least half of development done in Skövde (Science Park Skövde).

Reception of 1.0 (2026)

Reviews of the finished game were published from Sep 8, 2026, the day before release. In the launch days Metacritic listed a score of 89 from 14 PC critic reviews and a 9.4 user score, and OpenCritic a top-critic average of 88 with 88% of 23 critics recommending the game; Inven Global noted that the metascore debuted at 91 from the first seven reviews before settling as more came in. A month later, on Oct 10, 2026, Metacritic still showed 89, now from 24 PC reviews, beside a user score down to 7.3 from 169 ratings, and OpenCritic a top-critic average of 91, with 95% of its 21 critics recommending the game, its "Mighty" tier (Metacritic; OpenCritic). IGN's reviewer argued that the game had felt "fairly complete" half a decade earlier, so 1.0 played like "an instant classic" that had since received three large expansions.

IGN's 10/10 was the headline. Explaining the score, reviews director Tom Marks and Hafer stressed that a 10 on IGN's scale means "masterpiece", not perfect, and Hafer called Valheim a "generational example of its genre", the survival-crafting game she would put second only to Minecraft in a history of the form. PC Gamer's 90 came with the verdict that one of the best survival games around "is finally complete" (PC Gamer); TheGamer's five-star review praised the atmosphere and said a meaningful ending made 300 hours of play feel purposeful (TheGamer).

The criticisms were consistent across outlets. PCGamesN's 8/10 called the Deep North "everything that a Viking adventure should be" but found the road there grindy, singled out the Mistlands as padded and tedious, and complained that the game explains too little (PCGamesN). TheGamer likewise found resource gathering "excessively grindy" for solo players, and Screen Rant questioned whether the final biome's content would satisfy veterans long-term. Even IGN, which had made the same grind complaint in 2021, noted that the World Modifiers added since then let players tune drop rates to taste.

Community guides published in the run-up to launch reached the same conclusion from the player's side: creators such as Spopes told viewers the game remained one of the finest survival experiences available and that the complete 1.0 package was worth buying even at the higher price. Reviewers repeatedly credited the Call to Arms Update of 2025 for making Combat feel different from the early-access launch, and the Ashlands and Deep North for raising the ambition of the end-game, capped by the Kall Fimbulbringer fight and a proper ending.

Steam users agree, if a little less warmly than before. On Sep 11, 2026 the store page showed the game as "Very Positive", with 94% of about 259,800 English-language reviews positive and 88% of about 4,800 recent reviews positive, and Steam's own API counted 461,622 reviews from Steam purchases across all languages. On Oct 10 the overall figure was unchanged at 94%, now of 265,441 English-language reviews and of 472,134 in all languages, while the 13,802 reviews written in the previous 30 days, nearly all of the time since launch, were 80% positive, still "Very Positive" (Steam). That window also brought a price increase from $19.99 to $29.99 for new buyers.

Sales and players at 1.0

By the time the release date was announced in June 2026, Valheim had passed 17 million copies sold across PC and Xbox, before the new PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions covered on Platforms and System Requirements (Tech Times; GamesBeat). Iron Gate's staff described the launch as "both exciting and scary", because after five years they still did not know what people would think of the ending.

On Steam the 1.0 launch produced the biggest player spike since 2021. Beebom, citing SteamDB, reported 115,362 concurrent players within hours of release on Sep 9, 2026, up from about 19,000 the day before (Beebom); other trackers logged 125,000 to 160,000 later in the day, and the exact peak depends on which outlet is cited. The highest figure for the launch window is SteamCharts': 190,713 concurrent players in the 24 hours to Sep 11 (SteamCharts). Whatever the figure, it stayed well short of the 502,387 record of February 2021, a launch that Iron Gate itself attributes partly to the pandemic, when "people really needed a way to connect with their friends" (GamesBeat). Console players on Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 are not counted in Steam figures, and Cross-Play means many of them share worlds with the Steam population.

The real peak came on the first weekend. SteamDB recorded 308,477 concurrent Steam players then, as Addicting Games reported on Sep 15, 2026, and SteamCharts lists 307,757 as the September peak (Addicting Games; SteamCharts). By SteamCharts' monthly peaks that is the highest since March 2021 (405,826) and the third-highest month in the game's history, after February and March 2021. The crowd stayed: September 2026 averaged 110,174 concurrent players on SteamCharts, more than any month since March 2021, and on Oct 10, a month after launch, the 24-hour peak was still 151,947 and the average over the previous 30 days 134,521, against 15,759 in August.

Legacy

Valheim's influence on the survival genre is now a matter of record rather than prediction. IGN observed that its scoring policy expects a 10 to influence future games, and that in Valheim's case "we know that happened": boss-gated biomes, stamina-based combat and cozy base building have been emulated by a wave of survival titles since 2021. The game also cemented Skövde's reputation as a games town and gave Coffee Stain Publishing its biggest hit, a story told in more detail under Development History.

Frequently asked questions

What is Valheim's Metacritic score? 89, from 24 PC critic reviews as of Oct 10, 2026, alongside a user score of 7.3. OpenCritic gives a top-critic average of 91 with 95% of 21 critics recommending the game. Metacritic assigned no metascore during early access, so the figure reflects the 1.0 reviews of September 2026.

How many copies has Valheim sold? More than 17 million across PC and Xbox by June 2026, before the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions. It sold one million in its first week, five million within a month, ten million by April 2022 and twelve million by September 2023.

What is Valheim's peak player count? 502,387 concurrent Steam players on Feb 21, 2021, three weeks after launch. The Valheim 1.0 Release of September 2026 produced the biggest spike since March 2021: 308,477 on the first weekend after launch by SteamDB's count, still well short of the record.

What awards has Valheim won? PC Gamer's Game of the Year for 2021, and Best Debut and the Audience Award at the 2022 Game Developers Choice Awards. It was also nominated at the Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards and the Steam Awards, and has a bronze plaque on Skövde's Walk of Game. In 2026 the finished game is nominated for three Golden Joystick Awards, PC Game of the Year, Best Indie Game and Best Multiplayer Game, to be decided on Nov 11.

What do reviewers criticize about Valheim? The grind, above all. PCGamesN's 8/10 found the road to the Deep North grindy and the Mistlands padded, TheGamer called resource gathering excessively grindy for solo players, and several outlets said the game explains too little. IGN noted that World Modifiers now let players tune drop rates to taste.
